CHAPTER SIX EPILOGUE 230 Shivaji fought Mughals in the north and Bijapuri Sultans in the south and carved out an independent kingdom of his own out of his small Jagir of Poona. He had rare gifted qualities of winning the heart of common people, who became the basis of his Swarajya i.e., kingdom. He was a great military genius and a diplomat and above all a man of creative ability. He coronated himself on the 6th June, 1674 and declared to the world that he became independent sovereign ruler. He also declared to the world that he was no longer a jahagirdar but an independent sovereign ruler. Shivaji also founded his own administrative institutions such as Ashta Pradhan Mandal'*', a new system of military and civil administration etc. This system was based on regular payment to the officers and soldiers. They were also not hereditary. They continued in their respective position as long as they carried on their duties well. He discontinued the practice of giving lands, jagirs, saranjams to the officers including his ministers. His ministers were advisers, and remained in their offices as long as they enjoyed his confidence. The function of Shivaji*s council was merely advisory. All decision-making authority finally rested in him. Chhatrapati represented sovereign power both in theory and practice. Thus in Shivaji's time Chhatrapati was the fountain of final authority and of all sources of power. After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji on 5th April 1680, 231 Shivaji's elder son Sambhaji became Chhatrapati in the circumstances of stresses and strains. -

Know the Persian sources of Maratha history. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The history of Marathas can be best studied with the help of first hand source material like Bakhars, State papers, court Histories, Chronicles and accounts of contemporary travelers, who came to India and made observations of Maharashtra during the period of Marathas. The Maratha scholars and historians had worked hard to construct the history of the land and people of Maharashtra. Among such scholars people like Kashinath Sane, Rajwade, Khare and Parasnis were well known luminaries in this field of history writing of Maratha. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century. There is much more them contribution of the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal, Pune to this regard. -

Chiru is an endangered Kuki-Chin language of Tibeto-Burman language family (Grierson 1904) spoken by 8599 speakers (Census of India: 2011). Harmony is a term used in phonology to refer to the way the articulation of one phonological unit is influenced by another unit in the same word or phrase (Crystal 1997). An analogous notion is that of assimilation. The two main processes are consonant harmony and vowel harmony. Interestingly vowel harmony is found only in a few languages among Kuki-Chin groups, viz., Biate, Chiru etc. Most of the Kuki-Chin languages like Thadou, do not have vowel harmony. The vowel harmony in Chiru mainly occurs in pronominal prefixes and genitives of the first and third persons, causative prefixes, numeral prefixes and a few disyllabic words. This phonological process in Chiru is due to the regressive assimilation of vowels in which the vowel phoneme in the first syllable is influenced by the vowel phoneme in the following syllable to become identical to each other in a word. Keywords: Chiru, Kuki-Chin, Vowel harmony Introduction Chiru, the language spoken by the Chiru people, belongs to the Kuki-Chin group of the Tibeto-Burman language family (Grierson 1904). Chiru is one of the thirty-three recognised tribal languages of Manipur. The total population of Chiru speakers is only 8599 (census of India: 2011). -

Problems with Unicode for Languages Unsupported by Computers Pat Hall, Language Technology Kendra, Patan, Nepal [email protected] Abstract If a language is to be used on the Internet it needs to be written and that writing encoded for the computer. The problems of achieving this for small languages is illustrated with respect to Nepal. Nepal has over 120 languages, with only the national language Nepali having any modern computer support. Nepali is relatively easy, since it is written in Devanagari which is also used for Hindi and other Indian languages, though with some local differences. I focus on the language of the Newar people, a language which has a mature written tradition spanning more than one thousand years, with several different styles of writing, and yet has no encoding of its writing within Unicode. Why has this happened? I explore this question, looking for answers in the view of technology of the people involved, in their different and possibly competing interests, and in the incentives for working on standards. I also explore what should be done about the many other unwritten and uncomputerised languages of Nepal. We are left with serious concerns about the standardisation process, but appreciate that encoding is critically important and we must work with the standardisation process as we find it.. Introduction If we are going to make knowledge written in our language available to everybody in their own languages, those languages must be written and that writing must be encoded in the computer. Those of us privileged to be native speakers of a world language such as English or Spanish may think this is straightforward, but it is not, as will be explained here. -

It is the language of Newar, mostly local inhabitant of Kathmandu. The once administrative language, Nepal Bhasa has been replaced by Nepali (Khas) language and has a limited area where it can be used. The language has faced almost 100 years of suppression and now is listed in the definitely endangered language list of UNESCO. Various revitalization programs have been brought up, but with limited success. This main goal of this thesis on Nepal Bhasa is to find the actual reason behind the fall of this language and hesitation of the people who know Nepal Bhasa to use it. -

