INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND TRANSLATION STUDIES (IJELR) A QUARTERLY, INDEXED, REFEREED AND PEER REVIEWED OPEN ACCESS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL http://www.ijelr.in (Impact Factor : 5.9745 (ICI) KY PUBLICATIONS RESEARCH ARTICLE ARTICLE Vol. 5. Issue.4. 2018 (Oct-Dec) A STUDY OF POST – TRUTH SOCIETY THROUGH THE NARRATIVE OF CHRISTOPHER PRIEST’S THE PRESTIGE HARSHINIE SHRI S1, P. SUBHAPRIYA2 1IIM. A. English Literature, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women Coimbatore – 641004, Tamilnadu. 2Associate Professor in English, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women Coimbatore – 641004, Tamilnadu ABSTRACT The term ‘post – truth’ is defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotional and personal belief” (Oxford). Because of its universally pervasive relevance, post – truth was chosen as the Oxford dictionaries “Word of the Year” in 2016. This paper analyses the narrative technique of Christopher Priest’s 1995 novel The Prestige from the purview of post – truth. Using the concepts of ‘slipstream’ and ‘cognitive dissonance,’ the paper hypothesizes that the narrative of The Prestige can be used as a tool to decode the complex mechanism of how the post – truth narrative unfolds in today’s society. This hypothesis can be used to analyze the significance of communication in the digital, post – truth world of today. Key words: post – truth, slipstream, cognitive dissonance Today, people live in a world where the election of the greatest superpower – the U.S. – eludes its own citizens, the reins of the biggest democracies are possibly in the hands of capitalist powers and the swarm of news dumped on netizens can seldom be proved true.

This book is the complement and companion piece, an exploration of ways in which sci- ence fiction utilizes the stories that we tell about the mature societies and cultures that cities embody.

  • Metafiction and Narrative Worlds in Science Fiction Candidate
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of East Anglia digital repository ‘Prism, Mirror, Lens’: Metafiction and Narrative Worlds in Science Fiction Candidate: Amanda Dillon Submitted for the degree: Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Literature, Drama, and Creative Writing September 2011 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract While invented worlds are one of science fiction‟s most recognisable features, the narrative structure that creates and sustains these fictional worlds is seldom explored in science fiction criticism. This thesis investigates science fiction‟s narratological make-up and explores the narratological similarity between science fiction and the common literary technique of metafiction. To do so, a series of parallels are drawn between models of science fiction and metafiction, as well as text-world theory and modal philosophy. This thesis proposes that science fiction is inherently metafictional because of the way it foregrounds its world; that is, the science fiction world is a form of textual deixis. This thesis examines the multiple ways in which this deixis is accomplished. As such, this thesis progresses from texts that utilise a layering of proposed text worlds to a portrayal of narrative worlds using sophisticated narrative experiments and recursive structures. This thesis also argues that science fiction is particularly well-suited for metafictional exercises, and that its underlying hypothetical structure allows metafiction and science fiction to fuse into „performative metafiction‟; that is, actualised literary theory.

PIHLIGHTERS For the first time in 21 years, I'm stuck with an Editorial without anything co say. All the good bits (all the bits that are interesting to me) go in 'I Must Be Talking to My Friends' (The Metaph sicil teview). In this, my magazine about sf ano fantasy, I don't have much in general to say about these genres that I haven't said many times before. You know my line: ignore the junk; search out the good stuff; tell us what you find. I've enlisted three columnists this time -- Dave Langford from England, Mike Tolley from Adelaide, and Colin Steele from Canberra. I won't turn away anybody else who wants to join the crew. My own column can wait till next issue. Response to SF Conwentary 67 has been good. Some optimistic souls have even thrown a subscription into their letters to keep the revived beast on its feet. Maybe it's slipping. Everything in this issue was on diskette by September 1989. Come March 1990 before the issue appears. Paying work has been plentiful, but time and finance for publishing fanzines has not been. But I still have a Planned Schedule. Thanks to all for your patience. Here are the letters that fit: DAVID LAKE 7 8th Avenue, St Lucia, Queensland 4067 About your review of my The Changelings of Chaan and West of the Moon -- I agree with you that The Changelings of Chaan is the better book. But you may not know that it is actually the later book, my last book, in fact (probably in both senses of 'last').
