Descendants of John Clark Descendants of John Clark February 24, 2012 Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 CLARK was born Abt. 1802 in Virginia, and died 05 Dec 1875 in Guthrie, Iowa. He married (1) SUSANNAH PENTERBAUGH. She was born Abt. 1806 in Tennessee, and died Abt. 1868 in Guthrie, Iowa. He married (2) ELIZABETH ? 01 Apr 1869 in Guthrie, Iowa1. She was born Abt. 1836 in Ohio. Notes for JOHN CLARK: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~iabiog/guthrie/g1884/g1884-dodge.htm History of Guthrie and Adair Counties, Iowa Springfield, Ill: Continental Hist. Co., 1884. John Clark The first settlement in this locality [Dodge Township] was made by John Clark on the 1st of April, 1854. This gentleman was a native of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, but in early life had moved to Darke and Champaign counties, Ohio, and later to St. Joseph county, Indiana, from whence, in July, 1853, he emigrated to Guthrie county. He at first located in what is now Victory township, but upon the date mentioned above, came into Dodge and located upon section 32. He was a staunch republican of the old free soil, or abolition school, and was unyielding in his devotion to the principles of right and justice. When he first settled here, he went to work and after putting up a log-cabin, prepared a small piece of land that he might raise some corn. He chopped holes in the broken sod with his woodman's ax, and committing his seed to the kindly soil, recived when harvest time had rolled around, some forty bushels to the acre of good corn from this primitive mode of agriculture. In 1856 he planted and raised some sorghum, which he believed to have been the first in the United States, he having received some seed from a friend who had received them from the patent-office. Mr. Clark continued a resident of Dodge township until December 5, 1875, when he was called on by the "king of terrors," to cross the "dark river" into the "realms of light," leaving a large circle of friends to mourn his death. ================= 1850 Census IN St Joseph Union Pg 72B Clark,John,48,farmer,VA Susannah,44,(can't read state born) David,21,farmer,OH Moses, 18,OH Jacob,14,IN Abraham,11,IN John,9,IN Isaac,6,IN Nancy Ann,4,IN ************** Iowa State Census Collection, 1836-1925 > 1856 > Guthrie > Dodge Line 1 Clark, John 54 MW M S VA Res/State-3yrs Farmer Native Voter Susan 49 FW M PA Jacob 20 MW S IN Abraham 17 MW S IN John 16 MW S IN Isaac 12 MW S IN Nancy J. 9 FW IN Source Information: Ancestry.com. • Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Ecology: Review and Discussion Regarding Tisbury Great Pond
Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) Ecology: Review and Discussion Regarding Tisbury Great Pond March 2004 (Slight modifications 3 May 2004) Prepared by: William M. Wilcox, Water Resource Planner Martha’s Vineyard Commission Funded by: The Riparian Owners of Tisbury Great Pond Blue Crab Ecology Report/Wilcox 2 6/5/2007 Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) Introduction: From anecdotal evidence, the population of blue crabs in the Great Ponds is highly variable over time. This is true for most locations where this crab is found. Unfortunately, there are no hard local statistics available on the population or harvest. This crab is found primarily from Cape Cod southward although in mild years it will be found off the Maine Coast and even in Nova Scotia. A large amount of research on the crab has been done for the Chesapeake Bay area and in the coastal embayments further south along the western Atlantic Ocean and in the Gulf of Mexico. The Chesapeake Bay probably serves as a good basic model for identifying the factors that affect the crab population from year to year because of its distinctly estuarine nature, similar water temperature and proximity to the Vineyard. On the Vineyard, the crab is somewhat more of a south shore pond denizen although it is found along the north shore ponds particularly Trapp’s Pond at the inner reaches of Sengekontacket Pond on the Edgartown end. The tidal connection between Trapp’s and Sengekontacket under Beach Road has long been called Crab Creek due to the abundance of blue crabs found there. This distribution probably relates to the crabs preference for estuarine water characteristics that are common to the Great Ponds either due to their large stream inputs (Tisbury Great) or their predominance of groundwater input while they are closed to the ocean.
