YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). Accepted 24 March, 2009 This paper presents the results of an assessment of the ethnobotanical uses of some plants recorded in upper Nyong valley forest implemented by the Cameroon wildlife conservation society project (CWCS). Forestry transects in 6 localities, followed by socio-economic study were conducted in 250 local inhabitants. As results, medicinal information on 140 plants species belonging to 60 families were recorded. Local people commonly use plant parts which included leaves, bark, seed, whole plant, stem and flower to cure many diseases. According to these plants, 8% are use to treat malaria while 68% intervenes to cure several others diseases as described on. There is very high demand for medicinal plants due to prevailing economic recession; however their prices are high as a result of prevailing genetic erosion. This report highlighted the need for the improvement of effective management strategies focusing on community forestry programmes and aims to encourage local people participation in the conservation of this forest heritage to achieve a sustainable plant biodiversity and conservation for future posterity. -

Most species are parasitic on terrestrial hosts, but a few occur only, or primarily, on other species of Phoradendron. We examined relationships among two obligate epiparasites, P. durangense and P. falcatum, and their parasitic hosts. Fruit and seed of both epiparasites were small compared to those of their parasitic hosts. Seed of epiparasites was established on parasitic-host stems, leaves, and inflorescences. Shoots developed from the plumular region or from buds on the holdfast or subjacent tissue. The developing endophytic system initially consisted of multiple separate strands that widened, merged, and often entirely displaced its parasitic host from the cambial cylinder. -

This work was undertaken in order to know the therapeutic uses of Ecology Research Center, Loranthaceae in the Sud-Comoé Region. Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted among regional trait University Nangui Abrogoua therapists for 3 years. In total, 7 species of Loranthaceae distributed in three genera are used to treat 33 (CRE / UNA). 08 BP 109 human diseases. Of these 33 diseases, 8 are constantly cited: diarrhea, tooth decay, high blood pressure, Abidjan 08, Côte d’Ivoire fontanelle, malaria, migraine, rheumatism and sterility. -

Macbride (Loranthaceae) DOI: 10.15446/rev.colomb.biote.v21n2.83410 ABSTRACT Hemiparasitic plants commonly known as mistletoe (muérdago in Spanish) in the families Santalaceae and Loranthaceae are com- mon in various kinds of plants or trees, and many hemiparasitic plants are used for medicinal purposes in various parts of the world. The objective of the present work, carried out in Psittacanthus linearis (suelda con suelda), a representative species in the seasonally dry forest (SDF) from the north of Perú, was to study aspects of in vitro tissue culture, carry out preliminary phytochemical analysis, and assess antibacterial activity. Seeds of individuals of P. linearis, which used Prosopis pallida (algarrobo) as host plant, were collect- ed and used to induce in vitro seed germination, clonal propagation, callus induction and organogenesis. Stems, leaves and fruits of individuals of P. linearis were dried, powdered, and subjected to ethanol extraction. Posteriorly the extract was first recovered with ethanol and the remnant with chloroform, which formed the ethanolic and chloroformic fraction. A preliminary phytochemical screening was performed and preliminary antibacterial studies with Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeru- ginosa were carried out and their results are discussed. This is the first report about in vitro tissue culture, phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activity of P. linearis. The results may have important implications for understanding physiological and biochemical interactions between host and hemiparasitic species as well as P. -

With the widespread introduction of trees to many parts of the world, it is becoming of increasing importance to know the susceptibility of trees introduced to new disease situations. Spaulding's comprehensive lists included forest tree diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, and viruses, but not the mistletoes. Therefore this publication on the mistletoes was prepared to supplement his work. Spaulding considered only forest trees, but the coverage here is expanded to include mistletoes parasitic on introduced forest, crop, orchard, and ornamental trees. In some instances, mistletoes are reported on trees cultivated within different parts of a country where the tree is native. Such records are included if it is indicated in the publication that the mistletoe in question is on planted trees. "Mistletoe" as used in this paper refers to any member of the fam- ilies Loranthaceae or Viscaceae. -
Phytochemical and Antioxidant Properties of Traditionally Used Mistletoes in Nepal

