Robert Adam's Revolution In Architecture Abstract ABSTRACT ROBERT ADAM’S REVOLUTION IN ARCHITECTURE Robert Adam (1728-92) was a revolutionary artist and, unusually, he possessed the insight and bravado to self-identify as one publicly. In the first fascicle of his three-volume Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam (published in installments between 1773 and 1822), he proclaimed that he had started a “revolution” in the art of architecture. Adam’s “revolution” was expansive: it comprised the introduction of avant-garde, light, and elegant architectural decoration; mastery in the design of picturesque and scenographic interiors; and a revision of Renaissance traditions, including the relegation of architectural orders, the rejection of most Palladian forms, and the embrace of the concept of taste as a foundation of architecture. In his own time, he became the second architect in European history (after Andrea Palladio 1508-80) to be associated with an eponymous style —today known as the “Adam Style,” and, in the eighteenth-century, the “Adamitic mode.” Adam further distinguished himself as one of the first professional architects in modern Britain, within an era that had only recently adopted widespread use of the term “architect.” To elevate his professional status, he freshly and sharply differentiated between the architect and builder, and undertook considerable self- promotional efforts. With his two pioneering publications (Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia of 1764 and his Works), he established himself as an erudite, scientific na tiquarian and as a connoisseur of buildings. Moreover, the architect-cum-marketer deftly nda innovatively composed his books to address a modern, critical, reading public (especially the emergent architectural connoisseur) and made robust arguments for the leading roles of domestic architecture and architectural decoration in shaping British identity. Drawing on a wide-range of sources, this project argues for a more comprehensive vision of the nature of Adam’s revolution and new consideration of his significance as an architect, writer, and public figure. It also builds on scholarship that seeks to contextualize Adam as a product of the Enlightenment, the Romantic era, and a rapidly-changing, modern Britain. I must also note that Professor Leja’s book, Looking Askance , inspired me to become an academic both because of its fascinating content and the sheer power, beauty, and clarity of the expository writing. Thanks are also due to Professor Michael Cole, Professor Dalibor Vesely, and Professor David Leatherbarrow. Particularly during my coursework at Penn, each of these scholars greatly helped me to become a stronger writer and thinker and played large roles in teaching me the craft of art history. I have fond memories of listening to their iii lectures and having conversations with them about a remarkably wide-range of topics. Working with Professor Cole on a Master’s thesis was a turning point in my academic career and gave me the confidence to develop topics that are both meaningful to me and contribute to the field. I will never forget the laughter of Professor Vesely at the moment he learned (after a twenty-minute impromptu discourse, delivered in a kind effort to guide me in a paper topic) that I had not wanted to write about “Zeus,” but rather “zoos.” Professor Leatherbarrow’s artful synthesis of architectural history, form, and theory in his lecture courses, his insatiable intellectual curiosity, and his extensive reading and knowledge of the field motivated me and shaped many of my intellectual activities and goals during my early years at Penn. While writing this thesis, I was fortunate to have participated in a Georgian Group conference in London on the Adam brothers in September 2015, organized by Dr. Geoffrey Tyack and Dr. Colin Thom. It was my delight to speak on Robert Adam’s scenographic interiors in a session that was chaired by Jeremy Musson and also featured papers by Conor Lucey and Richard Ireland on Robert’s decorative work.     2-4 GS Reeve + RS CORR NEW_baj gs 4/9/13 10:02 PM Page 9 The BRITISH ART Journal Volume XIII, No. 3 Of Druids, the Gothic, and the origins of architecture The garden designs of William Stukeley (1687–1765) Matthew M Reeve illiam Stukeley’s central place in the historiogra- phy of eighteenth-century England is hardly Winsecure.1 His published interpretations of the megalithic monuments at Avebury (1743) and Stonehenge (1740) earned him a prominent position in the history of archaeology, and his Vetusta Monumenta ensured his rep- utation as a draughtsman and antiquarian. Recent research has shown that Stukeley was a polymath, whose related interests in astrology, Newtonian natural history and theol- ogy formed part of a broader Enlightenment world view.2 Yet, in the lengthy scholarship on Stukeley, insufficient attention has been paid to his interest in another intellectu- al and aesthetic pursuit of eighteenth-century cognoscenti: garden design.3 Stukeley’s voluminous manuscripts attest to his role as an avid designer of gardens, landscapes and garden build- ings. His own homes were the subjects of his most interesting achievements, including his hermitages at Kentish Town (1760), Stamford (Barnhill, 1744 and Austin Street 1737), and Grantham (1727).4 In this, Stukeley can be located among a number of ‘gentleman gardeners’ in the first half of the eighteenth century from the middling classes and the aristocracy.5 He toured gardens regularly, and recorded many of them in his books, journals and cor- respondence. His 1724 Itinerarium Curiosum recounts his impressions of gardens, including the recent work at Blenheim Palace and the ‘ha-ha’ in particular, and his unpublished notebooks contain a number of sketches such as the gardens at Grimsthorpe, Lincs., where he was a reg- ular visitor.6 Stukeley also designed a handful of garden buildings, apparently as gifts for friends and acquaintances.

