The Citroën Junior Team Gets Back to Asphalt 45 th RallyRACC Catalunya Costa Daurada (1–4 October 2009) – Preview The Citroën Junior Team gets back to asphalt The three Citroën Junior Team C4 WRCs of Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia, Conrad Rautenbach / Daniel Barritt and Evgeny Novikov / Stéphane Prévot are back on asphalt for the Catalunya Rally, round 11 of the 2009 FIA World Rally Championship, which takes place from October 1-4. On this surface, the three crews will concentrate on gaining valuable experience. A full eight months after the WRC got underway on the sodden asphalt of Ireland, the Citroën Junior Team returns to sealed surfaces in Spain. In weather that will hopefully be somewhat more clement, the crews will have to face a new set of conditions. While Citroën boasts an impressive record of four consecutive Catalunya victories, the Junior Team will be out primarily to gain experience. Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia and Conrad Rautenbach / Daniel Barritt will be the crews nominated to score manufacturer points. Evgeny Novikov, who is now co-driven by Belgium’s Stephane Prevot, is at the wheel of a third Citroën C4 WRC. Having first got to know the event with a C2 Super 1600, Sébastien Ogier will re-acquaint himself with the Catalan stages in a C4 WRC. The Equipe de France FFSA-backed driver put in an excellent performance on the rainy asphalt of Ireland, which bodes well for the future. “We learnt a huge amount in Ireland, which was only our second rally at the wheel of a WRC car,” he said. “Since then, we’ve managed to gain more experience on all sorts of different surfaces. In order to prepare for this event, we’ve just completed a useful test session on asphalt. I’ve been listening carefully to all the advice that the team has given me. Myself and my co-driver Julien really hope to be competitive. The Catalunya Rally is a very important event, but we will approach it with humility. French drivers are often well-known for being strong on asphalt. Nonetheless, I feel more comfortable on gravel these days!” Conrad Rautenbach will be starting his sixth Catalunya Rally and the second one at the wheel of the Citroën C4 WRC. The Zimbabwean cannot wait to get going on these specialised stages. “After having spent almost the entire season on gravel, we now get back to asphalt. Luckily, we had a good test session that ensured we’ve got back up to speed on this surface. I hope we can put in a good performance and I hope that like last year we can fight to get into the points.” Evgeny Novikov was absent in Australia but returns to the World Rally Championship in Spain with a new co-driver: Stéphane Prévot. The Belgian already formed part of the Citroën Junior Team at the start of the season alongside Chris Atkinson on the Rally Ireland. He will bring plenty of experience to the up-and- coming young Russian driver: “We already did an asphalt rally together to get up to speed,” said Novikov. “Everything went very well, and this first asphalt event on the WRC is bound to be a very educational experience. I’m not really sure what we can realistically expect in terms of performance but my objective will be to reach the finish, with the maximum number of kilometres under my belt. Three questions to...Benoit Nogier, Citroën Junior Team manager The FIA World Rally Championship now returns to asphalt. Does the Citroën Junior Team prepare differently for an event on this surface? “Given that the Rally Ireland, held in winter, has a very specific character, the Catalunya Rally is our first real asphalt event of the season. It will also be the first rally on this type of asphalt for Sébastien Ogier and Evgeny Novikov at the wheel of a WRC car. We can count on the expertise of Citroën Racing when it comes to defining the set-up of the C4 WRC, so we should be well-prepared for this event. A test programme from Tuesday to this Friday has allowed Sébastien Ogier and Conrad Rautenbach to work with the team in anticipation of this rally. Technically, the car preparation process is no more complex than it is for any gravel rally.” Two of the drivers are going to be completely new to driving a WRC challenger on the Catalan stages...is the priority to give them the maximum possible experience in these conditions? “Last year, when the C4 WRCs were run by Citroën Sport Technologies, Urmo Aava and Conrad Rautenbach showed themselves to be extremely competitive in Spain. This year our ambitions are firmly grounded, as we have the objective simply of seeing all our cars at the finish so that the drivers can reap the benefit of every kilometre that is run. They are more or less getting to grips with this event, compared to the old hands who are entirely comfortable with the territory. It will perhaps be a little more difficult compared to the previous rallies. But we would like to highlight once more the potential of our team.” After Spain, the final round of the season will see no fewer than five C4 WRCs running under the Citroën Junior Team banner in Great Britain. How will the team line up in Cardiff? “Alongside our three regular drivers, the Citroën Junior Team will also include Petter Solberg and Aaron Burkart. Aaron has claimed one World Rally Championship drive in a Citroën C4 WRC by finishing second on last year’s Junior WRC as part of the Citroën Junior Experience. It’s a fine reward for him and a good opportunity for him to show off his talents behind the wheel of the reigning World Champion car. As for Petter Solberg, he wished to maximise his possibilities by being nominated to score manufacturer points on the final round of the year, alongside Sébastien Ogier. It would have been a pity not to take advantage of the presence of a former World Champion; particularly one that has won the Rally Great Britain on four occasions. So it’s entirely natural that we should nominate him. He also fits in perfectly with the philosophy of the Citroën Junior Team, being a young driver who is after a factory seat!” Useful information 45 RallyRACC Catalunya – Costa Daurada (round 11/12) (1-4 October) Surface : asphalt Where : Salou Practical information : Rally HQ and the media centre are located in the new convention centre and PortAventura Resort. Matthew Mac Partlin Technical review Track safety devices – Run-offs and gravel traps Competitors and race vehicles can be fully prepared with safety equipment, but at some point or other a vehicle will unintentionally veer off the track. Sometimes the driver will be able to gather it up and rejoin the race, if there is sufficient space to do so. However, there is often a conflict between race track safety, spectator friendliness and geography. The safest track would probably be a straight road, with a wide run-off to either side and at either end and have no more Copyright Matthew Mac Partlin, 2010 Page 1 of 9 than a couple of cars competing on it at any one time. But it wouldn’t be terribly interesting to compete in or to watch.

