NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth-Century Britain A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Matthew Kane Sterenberg EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2007 2 © Copyright by Matthew Kane Sterenberg 2007 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth-Century Britain Matthew Sterenberg This dissertation, “Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth- Century Britain,” argues that a widespread phenomenon best described as “mythic thinking” emerged in the early twentieth century as way for a variety of thinkers and key cultural groups to frame and articulate their anxieties about, and their responses to, modernity. As such, can be understood in part as a response to what W.H. Auden described as “the modern problem”: a vacuum of meaning caused by the absence of inherited presuppositions and metanarratives that imposed coherence on the flow of experience. At the same time, the dissertation contends that— paradoxically—mythic thinkers’ response to, and critique of, modernity was itself a modern project insofar as it took place within, and depended upon, fundamental institutions, features, and tenets of modernity. Mythic thinking was defined by the belief that myths—timeless rather than time-bound explanatory narratives dealing with ultimate questions—were indispensable frameworks for interpreting experience, and essential tools for coping with and criticizing modernity. Throughout the period 1900 to 1980, it took the form of works of literature, art, philosophy, and theology designed to show that ancient myths had revelatory power for modern life, and that modernity sometimes required creation of new mythic narratives. -

SERIOUS SHENANIGANS THE NEW SPACE OPERA AND SOCIAL COMMENTARY: AN ANALYSIS OF IAIN M. BANKS’S SURFACE DETAIL AND THE HYDROGEN SONATA AND ANN LECKIE’S IMPERIAL RADCH TRILOGY. Monica Janssen August 2018 1 Abstract This thesis contributes to research on the genre of space opera. Space opera is generally considered the least sophisticated form of science fiction, and remains underrepresented in scholarly research. Yet, a considerable part of the greatest science fiction published over the past three decades has been space opera. Specifically, it has been New Space Opera (NSO), a renewed, innovative form of space opera that arose during the second half of the 1980s. The NSO uses space opera’s core elements of adventure and conflict to both entertain and address serious contemporary social, political, and economic issues. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the NSO is an exceptionally suitable form to provide social commentary. I will show that the NSO is an innovation of the Classic Space Opera (CSO) in terms of both form and content, that the critical and satirical space operas written during the 1960s and 1970s aided this innovation, and that the perceived unsophisticated and clichéd nature of the Classic Space Opera (CSO) actually encouraged the development of the NSO. Furthermore, through a close-reading analysis of US-American author Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy (2013-2015) and Scottish author Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels Surface Detail (2010) and The Hydrogen Sonata (2012), which are typical examples of NSO novels, I will analyze how the narrative strategies of estrangement, defamiliarization, affect, and the novum, which are integral to the speculative and imaginative nature of space opera, are employed to provide social commentary on topics such as the oppression and dehumanization of cultural others, and on issues of identity and subjectivity formation. -

Out of the Unknown Created by Irene Shubik BBC Television’s Out of the Unknown, the classic anthology science fiction series – broadcast between 1965 and 1971 – was daring, ambitious and inventive, drawing from writers of the calibre of John Wyndham, Isaac Asimov, J G Ballard, J G Priestley, Ray Bradbury, E M Forster and Troy Kennedy Martin. On 27 October 2014, as part of Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, the BFI will release a comprehensive 7-disc DVD box set that brings together all 20 surviving episodes from the four original series, all digitally remastered from the best available materials. Created by Irene Shubik (The Wednesday Play, Rumpole of the Bailey), Out of the Unknown employed the cream of British talent to bring a variety of often chilling, sometimes darkly comic, and always thought-provoking science fiction tales to the small screen. Dramatists such as J B Priestley and Leon Griffiths, directors such as Philip Saville and Rudolph Cartier, visionary designers such as Ridley Scott, and actors of the calibre of Yvonne Mitchell, George Cole, Milo O’Shea and David Hemmings were brought together to produce one of the most prestigious science fiction series ever made. When plans to release this classic TV series for the very first time were originally announced, the BFI was inundated with letters and e-mails from private collectors and die-hard fans, all of whom generously offered their invaluable help. Collectively, they have ensured that the contents of this long-overdue release are as thorough and exciting as possible. The impressive range of extra features (produced by ‘professional fans’ in collaboration with the BFI) includes 4 episode reconstructions, an incomplete episode, 11 audio commentaries, extensive stills galleries, an interview with director James Cellan Jones, and a newly-created 42-minute documentary featuring interviews with original cast and crew members as well as rarely-seen clips from lost episodes. -