    Blackstone as Architect: Constructing the Commentaries Wilfrid Prest* On January 28, 1746, as Cumberland's forces pursued the retreating Jacobite army into Scotland, a twenty-three year old newly-minted Bachelor of Civil Law and junior fellow of All Souls College sat down to write a characteristically cheerful letter to his lawyer uncle Seymour Richmond, shortly after reaching "my new Habitation (which is at Mr Stoke's a Limner in Arundel St)."' In the light of what is becoming clear about William Blackstone's own accomplishments and interests in draftsmanship and the visual arts, his choice of London lodgings was perhaps not entirely accidental. Be that as it may, this report on what was seemingly Blackstone's first serious encounter with the common law (even though he had by now accumulated a full five years' standing at the Middle Temple), exudes a jaunty self-confidence, couched in topically martial language: "I have stormed one Book of Littleton, & opened my Trenches before ye 2d; and I can with Pleasure say I have met with no Difficulty of Consequence...."     UTTLESFORD DISTRICT COUNCIL AUDLEY END AUDLEY END TL 525383 GRADE I A house of C17 origins beside a mid C19 parterre garden, with pleasure grounds by Richard Woods, surrounded by a C18 park conceived and partly laid out by Lancelot Brown between 1762 and 1767. HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT Audley End was built between c. 1605 and 1614, on the site of the abbey of Walden, for Thomas Howard, first earl of Suffolk. His surveyor was Bernard Jannssen and in 1614 Suffolk began to lay out extensive formal gardens. Following conviction for embezzlement however he suffered great financial trouble and his property declined. Suffolk died in 1626, leaving his son Theophilus to bear the twin burdens of his debts and enormous maintenance costs. When James the third earl inherited in 1640 the situation had not improved and after the Restoration the house and some parkland were sold to Charles II in 1668. Extensive works to the house were undertaken by Christopher Wren (1632-1723) but successive monarchs showed little interest in the property which in 1701 was returned to the Howards and settled on Henry, earl of Bindon who assumed the title of sixth earl of Suffolk in 1708. The sixth earl commissioned Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) to make improvements which resulted in demolition of part of the house, after which the property passed to Charles William Howard, seventh earl who died in 1722 at the age of twenty nine. The estate was left to his younger uncle, Charles Howard, while the title passed to his elder uncle, Edward. When Edward died, Charles became the ninth earl and in 1725 he commissioned a plan for a great formal garden by the French architect Dubois.

    The Evolution of Bowood House and Estate Since 1945 Illustrated talk by the Most Hon. the Marquess of Lansdowne By Dr Robert Blackburn The 14th Joint Annual Civic Society lecture (in conjunction with the Friends of St Andrew’s) was held in St Andrew’s Church, Chippenham, 21 June 2016 by kind permission of the Vicar, the Rev. Rod Key, and in the presence of the Mayor of Chippenham , Cllr Terry Gibson , and Mrs Gibson. Lord Lansdowne was introduced by Mike Stone, Chair of the Civic Society. Bowood Park was once part of the Royal Forest of Chippenham. Today, it is part of the Historic Houses Association (the HHA), which markets itself separately, outside the National Trust and English Heritage. Lord Lansdowne said that he regarded himself as the custodian of Bowood, not just the owner. He had been in this role since 1972, when his father, the 8th Marquess, born in 1912, retired to Perthshire when he turned 60. During the 44 years since, there have been many challenges and anxieties, as well as pleasures, and the purpose of this talk was to outline some of these, offering a picture of the development of the Lord Lansdowne giving his talk at the Joint Annual Civic Bowood Estate over the decades Society Lecture. since the Second World War. Lord Lansdowne showed a map of the Bowood Estate as it was in 1900. At that time, it consisted of 12,000 acres, including most of the town of Calne. Today, in 2016, the estate’s acreage has fallen to 4,000, mostly agriculture, let for farming.

The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826.
