Tis report reviews the European, National, and Regional catalogues of protected species, focusing specifcally on the Orchidaceae family to determine which species seem to be well-protected and where they are protected. Moreover, this examination highlights which species appear to be underprotected and therefore need to be included in some catalogues of protection or be catalogued under some category of protection. Te national and regional catalogues that should be implemented are shown, as well as what species should be included within them. Tis report should be a helpful guideline for environmental policies about orchids conservation in Spain, at least at the regional and national level. Around 76% of the Spanish orchid fora are listed with any fgure of protection or included in any red list, either nationally (about 12-17%) or regionally (72%). -

DELFORGE, P. - The Dactylorhiza of Occitania: status and nomenclature. The Dactylorhiza of Occitania was described in 1995 from the department of Hérault (Southern France) as Dactylorhiza occitanica.As it seems better to consider it as a variety of D. elata, D. elata var. ambigua (MARTRIN-DONOS) SOÓ 1962, based on Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS 1864, described from department of Tarn, bordering Hérault, was used to name it. Unfortunately Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS 1864 is a nom. illegit., non Orchis ambigua DEGLAND ex LE GALL 1852, and so D. elata var. ambigua (MARTRIN-DONOS) SOÓ is illegitimate too. No possibility seems avail- able to use the epithet ambigua at the varietal rank in accordance with article 58.1 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Furthermore, Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS nom. illegit. does not fit exactly the Dactylorhiza of Occitanie. As a result, the combination D. elata var. occitanica is made. Orchidoflora has been specifically monitored. The inventory, carried out after the forest is cut into homogeneous areas, is based on random and repeated surveys in time and space during the springs and autumns from 2017 to 2019. This diagnosis revealed the presence of 5 orchids belonging to 3 geners (3 have been reported for the first time in this territory) : Ophrys lutea (Cav.). Gouan, Ophrys speculum Link. subsp. speculum, Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. Subsp. tenthredinifera , Anacamptis papilionacea (L.) R.M. Bateman, Pridgeon and M.W. Chase and Dactylorhiza elata (Poir.). The latter is an endemic taxon, rare and is listed on the red list of IUCN as a near-threatened species. On the other hand, (Anacamptis papilionacea) is a rather rare taxon in the Tell, endemic and protected in Algeria and Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. Subsp. -

Based on natural selection, mutation and genetic drift, speciation occurs simultaneously in organisms linking them in complexes webs called ecosystems. Clarify what a species is, it is the first step to understand the biology of orchids and start protection actions especially in a fast changing world due to human impact such as habitats fragmentation and climate changes. I use the biological species concept (BSC) to investigate the presence and eventually the strength of mechanisms that limit the gene flow between close related taxa. -

Coeloglossum), Gymnadenia (incl. Nigritella) and Pseudorchis were examined by light microscope and SEM. Qualitative and quantitative characters were analyzed. In Dactylorhiza, the seeds are fusiform, but some populations of D. viridis show clavate seeds. According to the ornamentation of the periclinal walls, 3 types of seeds are recognized in this genus. The considerable variation in the seed coat ornamentation pattern in the taxa belonging to majalis, maculata, and praetermissa groups of the genus Dactylorhiza is congruent with the genetic processes that occurred during the history of this genus. Gymnadenia shows clavate seeds with stout and straight to slightly curved anticlinal walls, although these are straight to wavy in some taxa considered previously as Nigritella. These taxa also show low values of seed length. Pseudorchis has fusiform seeds without ornamentation in the periclinal walls and fine anticlinal walls. -
7Th International Orchid Conservation Congress
7TH INTERNATIONAL ORCHID CONSERVATION CONGRESS Jodrell Laboratory Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 28 May – 1 June 2019 Welcome to Kew! The International Orchid Conservation Congress (IOCC) series started in Western Australia in 2001, and subsequent meetings were held in Florida, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, La Réunion and Hong Kong. At the meeting in Hong Kong, it was decided that IOCCVII should be held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The title for IOCCVII is “Orchid Conservation: the Next Generation”, and we hope that the focus will be on the importance of involving the next generation of orchid conservation biologists and on the use of next-generation techniques. We are delighted to welcome more than 150 delegates from around the world to share their experiences of orchid conservation with each other. Orchids are among the most highly threatened groups of plants, with threats to orchids including habitat destruction, legal and illegal trade and climate change. As a result, our mission to conserve orchids is of increasing importance – if we don’t act, then we may be the last generation to see some groups of orchids, notably slipper orchids, in the wild. We are grateful to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for the use of the venue and for logistical support. The Lennox Boyd Trust, the Linnean Society of London and Orchid Conservation International and friends and family of the late Amy Morris provided financial support which has allowed us to provide bursaries for orchid specialists from Developing Countries so that they can attend the congress. We have an exciting and busy programme – with many talks and posters and other events including a demonstration of orchid propagation, a “World Café” session on conservation planning (arranged with the Conservation Planning Specialist Group) and a meeting of the Orchid Specialist Group.
