Anatolia is a private, non-profit educational institution founded in Merzifon, Asia Minor in 1886, incorporated in 1894 in , Massachusetts and located since 1922 on a 50-acre campus in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece. Anatolia consists of three schools operating on their own campuses: Anatolia Elementary (K-6), Anatolia College (gymnasium/lyceum/IBDP—7-12), and the American College of Thessaloniki (a NEASC-accredited and EU validated college awarding BS, BA, and Master Degrees).

Entrance to Anatolia gymnasium/lyceum & IB Diploma Program is based on competitive examinations in English, Greek and Math, and previous school records. The Greek secondary program has a fixed enrollment of 1,200 and IBDP currently has an enrollment of 160 students representing 7 nationalities. Anatolia College has a noteworthy financial aid program based on additional exams, individual interviews, and home visits. Approximately, 25% of our students receive merit and need-based scholarships, serving low-income and high needs students. These Anatolia Scholars bring to the institution greater economic and regional diversity, enriching the overall experience for all in our community.

CURRICULUM Anatolia College is licensed by the Greek Ministry of Education to grant the Greek school-leaving diploma “Apolyterio” at the end of grade 12. Most classes (except foreign languages) are taught in Greek. Due to very restrictive government guidelines, limited individual choice in classes is permitted until the last two years of lyceum, when students choose one of three university preparatory tracks: physical sciences, arts and humanities, or technology. The final Apolyterio grade for each subject is an average of the last two semester grades and the scores obtained in the end-of-year in-school written exams. Most students also opt to take the standardized national (Pan-Hellenic) university entrance examinations (as determined under Greek law). Anatolia’s 2018 graduating class had a 100% success rate entering the Greek university system, among the highest success rates in all of Greece. The school implements the standard curriculum prescribed by the Greek government, but does enrich it significantly in English, laboratory sciences, and computer science. Anatolia also departs from the norm of most Greek high schools by offering a rich and varied program of extra-curricular activities, conducted chiefly in English (including an internationally competitive debate team). In 2014, Anatolia introduced the IBO Middle Years Program for grades 7 through 10, providing a unique focus on service learning and project work.

THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM (INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE) The IB Diploma is an alternative program students can choose for the last two school years – a program taught in English with an additional Greek history, Greek language and literature supplement. All enrolled students are awarded the IB diploma (based on external exams) rather than the Greek Apolyterio and all students attending apply to universities abroad. Students who select to attend the IB program are not eligible for entry in Greek universities according to Greek university entry requirements. In 2018, Anatolia’s IBDP class had a 100% success rate entering universities internationally, with approximately 31% entering US universities, 52% entering UK universities, and 13% other countries. In preparation for this rigorous academic approach to learning, our gymnasium students (grades 7-9) are introduced to the MYP (Middle Years Program) curriculum. All subject areas take a holistic approach to learning centered on intercultural communication and collaborative learning, where our students develop into balanced and open-minded communicators on the pathway to becoming lifelong learners.

GRADING SYSTEM AND TERM The Greek Secondary grading system is based on a 20-point scale corresponding to the U.S. grading scheme as follows: 18.1-20=A, 16- 18=B, 13.1-15.9=C, 13-10=D, under 10=F. Aristeion Awards are given annually to outstanding students (equivalent to U.S. National Honor Roll). Colleges should note that the first semester / mid-year grades are not available before early February.

The IB Diploma Program grading system is based on a 7-point scale, with a minimum of 6 required courses, plus Theory of Knowledge and an extended essay, for a possible maximum grade of 45. The IB 2017 graduating class had official overall average of 5.25 per subject, as compared to the 4.70 average worldwide in the same subjects (with an overall diploma average of 33.5 out of 45 points as compared to the world wide average of 30/45). Colleges should note that the first term grades are available in early December, while the second term grades are available in late February. Mock exam results are available in early April. All school grades report achievement out of a maximum total of 42 points. Anatolia can provide a distribution of grades if the receiving admissions office so requests.

EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM Anatolia has always integrated the American tradition of extracurricular programs into the standard Greek educational system. Teachers, counselors, and students collaborate outside of the classroom and together discover and develop their interests (including: Drama, English and Greek debate, Science and Technology, Music, Sports, literary publications, etc.). About half of the 80 plus special clubs are conducted in English.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS In order to help Anatolia students extend learning beyond the classroom and into the community, in 2008 the College Counseling Office initiated Anatolia Volunteer Corps, Anatolians@Work, and Summer USA Program. AC Volunteer Corps offers community service learning projects (Government Refugee Center, NGOs, Peer-tutoring, etc.) designed to foster in students a sense of responsibility for community, changing lives of both recipient and volunteer. Anatolians@Work is an internship/mentorship program which introduces students to successful professionals willing to share their worlds by giving students an insider’s perspective into the careers that most interest them. Internships/mentorships (conducting lab research, working in consulates, creating advertisements for companies, and much more) take place in both Greece and the USA throughout the academic year and/or during summers. Summer USA Program Growing from a dozen students attending summer university programs in the USA, more than 1000 students have taken part in summer programs on US university campuses and internships in the USA since 2005, with more than 50% receiving partial or full scholarships.

CTY GREECE Anatolia College has partnered with and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to establish The Center for Talented Youth. “CTY Greece at Anatolia” identifies and educates gifted pre-college students from throughout Greece, SE Europe, and the Middle East in summer programs on campus.

USA FELLOWS For almost two decades now, Anatolia College has been hosting new U.S. college and university graduates living and working with Anatolia students (K-12) on an academic year Fellowship. The eight Anatolia Fellows work in various departments throughout campus, including US College Counseling, School Counseling, Elementary & Art Education, the President’s Office, the Student Residence Halls etc. The Fellows bring a fresh perspective and contemporary procedures to their assigned departments while Americanizing student life, giving students the opportunity to interact with Native English speakers and learn more about American culture, US university life, and educational opportunities.
