Granted the veteran from Leeds has a head start on her, having released his first album seven years before she was born, but the charming Miss Runga has a unique sound that deserves to be heard both more often and more widely. If you haven’t heard of her, she exploded onto the music scene in 1997 with Drive, having previously taken minor honours. Drive went platinum seven times in her native New Zealand, and therein lies the problem. Although it has long had a real music scene, including 1970s glam rockers like Space Waltz, and a band called Stellar* (she might just have heard of) as she has acknowledged herself in the past, it is too isolated, even in the cyber age. She has been around a bit though, including to both the US (where she spent some time) and France. Sway, which is far from her best song, has been covered left, right and centre. Since the phenomenal success of Drive though she has released only three albums: Beautiful Collision, Birds and Belle. There is also a compilation, but Belle dates to 2011. So what is she doing now? Well, next month and July she will be performing four dates in New Zealand with another singer-songwriter, Hollie Fulbrook. 80sX Let’s face it, the 1980’s were responsible for some truly horrific crimes against fashion: shoulder-pads, leg-warmers, the unforgivable mullet ! What’s evident though, now more than ever, is that the 80’s provided us with some of the best music ever made. It doesn’t seem to matter if you were alive in the 80’s or not, those songs still resonate with people and trigger a joyous reaction for anyone that hears them. Auckland band 80sX take the greatest new wave, new romantic and synth pop hits and recreate the magic and sounds of the 80’s with brilliant musicianship and high energy vocals. Drummer and programmer Andrew Maclaren is the founding member of multi platinum selling band stellar* co-writing mega hits 'Violent', 'All It Takes' and 'Taken' amongst others. Can you breathe life into these well-worn facts? Can you make the jurors understand? Can you move them to feel the loss your clients have endured? Can you provide the jurors with what it takes to right this wrong? It’s all up to you. The responsibility is overwhelming. All the time, all the work, all the energy, the very future of the family you’ve grown to love depends on the words you choose and how you present them. Essential criteria for maximising the play list potential of New Zealand music on commercial radio: A Programme Directors' perspective A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at Massey University Palmerston North, New Zealand Karen Neill 2000 'Station and programme directors act as gatekeepers, being responsible for ensuring a prescribed and identifiable sound or format, based on what the management of the station believes will generate the largest audience - and ratings - and consequent advertising revenue. The ... prograrnme director ... will regularly sift through new releases, selecting three or four to add to the playlist. The criteria underpinning this process will normally be a combination of the reputation of the artist; a record's previous performance, if already released overseas; whether the song fits the station's format; and, at times, the gut intuition of those making the decision. In the case of the first of these factors, reputation and previous track record, publicity material from the label/artist/distributor plays an important role, jogging memories or sparking interest in a previously unknown artist' (Shuker, 1998, p. 242). May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by ﬂoating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving oﬀ error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.
