Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

Occupy! is an unofficial record of the movement and combines first-hand accounts with reflections from activist academics and writers. Jason Hickel finds the book has excellent moments of insight but thought it could benefit from a more lengthy analysis. Occupy! Scenes from Occupied America. Astra Taylor and Keith Gessen (eds). Verso. 2011. Find this book When a small group of activists first occupied Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan last September nobody thought it would amount to much. But it wasn’t long before Occupy Wall Street struck a chord with a nation embittered by bank bailouts, plutocracy, and rising social inequalities, galvanized hundreds of thousands of angry protestors, and inspired similar encampments in dozens of cities across the United States and Europe. As a scholar who followed OWS closely with both personal and scholarly interest, I was thrilled to get my hands on Occupy!: Scenes from Occupied America, one of the first book-length texts to have been published on the topic. Occupy! was composed in an unconventional style. It compiles 34 short chapters and dozens of sketches and photographs selected and edited by a team of eight scholar-activists, mostly from radical journals in New York such as n+1 and Dissent, led by Astra Taylor and Keith Gessen. -

TransCultural Express: American and Russian Arts Today presents a night of contemporary Russian arts at BAM on June 5 Visual artist Irina Korina to unveil her first art installation in the US; Authors/journalists Masha Gessen and Keith Gessen to discuss their work at Eat, Drink & Be Literary Brooklyn, NY/May 28, 2013—A site-specific installation by Moscow-based artist Irina Korina and a literary program featuring Masha Gessen and Keith Gessen will bring contemporary Russian culture to Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on June 5, as part of the initial programming of TransCultural Express: American and Russian Arts Today—a collaborative venture between BAM and the Mikhail Prokhorov Fund. Acclaimed Russian literary siblings Masha Gessen (The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin) and Keith Gessen (contributor to The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Review of Books) will discuss their work and lives within two cultures with famed author Phillip Lopate on June 5. This is part of BAM’s popular Eat, Drink & Be Literary series, where audiences wine and dine while hearing leading authors read from their work. Unveiling the Middle Eastern Memoir: Reconfiguring Images of Iranian Women Through Post-9/11 Memoirs by Kristyn Acho A thesis presented for the B. Acknowledgments This thesis represents the composite of my three foremost academic interests: literature, women’s rights and advocacy, and the Middle East. In the summer of 2011, just before beginning my junior year of college, I spent two months studying and researching the graphic memoir Persepolis as a participant in the Summer Social Sciences and Humanities Fellowship through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). This experience not only helped me to hone my skills as a writer and researcher, but also allowed me to explore my interest in the ways in which Iranian women’s memoirs have been shaped by politics both in their native land and within the United States. I am forever grateful to the UROP program for this unique opportunity to delve further into my studies and discover the questions that I most wanted to answer in this thesis. More specifically, I owe a great deal of thanks to Jennifer Peacock for advising me throughout this process and for serving as a mentor throughout my college career. MARIJETA BOZOVIC OFFICE: 2708 HGS [email protected] TEACHING FELLOWS: AURA YOUNG aura.young@yale DARIA EZEROVA [email protected] DESCRIPTION: In 1955, Vladimir Nabokov published Lolita for the first time in Paris, with an infamous press; in 1958 he published it once more in New York. His life—and arguably the English-language and transnational novel—was never the same. By 1962, Nabokov had collaborated on the film with Stanley Kubrick; the term “lolita” had entered popular language; and by the middle of the decade, he was the most famous living writer in the world. This lecture course will begin with the novels (and films) that made Nabokov famous, then move back in time to trace the origins of the international literary legend in the young Russian émigré fleeing the Revolution. We end with a number of works of world literature inspired and haunted by Nabokov, from Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran, J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace, Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence, to W.G. Sebald’s novel The Emigrants. We will speak of exile, memory and nostalgia; hybrid cultural identities and cosmopolitan elites; language, translation and multilingualism. All readings will be in English. Reading between the Lines: Culture as Propaganda Reading Lolita in Tehran by Nasrin Jewell and Margaret Sarfehjooy The cover photo of Reading Lolita in Tehran was cleverly and dishonestly designed to entice Western readers, insinuating that these repressed young women were bravely resisting the restraints of their backward Islamic culture to become enlightened by Western culture. The original photo was actually taken from a news report during Iran’s 2000 parliamentary election. The young women are reading the results.. “Not since Betty Mahmoodi’s book Not without My Daughter (1984) has any book shown such hatred of everything Iranian. This puts Nafisi squarely in support of U.S. policies for demonizing Iran. ”Reading Lolita in Tehran, written by Azar Nafisi, has unfortunately become an important resource for understanding Iran, its policies, its culture and its people, and especially the life of its women. Many book clubs have read and eXtensively discussed this novel, assuming that they are getting an insider’s view. It has even been used as a teXtbook in many universities. Therefore, it is important to understand the context of this kind of Orientalist discourse and its role in our perception of a compleX and nuanced society. The influential cultural critic Edward Said is the author of Orientalism. In it, he dealt with false assumptions underlying Western attitudes toward the Middle East, and warned against native informants as the new mode of fuel for Orientalist ideology. Fatemeh Keshavarz, chair of the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literature at Washington University and author of Jasmine and Stars: Reading More than Lolita in Tehran, broadly characterizes the New Orientalist works: "Thematically, (these books) stay focused on the public phobia (of Islam and the Islamic world) blind faith and cruelty, political underdevelopment, and women's social and seXual repression. -

In addition to learning about the colonial and postcolonial history of a major metropolis, you will master basic spatial mapping techniques through online tutorials and in consultation with the spatial data librarian at Butler, and the Empirical Reasoning Lab (Barnard). The course is likely to involve a significant time commitment. Bombay/Mumbai’s built form reflects the social and spatial uneven-ness of (colonial) capital, while its distinctive urbanity is the product of the everyday lives and aspirations of those who inhabit it. When was Bombay? Bombay’s transformation from an early-modern port city to British India’s commercial and manufacturing hub (and now, megacity) is linked with global economic forces: the city experienced meteoric rise in the aftermath of the American Civil War due to a booming cotton economy. New technologies for rationalizing production and accelerating the circulation of Bombay cotton soon followed. Meanwhile, the plague of 1897 provided planners and government officials with an alibi for mass demolitions, and enabled them to undertake extensive experiments in urban governance and industrial housing. Bombay’s famed cosmopolitanism is thus a vestige of social practices and cultural experiences produced by the contradictory forces of colonial capital: spatial regulation, together with social emancipation.