Reviewed by David Hargreaves There is more than a little irony in the fact that although Newar has one of the oldest written traditions in the Tibeto-Burman family, there as never been, until now, a comprehensive reference grammar of the modern language available to western scholarship. The historical reference dictionary and grammar of Hans Jørgenson (1931; 1941) has stood for some time as the primary source for historical material. The most important recent historical contribution is the newly completed and monumentally valuable Dictionary of Classical Newari : Complied by Dictionary Sources, produced by the Nepal Bhasa Dictionary Committee under the guidance of chief editor K.P. Malla. The Newar language tradition has itself produced several fine reference works, but they remain mostly unread, except by Newar speaking students and scholars. Since 1985, the excellent work by K.P. Malla, The Newari Language: A Working Outline has been the standard English language reference, but even the author’s introduction concedes it is but “a preliminary step.” Thus, despite many fine individual works on a wide range of individual topics, a full reference grammar of Newar remained unavailable, until now. -

Articles Pradhan 2 | Next | Section Menu | Main Menu | Pradhan From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Pradhan (Devanagari: धान) is a ministerial title used in regions of Hindu cultural tradition that equates to the more popular term Vizier in rank and function.[1][2] The Sanskrit pradhan translates to "major" or "prime";[3] however, the more modern Hindi definitions provided by the Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary also include "chief" and "leader".[4] The precise interpretation can differ significantly by region. The style was abandoned by many Indian princely states during the Mughal era in favor of Persian styles such as Wasir and Diwan. Pradhan is also commonly employed as a high-caste surname in the Newāh/Newār (Newar: नेवा) community of Nepal and is also currently used by the Kshatriya and Kayastha people of northern and western India. It is a surname used by Khandayat and Bhanayat (or Kshatriya) castes of eastern Indian state of Orissa. "Khanda" means sword and "Ayata" means control, hence "Khandayat" means "the master of sword" and same as Bhanayat which means the worshiper and having a control of Bow and Arrow, a powerful and most honored warrior castes. Examples[edit] Pradhan Mantri: Prime Minister (Mantri is the root of Mandarin). Pradhan Senadhipati: Chief of Staff ("Senadhipati" is an old Sanskrit style for a military leader, also used in Nepal for Commander-in-Chief). Pradhan Senapati: Grand General (also translated as Chief of 3 Staff). Pradhan was the title of a Minister who sat on the Council of 8 (Ashta Pradhan) in the early Maratha Empire prior to Peshwa administration. -

Political, trade and dynastic relations with both neighbours – NIndia and Tibet, have been intense for hundreds of years. The most important of the smaller states existing in the current territorial borders of Nepal is that of the Kathmandu Valley. This valley has been one of the most important points on the main trade route between India and Tibet. Until the late 18t century, the wealth of the Kathmandu Valley reflected in the golden roofs of numerous temples and the monastic structures adorned by artistic bronze and stone sculptures, woodcarving and paintings was mainly gained from commerce. Being the point of intersection of significant trans-Himalaya trade routes, the Kathmandu Valley was a centre for cultural exchange and a place often frequented by Hindu and Buddhist teachers, scientists, poets, architects and sculptors.1) The Kathmandu Valley with its main cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhak- tapur is situated in the northeast of Nepal at an average height of 1350 metres above sea level. Today it is still the administrative, cultural and historical centre of Nepal. Students and acquaintances of Baral will definitely find a great deal to appreciate in his autobiography, and for other people, it is a sometimes exhausting but ultimately rewarding read. Abha Lal Swarthmore College Bal Gopal Shrestha. 2015. The Newars of Sikkim: Reinventing Language, Culture, and Identity in the Diaspora. Kathmandu: Vajra Books. This ethnographical work is by far the most comprehensive account of the Newars in the diaspora. Based on the fieldwork among the Newars in Sikkim, it argues that power politics compels the subjects to expand the networks of relation and power to adjust in the alien culture. Then they seek to connect to their home tradition and language. Shrestha has published widely on the Nepali religious rituals, Hinduism, Buddhism, ethnic nationalism, and the Maoist movement. His previous book The Sacred Town of Sankhu: The Anthropology of Newar Ritual, Religion and Sankhu in Nepal (2012) was an ethnographic account of the Newars in their homeland. In this book, Shrestha studies the restructuring of the ethnic identity in the diaspora. He considers ritual practice – for the Newars, the guñhãs (especially the traditional funeral association, si: guthi:) – as a marker of such identity. Based on the finding that this practice has been abandoned by the Newars in Sikkim, he raises the following questions: How do ritual traditions function in a new historical and social context? How are rituals invented under altered circumstances? What is identity constructed through transnational linkages over long distances? On the theoretical level, Shrestha attempts to satisfy nine major features of Diaspora proposed in Robin Cohen’s Global Diaspora: An Introduction (1997: 180) by taking the legendary Laxmi Das Kasaju, who left Nepal (feature a) to save his life after the rise of Jangabahadur Rana in 1846. -
