163 The Object-Gaze: Shame, Hejab, Cinema Joan Copjec The method for torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib was chosen because it was assumed that the Islamic modesty system, or hejab, makes Muslims especially vulnerable to shame. Through an examination of the films of the Iranian filmmaker, Abbas Kiarostami, who directs films under the censorship rules imposed by hejab, and an examination of the philosoph- ical and psychoanalytic literature on shame, this paper calls into ques- tion both the assumption of the torturers and many of the restraints of the modesty system. ranian films are an exotic experience for audiences accustomed to Hollywood-dominated cinema. One of the most spectacular heralds of Iran’s 1978-1979 Islamic Revo- lution was the torching of spectacle. Movie theatres - in one horrific case, with the audience still in it - were set on fire, incinerated by fundamental- ists. Fittingly, in this respect, Khomeini spoke, in his very first public ap- pearance as Iran’s new leader, not only of his intent to restore the authority of the mullahs and purge the country of all foreign influences, Eastern and Western; he also directly addressed the question of cinema. As might be ex- pected, he vehemently denounced it as “prostitution,” as the “Shah’s cine- ma,” but he deliberately refrained from banning it outright as a wicked mod- ern invention. -

The very ideological foundation of every civilizational discourse is primarily based on their onto-epistemological premises. One of most influential master- pieces of 20th century, Edward Said’s Orientalism, set the trend for contextual- izing the way in which Western discourse represented and constructed Eastern discourse. Limiting the import of this work only to a literary contribution was intentionally aimed to intellectually undermine its “compelling arguments” to deconstruct the colonial hegemony of post-Renaissance Eurocentric premise of Western thought. The argument started by Edward Said became the pri- mary precursor for some of most known intellectuals and Hamid Dabashi, being one of the closest admirers and followers of Edward Said, took up this task of furthering the intellectual legacy of his mentor. The foreword by Wal- ter Mignolo, one of the well-known specialists in colonial/postcolonial critical circles has buttressed the argument of this boldly unconventional and intellec- tually eponymous project. The book, “Can Non-EuropeansThink” by Hamid Dabashi, demonstrates why Edward Said and his critique of Orientalism is relevant today more than ever, especially with the epistemic shift of political culture in the Arab World. Authorities executed her for heresy in 1852. After death, Táhirih attracted admirers around the world; Western writers—especially women—have interpreted her history to argue for gender equality, religious renewal, and global interdependence. This Middle Eastern preacher has established a posthumous pulpit in the United States, as members of the Bahá’í Faith there have authored a dozen books about her. After introducing Táhirih’s rhetorical rebellions, this essay demonstrates her transnational influence by analyzing her afterlives in U.S. Bahá’í discourse. Salaam. Hello. My name is Soraya Brouckhim. I will be reading from My Sister, Guard your Veil; My Brother, Guard Your Eyes: Uncensored Iranian Voices. I will be reading two excerpts. And here we go. “How Can One be Persian?” by Marjane Satrapi. “We are set, stuck, really, somewhere between Scheherazade’s famed 1001 Nights and the bearded terrorist, with his manic wife disguised as a pro. By way of flattery we are told that we are Persians, and that Persia was a great empire. Otherwise, we are Iranians. The Persians are in Montesquieu’s writings and Delacroix’s paintings, and they smoke opium with Victor Hugo. As for Iranians, they take American hostages, they detonate bombs, and they are pissed at the West. They were discovered after the 1979 Revolution. (laughter) To begin with, let me remember that ‘Persia’ is the Greek terminology for Iran. The Greeks chose this name for our country because when Greece became a powerful nation, Iran was ruled by the Achaemenids, who were Persians, since they dwelled in the regions of Persis. But, Iran, for the last four thousand years, and for all Iranians, has always been Iran and it was actually Reza Shah, the last Shah’s father, who in 1935 requested that every European refer to our country by its real name, Iran. -