  • Rallyracc Catalunya-Costa Daurada Rally De España More Than Any Other Round of the World Rally Ch
The Loudon-clear guide to… RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada Rally de España More than any other round of the World Rally Championship, this Catalan classic is one for the whole team. It’s a unique challenge across the whole year. Friday night in Salou is one of the highlights of the season as the world’s best drivers and co-drivers hand their too-tall gravel-rashed rally car over to the world’s best mechanics. And 75 minutes later, they’re handed back a hunkered-down Tar-snorting racer. Just in time for the weekend… I won’t be around in Catalunya, which is a real shame. My outing with Mohamed Al-Mutawaa and Abu Dhabi Racing in Corsica really gave me an insight into working with a top-level team and left me wanting more of the same. So, no Spain for me. I will, however, be doing the next best thing: the Mull Rally. John MacCrone and I are out for our second win in three years on one of the rally world’s best-kept secrets. We’re in a Ford Fiesta R5 and start on Friday night, stop around midnight, then re-start Saturday morning and go through until the early hours of Sunday. It’s fantastic competition on some incredible roads on an island just off the west coast of Scotland. Mull will bring to an end an incredible three-rally, three-weekend journey that’s taken me from Bastia to San Marino (Rallylegend with Alister McRae) to Tobermory. I’m only two-thirds down and it’s already been amazing.

8/03/06 15 Flash 5 days to go RACC Press • Tel. +34.93.495.50.29 www.rallyracc.com RallyRACC: an attractive and dynamic Service Park One of the spots that will gather one of the lar- gest numbers of fans and with no doubt will at- tract the interest of all professionals, companies, sponsors and guests of the 42 RallyRACC Cata- lunya-Costa Daurada/Rally de España will be the ever more attractive and spacious service park, which will be hosted for the second year in a row by the Port Aventura Theme Park, having become one of the reference areas of the Spanish round of the World Championship. The RACC, far from being satisfied with the excellent base achieved in 2005, has wanted to turn the screw even tig- hter and further increase the level of offers and organisation for the 2006 edition, which will be staged this year from 23 to 26 March. Located close to the shakedown area and to al- most all of the timed stages, the service park of the 42 RallyRACC will have its true nerve centre in the area of the Village, from where the activity of the Manufacturer 1 and 2 teams will be seen, thus offering an excellent chance to experience on site how the top teams of the WRC work. A further area to fill the service park with atmos- phere and colour will be the area reserved for the Junior WRC Teams (with 14 participating teams) and the area reserved for the single-make cup Ford Fiesta Sporting Trophy (8 teams).

Volume 2, Issue 7 December 2010 The Australasian Society for Motorsports Medicine and Rescue Contents Race control Motorsport review Recent race results Caught by the cameras Race control So another year of motor sporting draws to a close. The major categories have completed their seasons with some of the closest racing seen in the final events. Perhaps the persistent fiddling with the rules and rewards systems is paying off. The F1 had everyone madly working out the various permutations by which their favoured driver could finish on the top step, right up until the last lap in Bahrain. Loeb took his seventh World Rally championship title in his home town of Hagenot, in France, with two events left on the calendar. However, the WRC still ended on a nail-biter with the rising Sebastian Ogier challenging a much more consistent Jari-Matti Latvalla and an impressively resurgent Petter Solberg for second place. With a very satisfying end to the season, we also bid farewell to the current class of WRC cars, which will be replaced with shorter wheel base, 1600cc turbo engined car in 2011. Citroen will run a DS3, BP Ford a Fiesta RS and Mini will provide a third manufacturer in selected events with its Countryman model. The V8s finished their season in Sydney at the Homebush Bay circuit and was again replete with carnage and position changes, right up until the final lap, where Shane Van Gisbergen ran out of fuel while running in first place, yet managed to coast across the finish line in in third.

Rally de Portugal was the scene of victory for Thierry and Nicolas last year, and hopefully that memory will inspire them as they look to fight back from their big accident last time out on new territory in Chile, which ended their promising run on that event. It wasn’t all bad news on Rally Chile though, where Sébastien and Daniel did a great job to take their first podium finish as a Hyundai Motorsport crew in third and help keep our title hopes alive. Following that competitive performance, they will compete here in Portugal, with Andreas and Anders rejoining the team for Rally Italia Sardegna next month. This decision was not taken lightly. We need to move forward as a team and make the most effective use of our versatile crew line-up. Sébastien and Daniel had a competitive event in Chile, and have found a good feeling in the car on gravel. We felt their contribution would allow us to increase our points- scoring potential in Portugal. We are trying hard to find a way to get Andreas’s confidence back and we are sure he will approach his next event, Sardinia, in the same way he was able to in Argentina.

In their speeches, Sebastià Salvadó, pre- sident of the RACC, stated that “without the involvement of PortAventura and Salou it would be impossible to organise the RallyRACC with the compact format imposed by the FIA”, while Esteve Ferran, Mayor of Salou, highlighted the importance of the world championship round for the area: “The RallyRACC is a success in all aspects, therefore we are going to work in or- der to keep the race here for more than the two years we have agreed”. The presentation event of the 42 RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada counted also on the attendance of Luis Moya, former rally co-driver and current sports director of the official Subaru team, who did not doubt when it came to predicting the future of the young RACC driver, Daniel Sordo: “I’m sure that Dani is going to be a future World Champion. If it were for me, he would already be racing with Subaru”. Sordo will be one of the main points of interest in the race.
