Authorities executed her for heresy in 1852. After death, Táhirih attracted admirers around the world; Western writers—especially women—have interpreted her history to argue for gender equality, religious renewal, and global interdependence. This Middle Eastern preacher has established a posthumous pulpit in the United States, as members of the Bahá’í Faith there have authored a dozen books about her. In the summer of 2011, just before beginning my junior year of college, I spent two months studying and researching the graphic memoir Persepolis as a participant in the Summer Social Sciences and Humanities Fellowship through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). This experience not only helped me to hone my skills as a writer and researcher, but also allowed me to explore my interest in the ways in which Iranian women’s memoirs have been shaped by politics both in their native land and within the United States. Journal of Research Islamic Art Studies, Volume 15, Issue 35, Autumn 2019 Descriptive and Visual Metaphors in the Poetry of Nima Yushijj and Mehdi Akhavan Saleh (with a Critical Discourse Approach of Fairclough) Jafarimoghadam Tahere1 Falahi Manijeh*2 Farokhzad Malek Mohamad3 Abstract One way of expressing technique is to use metaphor in its general sense - to use one word or phrase instead of another based on the similarity between them. The use of metaphor as linguistic phenomena is not general in the literary language but specifically cognitive and mental occurrences, and what appears in language is merely a manifestation of this mental phenomenon. On the other hand, this cognitive and subjective expression of thoughts can be analyzed and interpreted in the context of critical discourse and linguistic criticism. The use of descriptive and intuitive metaphors in the poems of Nima Yushijj and Mehdi Akhavan Saleh can be one of the examples of critical discourse analysis approach from Fairclough's perspective. Accordingly, although the approach of critical discourse analysis prioritizes the relation of language, power, ideology, and discourse, the literature of nations can also be analyzed and interpreted within the framework of critical discourse and linguistic criticism. In this descriptive-analytical research based on library studies, after studying the poems of these two poets, the descriptive and visual metaphors of the poems have been identified and quantitatively and qualitatively studied. Finally, by comparing the sonnets of Yushiij and Akhavan, it can be concluded that the metaphorical application of the prevailing political and social conditions and conditions in the Akhavan’s poems can be more conclusive. -

Reading between the Lines: Culture as Propaganda Reading Lolita in Tehran by Nasrin Jewell and Margaret Sarfehjooy The cover photo of Reading Lolita in Tehran was cleverly and dishonestly designed to entice Western readers, insinuating that these repressed young women were bravely resisting the restraints of their backward Islamic culture to become enlightened by Western culture. The original photo was actually taken from a news report during Iran’s 2000 parliamentary election. The young women are reading the results.. “Not since Betty Mahmoodi’s book Not without My Daughter (1984) has any book shown such hatred of everything Iranian. This puts Nafisi squarely in support of U.S. policies for demonizing Iran. ”Reading Lolita in Tehran, written by Azar Nafisi, has unfortunately become an important resource for understanding Iran, its policies, its culture and its people, and especially the life of its women. Many book clubs have read and eXtensively discussed this novel, assuming that they are getting an insider’s view. It has even been used as a teXtbook in many universities. Therefore, it is important to understand the context of this kind of Orientalist discourse and its role in our perception of a compleX and nuanced society. The influential cultural critic Edward Said is the author of Orientalism. In it, he dealt with false assumptions underlying Western attitudes toward the Middle East, and warned against native informants as the new mode of fuel for Orientalist ideology. Fatemeh Keshavarz, chair of the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literature at Washington University and author of Jasmine and Stars: Reading More than Lolita in Tehran, broadly characterizes the New Orientalist works: "Thematically, (these books) stay focused on the public phobia (of Islam and the Islamic world) blind faith and cruelty, political underdevelopment, and women's social and seXual repression. -

Before I start, let me say that this talk may be a little different from what you’re used to. While in some ways it’s a literary talk, it’s also really a “shop talk” or a “teaching talk.” Even for those of you who are not teachers, or don’t plan to be future teachers, I hope you will find something useful in the question: are there right and wrong ways to study a foreign literature? My title is guilty of something I usually try to avoid: it’s written from a distinctly western point of view in the voice of a scholar (that would be me!) who is working very hard to read “the East” without reinscribing the Us vs.Them (east versus west) binary logic of Orientalism. -

COMMENTARY BY ANDREA TROCHA-VAN NORT Too Sexy for a Veil? Lipstick Jihad: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America and American in Iran by Azadeh Moaveni Publicaffairs, 2005 ebruary 2003. I was teaching literature at the American University of Paris. Parking spaces were blocked off in front of the university’s buildings, and anyone entering glanced around first for camionettes, any Fsmall, suspicious vehicle nearby. It was certainly not the time or place to be a student named “Jihad.” But his name was indeed Jihad, and he was my student. I spoke his name with a French accent to avoid an indecorous reiteration of TV-speak—a jihad, holy war, crusade. Jihad himself seemed untroubled by the eyebrows his name raised. His casual mien and sartorial sprezzatura spoke of wealth and elegance, complete ease with his person, his history, his future. In truth, he avoided not only coursework but also my gaze during in-class discussions. Jihad graduated that May with a job awaiting him at the family firm in New York. What sort of a name is “Jihad,” anyway, I often asked myself; what does it really mean? In the West we have suggestive names such as Clement, Constance, and Christopher, but these imply character traits diametrically opposed to those I ingenuously associated with “jihad.” There had to be more to the word. In her book Lipstick Jihad, Azadeh Moaveni supplied my answer: the classical meaning of the word “jihad” in Arabic means “struggle.”1 So, why on earth would wildly affluent Saudi parents name their son Jihad? With a much less controversial name than my Jihad, author Azadeh Moaveni wished nonetheless as a young girl to change “Azadeh” (which in Farsi means freeborn, noble or free-minded) to the more conventional “Elizabeth” (9). -
