B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

1 CROSSING THE POND: JAZZ, RACE, AND GENDER IN INTERWAR PARIS A dissertation presented by Rachel Anne Gillett to The Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of History Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts May, 2010 2 CROSSING THE POND: JAZZ, RACE, AND GENDER IN INTERWAR PARIS by Rachel Anne Gillett Between 1920 and 1939 the nightclubs of Montmartre became a venue where different nationalities came into contact, danced, talked, and took advantage of the freedom to cross the color line that Paris and the ―color-blind‖ French audience seemed to offer. The fascination for black performers known as the tumulte noir provided the occasion for hundreds of jazz and blues performers to migrate to Paris in these years. French society was inundated with the sounds of jazz and also with images and stereotypes of jazz performers that often contained primitivist, exotic and sexualized associations. The popularity of jazz and its characterization as ―black‖ music raised the question of how the French state dealt with racial difference. It caused consternation among „non- jazz‟ black men and women throughout the Francophone Atlantic many of whom were engaged in constructing an intellectual pan-Africanist discourse with a view to achieving full citizenship and respect for French colonial subjects. This manuscript examines the tension between French ideals of equality, and „color-blindness,‟ and the actual experiences of black men and women in Paris between the wars. Although officially operating within the framework of a color-blind Republican model, France has faced acute dilemmas about how to deal with racial and ethnic differences that continue to spark debate and controversy. -

The Vertical Turn: Topographies of Metropolitan Modernism By Paul Christoph Haacke A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature with a Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Robert Alter, Chair Anton Kaes Michael Lucey Spring 2011 1 Abstract The Vertical Turn: Topographies of Metropolitan Modernism by Paul Christoph Haacke Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature with a Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Robert Alter, Chair This dissertation argues that the dominant vertical orientation of metropolitan modernist culture was put into question above all in response to World War II and the global emergence of the Cold War. While grounded in Comparative Literature and Film Studies, it also engages with interdisciplinary questions of philosophy, history, religion, economics, media studies, urban studies, art, and architecture. The first part demonstrates the growing fascination with vertical height, aspiration and transcendence in modernist aesthetics and everyday life, and the second part focuses on the critical suspicion of such transcendence in literature, film, and theory after World War II. The afterward discusses how this history helps us better understand the more horizontalist rhetoric of globalization and new media that has become dominant since then. My argument is that, in response to new developments in technology and metropolitan experience over the course of the long twentieth century, trans-Atlantic writers and artists became increasingly interested in vertical ideas of aspiration and transcendence that diverged from both romantic ideas of spiritual inspiration and realist ideas of mimetic reflection. -

Twentieth Century French Literature in Australian Universities : Teaching and Research1
TWENTIETH CENTURY FRENCH LITERATURE IN AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES : TEACHING AND RESEARCH1 COLIN NETTELBECK There was a time when a good knowledge of European literatures was integral to the culture of educated Australians. During the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, interest in French literature in particular was reflected in both private and public library collections, as well as in university teaching and research. Something of that tradition remains today: the intellectual elite continue to follow certain French writers such as Houellebecq and to remark on such phenomena as the rediscovery of Irène Némirovsky or the scandal around Jonathan Littell’s Les Bienveillantes. From time to time a French author gets invited to one of the nation’s numerous writers’ festivals (Jean Echenoz, Philippe Claudel). There is however now doubt that in the past thirty years or so, Australian reception of contemporary French literature has become less systematic, more haphazard. The aim of this study is to explore that phenomenon and the reasons behind it. Our focus will be on the university sector where teaching and research in twentieth century French literature has become so fragile that it is difficult to be optimistic about its future. As we know, in Australia, as in many places, the teaching of foreign literatures occurs in parallel with language acquisition classes, and, as we know, the old model of the ‘Department of French Language and Literature’ has almost universally given way to a ‘French Studies Program’ model, usually within a School of Languages. Contact hours have been dramatically reduced, and the content of study-programs has followed suit.