Corey McCall 2013 ISSN: 1832-5203 Foucault Studies, No. 15, pp. 27-51, February 2013 ARTICLE Ambivalent Modernities: Foucault’s Iranian Writings Reconsidered Corey McCall, Elmira College ABSTRACT: This essay reconsiders Foucault’s writings on the Iranian Revolution in the con- text of his thought during 1977-1979. The essay defends three related claims: (1) Foucault does not turn away from power toward ethics as many scholars have claimed, (2) Careful interpre- tation of the texts on the Iranian Revolution will help us to better understand Foucault’s essays and lecture courses from this period (in particular, the relationship between political spirituali- ty and counter-conduct), and (3) During this period Foucault is working on conceptualizing modernity as a multivalent set of practices—some that reinforce power relations and some that resist them. Keywords: Iran, political spirituality, pastoral power, governmentality, modernity. Recent interpreters of Foucault have sought to situate his thought during the late 1970s in the context of his work on neoliberalism in The Birth of Biopolitics. Indeed, some have gone so far as to argue that Foucault retracts much of his previous work on power in favor of an articula- tion of an individual ethics.1 Interpreters detect the beginning of a turn away from power and an orientation toward the ethical concerns that will occupy him in his final writings during this period. I argue that if we attend to his texts on the Iranian Revolution from 1978-1979, a more complex and interesting picture emerges. Foucault is not renouncing power; on the con- trary, he is trying to reconceive his conception of power as struggle to a conception of power as the conducting of conduct. -

Welcome to the Guest Editors When I first spoke to Lesley Klaff about the possibility of JSA hosting ESA conference papers, I was not exactly certain what was involved. For several years, ESA’s roster of paper presentations was top notch and often included key conceptualizations not found elsewhere. I wanted to make certain that some of the field’s best thinkers were receiving their due. JSA was located in North America, ESA was located in Europe and the gap needed to be bridged. My appreciation to Karin Stoegner and her team for their perseverance in making such fine work available to others. The papers have in common a distinct European flavor—they are nuanced and contextual driven. Except for David Patterson, the authors are European offering their perspective from what has become ground zero in displays of the new antisemitism. Europe is also ground zero for the old antisemitism and the context of the Holocaust affords certain insights that North Americans have yet to fully understand. -

But in conveying knowledge, the academy has a far more important and subversive way of dealing with po- litical issues. Knowledge provides us with a way to perceive the world. Imagina- If we manage to tive knowledge provides us with a way to see ourselves in the world, to relate to teach our students the world, and thereby, to act in the world. The way we perceive ourselves is re- flected in the way we interact, the way we take our positions, and the way we in- to be curious— terpret politics. not to take up our Curiosity, the desire to know what one does not know, is essential to genuine political positions, knowledge. Especially in terms of literature, it is a sensual longing to know but just to be through experiencing others—not only the others in the world, but also the others within oneself. MARIJETA BOZOVIC OFFICE: 2708 HGS [email protected] TEACHING FELLOWS: AURA YOUNG aura.young@yale DARIA EZEROVA [email protected] DESCRIPTION: In 1955, Vladimir Nabokov published Lolita for the first time in Paris, with an infamous press; in 1958 he published it once more in New York. His life—and arguably the English-language and transnational novel—was never the same. By 1962, Nabokov had collaborated on the film with Stanley Kubrick; the term “lolita” had entered popular language; and by the middle of the decade, he was the most famous living writer in the world. This lecture course will begin with the novels (and films) that made Nabokov famous, then move back in time to trace the origins of the international literary legend in the young Russian émigré fleeing the Revolution. We end with a number of works of world literature inspired and haunted by Nabokov, from Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran, J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace, Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence, to W.G. Sebald’s novel The Emigrants. We will speak of exile, memory and nostalgia; hybrid cultural identities and cosmopolitan elites; language, translation and multilingualism. All readings will be in English.
