    The Miami Herald January 8, 2000 Saturday DON MARTIN DIES, MADDEST OF MAD MAGAZINE CARTOONISTS BY DANIEL de VISE AND JASMINE KRIPALANI Don Martin was the man who put the Mad in Mad magazine. He drew edgy cartoons about hapless goofs with anvil jaws and hinged feet who usually met violent fates, sometimes with a nerve-shredding SHTOINK! His absurdist vignettes inspired two or three generations of rebellious teenage boys to hoard dog-eared Mads in closets and beneath beds. He was their secret. Martin died Thursday at Baptist Hospital after battling cancer at his South Dade home. He was 68. Colleagues considered him a genius in the same rank as Robert Crumb (Keep on Truckin') and Gary Larson (The Far Side). But adults seldom saw his work. And Don Martin's slack-jawed goofballs weren't about to pop up on calendars or mugs. The son of a New Jersey school supply salesman, Martin joined the fledgling Mad magazine in 1956 and stayed with the irreverent publication for 31 years. Editors billed him as "Mad's Maddest Cartoonist." "He was a hard-edged Charles Schulz," said Nick Meglin, co-editor of Mad. "It's no surprise that Snoopy got to the moon. And it's no surprise that Don Martin characters would wind up on the wall in some coffeehouse in San Francisco." COUNTERCULTURE HERO If Peanuts was the cartoon of mainstream America - embraced even by Apollo astronauts - then Martin's crazy-haired, oval-nosed boobs were heroes of the counterculture. Gilbert Shelton, an underground cartoonist who penned the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, said Martin was the reason he first picked up the pencil.

Monica Janssen August 2018 1 Abstract This thesis contributes to research on the genre of space opera. Space opera is generally considered the least sophisticated form of science fiction, and remains underrepresented in scholarly research. Yet, a considerable part of the greatest science fiction published over the past three decades has been space opera. Specifically, it has been New Space Opera (NSO), a renewed, innovative form of space opera that arose during the second half of the 1980s. The NSO uses space opera’s core elements of adventure and conflict to both entertain and address serious contemporary social, political, and economic issues. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the NSO is an exceptionally suitable form to provide social commentary. I will show that the NSO is an innovation of the Classic Space Opera (CSO) in terms of both form and content, that the critical and satirical space operas written during the 1960s and 1970s aided this innovation, and that the perceived unsophisticated and clichéd nature of the Classic Space Opera (CSO) actually encouraged the development of the NSO. Furthermore, through a close-reading analysis of US-American author Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy (2013-2015) and Scottish author Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels Surface Detail (2010) and The Hydrogen Sonata (2012), which are typical examples of NSO novels, I will analyze how the narrative strategies of estrangement, defamiliarization, affect, and the novum, which are integral to the speculative and imaginative nature of space opera, are employed to provide social commentary on topics such as the oppression and dehumanization of cultural others, and on issues of identity and subjectivity formation.

Coetzee by Michael John Marais submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of D.Litt. et Phil. in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Rand Afrikaans University Promoter: Professor Rory Ryan October 1997 Abstract This study explores the tension between politics and ethics in selected novels by J.M Coetzee. It contends that, in this writer's fiction, ethics is conceived of in Levinasian terms as a relation of responsibility for the other which is grounded in an acknowledgement of the other's radical difference to the same. The thesis examines Coetzee's self-reflexive investigation of the problem for novelistic representation posed by this conception of ethics. In order to contextualise this examination, the first chapter of the study establishes that the form and medium of the novel install a relation of correlation between same and other, and that the novel-as-genre therefore routinely forecloses on, rather than maintains a relation of difference to, alterity. Chapter One also traces the various strategies through which Coetzee's novels attempt not only to prevent the medium and form of the novel-as-genre from reducing the other to an object and thereby violating it, but also to impart a sense of that which inevitably exceeds, and so transcends, this genre's representational protocols. By means of such strategies of excession, the study contends, Coetzee's texts endeavour to inscribe a responsible relation to the other. The four remaining chapters of the thesis trace Coetzee's installation of strategies of excession, and therefore of an ethical aesthetic, in Dusklands, Life and Times of Michael K, Foe, Age of Iron and The Master of Petersburg.