Abstract: Mistletoes are being used for food or beverage and for variety of medicinal purposes. In Nepal, mistletoes are traditionally used as fodder and as remedy to cure various ailments. In this study, methnolic extracts of seven common mistletoe species (Helixanthera ligustrina, Macrosolen cochinchinensis, Scurrula elata, S. parasitica, Viscum album, V. articulatum and V. liquidambaricola) were analyzed for their phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential. The total flavonoid content (TFC) and total phenol content (TPC) were quantitatively determined by aluminum chloride colorimetric and folin-cioalteau reagent methods, respectively. The TFC was found highest for V. album (31.5 ± 2.3 mg QE/g) and lowest for M. cochinchinensis (24.9 ± 2.3 mg QE/g). Similarly, highest total phenolic content was found in S. parasitica (32.9 ± 2.5 mg GAE/g) and lowest in V. album (20.6 ± 2.1 mg GAE/g). The antioxidant activity measured by DPPH radical scavenging assay was found best for S. parasitica (with lowest IC₅₀ value; 26.0 ± 0.7 µg/ml) among the studied mistletoes. Overall analysis provides scientific evidence in favor of indigenous use of these mistletoes as a source of fodder, food and for medicinal purposes. The study examined the local various uses of Loranthaceae species in Diamare plain of Cameroon. Participatory rural appraisal method was used with 130 persons, namely traditional healers, breeders, farmers and foresters in order to identify the local uses of Loranthaceae species. We used itinerary botanical survey method in thirty-two (32) villages for the inventory of Loranthaceae species. In each village, two (02) itineraries (1000 m x 20 m) were realized on account of one itinerary in an agrosystem and one itinerary in a natural site. Results revealed five categories of uses of Loranthaceae: human traditional pharmacopoeia, fodder, magical use, ritual use and veterinary medicine. Knowledge of Loranthaceae uses was broadly influenced by age of respondents, traditional healers and people over 41 years old were the major libraries of knowledge on Loranthaceae. Human traditional pharmacopoeia (96.92%) and magical use (82.30%) were the most important categories of uses. The Loranthaceae of Madagascar and of the Neighboring Archipelagos

BALLE INTRODUCTION The Loranthaceae are represented in Madagascar and in the neighboring Archipelagos by 4 genera, including 2 endemic to Loranthoideae (Bakerella and Socratina) and 2 to Viscoideae with very wide area (Korthalsella and Viscum) (cf. Pl. 1). More than 600 observed specimens are distributed there in 51 species. If, in Madagascar and in the neighboring Archipelagos, there are only 2 genera of Loranthoideae, there are about twenty on the African continent and ten in India. On the other hand, Viscoideae are known only for one more genus (Arceuthobium) in continental Africa than in Madagascar and it is very rare there (only one species, represented by a few specimens only in Ethiopia); in India, we find, in addition to the 3 aforementioned genera of Viscoideae: Ginalloa and Notothixos. The characters of the Loranthaceae from Africa were recently pre-targeted (5) and will be mainly used in the Flora of Madagascar, whose Loranthaceae will appear at the same time as this; they will therefore not be repeated here. A provisional enumeration of the African genera of Loranthoideae was presented in Webbia (3) and somewhat modified thereafter (1b); it will only become final after confirmation, by an ongoing study, of the palynological and anatomical characters; but, whatever the generic classification that will ultimately be adopted, we can already see that the evolution of the Loranthoideae was done in a completely different way, in Madagascar and on the Continent, than that of the Viscoideae1. -

ABSTRACT Background: We revisit the palaeopalynological record of Loranthaceae, using pollen ornamentation to discriminate lineages and to test molecular dating estimates for the diversification of major lineages. Methods: Fossil Loranthaceae pollen from the Eocene and Oligocene are analysed and documented using scanning-electron microscopy. These fossils were associated with molecular-defined clades and used as minimum age constraints for Bayesian node dating using different topological scenarios. Results: The fossil Loranthaceae pollen document the presence of at least one extant root-parasitic lineage (Nuytsieae) and two currently aerial parasitic lineages (Psittacanthinae and Loranthinae) by the end of the Eocene in the Northern Hemisphere. Phases of increased lineage diversification (late Eocene, middle Miocene) coincide with global warm phases.
