Matthew Mac Partlin Technical review Track safety devices – Run-offs and gravel traps Competitors and race vehicles can be fully prepared with safety equipment, but at some point or other a vehicle will unintentionally veer off the track. Sometimes the driver will be able to gather it up and rejoin the race, if there is sufficient space to do so. However, there is often a conflict between race track safety, spectator friendliness and geography. Friday night in Salou is one of the highlights of the season as the world’s best drivers and co-drivers hand their too-tall gravel-rashed rally car over to the world’s best mechanics. And 75 minutes later, they’re handed back a hunkered-down Tar-snorting racer. Just in time for the weekend… I won’t be around in Catalunya, which is a real shame. My outing with Mohamed Al-Mutawaa and Abu Dhabi Racing in Corsica really gave me an insight into working with a top-level team and left me wanting more of the same. So, no Spain for me. I will, however, be doing the next best thing: the Mull Rally. John MacCrone and I are out for our second win in three years on one of the rally world’s best-kept secrets. We’re in a Ford Fiesta R5 and start on Friday night, stop around midnight, then re-start Saturday morning and go through until the early hours of Sunday. It’s fantastic competition on some incredible roads on an island just off the west coast of Scotland. Mull will bring to an end an incredible three-rally, three-weekend journey that’s taken me from Bastia to San Marino (Rallylegend with Alister McRae) to Tobermory. I’m only two-thirds down and it’s already been amazing.

    45 th RallyRACC Catalunya Costa Daurada (1–4 October 2009) – Preview The Citroën Junior Team gets back to asphalt The three Citroën Junior Team C4 WRCs of Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia, Conrad Rautenbach / Daniel Barritt and Evgeny Novikov / Stéphane Prévot are back on asphalt for the Catalunya Rally, round 11 of the 2009 FIA World Rally Championship, which takes place from October 1-4. On this surface, the three crews will concentrate on gaining valuable experience. A full eight months after the WRC got underway on the sodden asphalt of Ireland, the Citroën Junior Team returns to sealed surfaces in Spain. In weather that will hopefully be somewhat more clement, the crews will have to face a new set of conditions. While Citroën boasts an impressive record of four consecutive Catalunya victories, the Junior Team will be out primarily to gain experience. Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia and Conrad Rautenbach / Daniel Barritt will be the crews nominated to score manufacturer points. Evgeny Novikov, who is now co-driven by Belgium’s Stephane Prevot, is at the wheel of a third Citroën C4 WRC. Having first got to know the event with a C2 Super 1600, Sébastien Ogier will re-acquaint himself with the Catalan stages in a C4 WRC. The Equipe de France FFSA-backed driver put in an excellent performance on the rainy asphalt of Ireland, which bodes well for the future. “We learnt a huge amount in Ireland, which was only our second rally at the wheel of a WRC car,” he said. “Since then, we’ve managed to gain more experience on all sorts of different surfaces.

The major categories have completed their seasons with some of the closest racing seen in the final events. Perhaps the persistent fiddling with the rules and rewards systems is paying off. The F1 had everyone madly working out the various permutations by which their favoured driver could finish on the top step, right up until the last lap in Bahrain. Loeb took his seventh World Rally championship title in his home town of Hagenot, in France, with two events left on the calendar. However, the WRC still ended on a nail-biter with the rising Sebastian Ogier challenging a much more consistent Jari-Matti Latvalla and an impressively resurgent Petter Solberg for second place. With a very satisfying end to the season, we also bid farewell to the current class of WRC cars, which will be replaced with shorter wheel base, 1600cc turbo engined car in 2011. Citroen will run a DS3, BP Ford a Fiesta RS and Mini will provide a third manufacturer in selected events with its Countryman model. The V8s finished their season in Sydney at the Homebush Bay circuit and was again replete with carnage and position changes, right up until the final lap, where Shane Van Gisbergen ran out of fuel while running in first place, yet managed to coast across the finish line in in third.

    2019 MEDIA GUIDE Rally de Portugal May 30 - June 02, 2019 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 Rally de Portugal May 30 - June 02, 2019 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Portugal as we reach the halfway point in the 2019 World Rally Championship, where everyone at Hyundai Motorsport will be looking to continue our strong run so far this season. Rally de Portugal was the scene of victory for Thierry and Nicolas last year, and hopefully that memory will inspire them as they look to fight back from their big accident last time out on new territory in Chile, which ended their promising run on that event. It wasn’t all bad news on Rally Chile though, where Sébastien and Daniel did a great job to take their first podium finish as a Hyundai Motorsport crew in third and help keep our title hopes alive. Following that competitive performance, they will compete here in Portugal, with Andreas and Anders rejoining the team for Rally Italia Sardegna next month. This decision was not taken lightly. We need to move forward as a team and make the most effective use of our versatile crew line-up. Sébastien and Daniel had a competitive event in Chile, and have found a good feeling in the car on gravel.
