  • A Phylogenomic Analysis of the Floral Transcriptomes of Sexually Deceptive and Rewarding European Orchids, Ophrys and Gymnadenia
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2019 A phylogenomic analysis of the floral transcriptomes of sexually deceptive and rewarding European orchids, Ophrys and Gymnadenia Pineiro Fernandez, Laura ; Byers, Kelsey J R P ; Cai, Jing ; Sedeek, Khalid E M ; Kellenberger, Roman T ; Russo, Alessia ; Qi, Weihong ; Aquino Fournier, Catharine ; Schlüter, Philipp M Abstract: The orchids (Orchidaceae) constitute one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants. They have evolved a great variety of adaptations to achieve pollination by a diverse group of pollinators. Many orchids reward their pollinators, typically with nectar, but the family is also well- known for employing deceptive pollination strategies in which there is no reward for the pollinator, in the most extreme case by mimicking sexual signals of pollinators. In the European flora, two examples of these different pollination strategies are the sexually deceptive genus Ophrys and the rewarding genus Gymnadenia, which differ in their level of pollinator specialization; Ophrys is typically pollinated by pseudo-copulation of males of a single insect species, whilst Gymnadenia attracts a broad range of floral visitors. Here, we present and describe the annotated floral transcriptome of Ophrys iricolor, an Andrena- pollinated representative of the genus Ophrys that is widespread throughout the Aegean. Furthermore, we present additional floral transcriptomes of both sexually deceptive and rewarding orchids, specifi- cally the deceptive Ophrys insectifera, Ophrys aymoninii, and an updated floral transcriptome of Ophrys sphegodes, as well as the floral transcriptomes of the rewarding orchids Gymnadenia conopsea, Gym- nadenia densiflora, Gymnadenia odoratissima, and Gymnadenia rhellicani (syn.

Tis is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Tis report reviews the European, National, and Regional catalogues of protected species, focusing specifcally on the Orchidaceae family to determine which species seem to be well-protected and where they are protected. Moreover, this examination highlights which species appear to be underprotected and therefore need to be included in some catalogues of protection or be catalogued under some category of protection. Te national and regional catalogues that should be implemented are shown, as well as what species should be included within them. Tis report should be a helpful guideline for environmental policies about orchids conservation in Spain, at least at the regional and national level. Around 76% of the Spanish orchid fora are listed with any fgure of protection or included in any red list, either nationally (about 12-17%) or regionally (72%).

Gulf Coast Orchid Society Newsletter June 9, 2013 Our June meeting will be held Sunday, June 9, at 2:00 at the Jeff Davis Community College located at the corner of Runnymeade Rd and Debuys; just north of Pass Rd. We will meet in the main cafeteria and then move to the smaller meeting room for the program. The room that we normally use will be closed due to another meeting. PLEASE DO NOT GO INTO THE REGULAR MEETING ROOM. The Orchid’s 101 meeting led by Glen Ladnier will precede the meeting at 1:30 in the smaller meeting room. This month’s topic will be “It’s all in the roots!” PROGRAM: Glen will also do our main program on Native Orchids of South Mississippi. This will be part power point presentation and part live orchids that Glen will bring in. Glen has been working with native orchids for several years. He is currently working with Crosby Arboretum in their efforts to create a native orchid garden. We will also have several plants to sell at the meeting; some of the great plants Walter Taylor donated for the May auction, some plants donated by Jo Ann Vaz and many blooming Phals and Dendrobium purchased earlier in the year. All plants will be prepriced; you can purchase these plants from the time they get to the meeting (around 1:00 PM) until 1:20 and during the break of the regular meeting. Sales will stop just before the Orchids 101 class starts. They will be covered so no shopping or setting plants aside.

  • Le Dactylorhiza D'occitanie
Orchid24 001-070 18.09.18 10:55 Page 14 www.orchidelforge.eu Natural. belges 92 (Orchid. 24) (2011): 14-24 Le Dactylorhiza d’Occitanie: statut et nomenclature par Pierre DELFORGE (*) Abstract. DELFORGE, P. - The Dactylorhiza of Occitania: status and nomenclature. The Dactylorhiza of Occitania was described in 1995 from the department of Hérault (Southern France) as Dactylorhiza occitanica. As it seems better to consider it as a variety of D. elata, D. elata var. ambigua (MARTRIN-DONOS) SOÓ 1962, based on Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS 1864, described from department of Tarn, bordering Hérault, was used to name it. Unfortunately Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS 1864 is a nom. illegit., non Orchis ambigua DEGLAND ex LE GALL 1852, and so D. elata var. ambigua (MARTRIN-DONOS) SOÓ is illegitimate too. No possibility seems avail- able to use the epithet ambigua at the varietal rank in accordance with article 58.1 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Furthermore, Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS nom. illegit. does not fit exactly the Dactylorhiza of Occitanie. As a result, the combination D. elata var. occitanica is made. Key-Words: Orchidaceae, Dactyloriza praetermissa species group, Dactylorhiza elata, Orchis ambigua, Dactylorhiza elata var. ambigua, Dactylorhiza occitanica, Dactylorhiza elata var. occitan- ica comb. nov. Flora of France; nomenclature.
