Acknowledgments This thesis represents the composite of my three foremost academic interests: literature, women’s rights and advocacy, and the Middle East. In the summer of 2011, just before beginning my junior year of college, I spent two months studying and researching the graphic memoir Persepolis as a participant in the Summer Social Sciences and Humanities Fellowship through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). This experience not only helped me to hone my skills as a writer and researcher, but also allowed me to explore my interest in the ways in which Iranian women’s memoirs have been shaped by politics both in their native land and within the United States. I am forever grateful to the UROP program for this unique opportunity to delve further into my studies and discover the questions that I most wanted to answer in this thesis. More specifically, I owe a great deal of thanks to Jennifer Peacock for advising me throughout this process and for serving as a mentor throughout my college career. Iran Behrooz Mahmoodi Bakhtiari Department of Performing Art, Fine Art, Tehran University, Tehran, Iran Received: 23 March 2020 Accepted: 23 May 2020 Abstract Given the significance of cultural considerations and cultural categories in determining appropriate translation equivalents, this paper discusses the cultuling of ‘insult’ based on Iraj Pezeshkzad’s My Uncle Napoleon translated by Dick Davis into English and the original Persian version of the novel where there can be found so many linguistic segments containing or conveying insulting connotations. Cultuling refers to those pieces of language which are the manifestation of cultural concepts since language is the representation of culture, and it is also bounded by culture. The investigation of insults just like cursing and swearing are common issues in language and culture, especially when considered in two languages. That is the real motive for conducting the present inquiry, and more importantly, perfect translation needs cultural knowledge. As for the research methodology, Del Hymes’s (1967) SPEAKING model as a discourse/ qualitative method as well as frequency effects as the quantitative method were employed. Applying this methodology, the speakers’ motivation for the use of insults is found in this culture. Moreover, the cultural differences leading to and manifested in linguistic differences are discussed. Meanwhile, strategies for appropriate equivalents were laid out. The results are of use and value for the entrenchment of the cognitive-cultural views of translation studies as well as socio-cultural studies of linguistic issues. -

MARIJETA BOZOVIC OFFICE: 2708 HGS [email protected] TEACHING FELLOWS: AURA YOUNG aura.young@yale DARIA EZEROVA [email protected] DESCRIPTION: In 1955, Vladimir Nabokov published Lolita for the first time in Paris, with an infamous press; in 1958 he published it once more in New York. His life—and arguably the English-language and transnational novel—was never the same. By 1962, Nabokov had collaborated on the film with Stanley Kubrick; the term “lolita” had entered popular language; and by the middle of the decade, he was the most famous living writer in the world. This lecture course will begin with the novels (and films) that made Nabokov famous, then move back in time to trace the origins of the international literary legend in the young Russian émigré fleeing the Revolution. We end with a number of works of world literature inspired and haunted by Nabokov, from Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran, J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace, Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence, to W.G. Sebald’s novel The Emigrants. We will speak of exile, memory and nostalgia; hybrid cultural identities and cosmopolitan elites; language, translation and multilingualism. All readings will be in English. Reading between the Lines: Culture as Propaganda Reading Lolita in Tehran by Nasrin Jewell and Margaret Sarfehjooy The cover photo of Reading Lolita in Tehran was cleverly and dishonestly designed to entice Western readers, insinuating that these repressed young women were bravely resisting the restraints of their backward Islamic culture to become enlightened by Western culture. The original photo was actually taken from a news report during Iran’s 2000 parliamentary election. The young women are reading the results.. “Not since Betty Mahmoodi’s book Not without My Daughter (1984) has any book shown such hatred of everything Iranian. This puts Nafisi squarely in support of U.S. policies for demonizing Iran. ”Reading Lolita in Tehran, written by Azar Nafisi, has unfortunately become an important resource for understanding Iran, its policies, its culture and its people, and especially the life of its women. Many book clubs have read and eXtensively discussed this novel, assuming that they are getting an insider’s view. It has even been used as a teXtbook in many universities. Therefore, it is important to understand the context of this kind of Orientalist discourse and its role in our perception of a compleX and nuanced society. The influential cultural critic Edward Said is the author of Orientalism. In it, he dealt with false assumptions underlying Western attitudes toward the Middle East, and warned against native informants as the new mode of fuel for Orientalist ideology. Fatemeh Keshavarz, chair of the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literature at Washington University and author of Jasmine and Stars: Reading More than Lolita in Tehran, broadly characterizes the New Orientalist works: "Thematically, (these books) stay focused on the public phobia (of Islam and the Islamic world) blind faith and cruelty, political underdevelopment, and women's social and seXual repression. -

GHAREHGOZLOU, BAHAREH, Ph.D., August 2018 TRANSLATION STUDIES A STUDY OF PERSIAN-ENGLISH LITERARY TRANSLATION FLOWS: TEXTS AND PARATEXTS IN THREE HISTORICAL CONTEXTS (261 PP.) Dissertation Advisor: Françoise Massardier-Kenney This dissertation addresses the need to expand translation scholarship through the inclusion of research into different translation traditions and histories (D’hulst 2001: 5; Bandia 2006; Tymoczko 2006: 15; Baker 2009: 1); the importance of compiling bibliographies of translations in a variety of translation traditions (Pym 1998: 42; D’hulst 2010: 400); and the need for empirical studies on the functional aspects of (translation) paratexts (Genette 1997: 12–15). It provides a digital bibliography that documents what works of Persian literature were translated into English, by whom, where, and when, and explores how these translations were presented to Anglophone readers across three historical periods—1925–1941, 1942–1979, and 1980–2015— marked by important socio-political events in the contemporary history of Iran and the country’s shifting relations with the Anglophone West. Through a methodical search in the library of congress catalogued in OCLC WorldCat, a bibliographical database including 863 editions of Persian-English literary translations along with their relevant metadata—titles in Persian, authors, translators, publishers, and dates and places of publication—was compiled and, through a quantitative analysis of this bibliographical data over time, patterns of translation publication across the given periods -
