THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

A CYCLOPEDIA OF REPRODUCTIONS ON SALE

PART I

GENERAL INFORMATION

NEW YORK 1939

NOTE

The following pages, which compose Part I of A Cy clopedia of Reproductio?ts on Sale, give the nature, size, and price of reproductions sold at the Museum, arranged alphabetically according to type of reproduction. Most of the original objects are in the Museum collections and most of the reproductions are made by the Museum, but a few objects from other places and reproductions by other publishers are listed here. As practically all the objects in the Museum collections except casts and prints have been photographed by the Museum (see pp. 25 ff.), no complete catalogue of photo graphs is published. The most satisfactory method of selection is to consult the record photographs on file at the Information Desk of the Museum. When this is im possible, the following publications are suggested as help ful guides: Photographs: American and European Paint ings, XIV to XX Century, and American and European Sculpture, XVIII to XX Century (Part II of A Cyclo pedia of Reproductions on Sale), a complete list in these two fields; Postcards (Part III of A Cyclopedia of Repro ductions on Sale), which lists a number of important ob jects in the collections; Photographs and Publications Illustrating History and Daily Life from Ancient Times to the XIX Century Including Photographs of Costume Dolls (Part IV of A Cyclopedia of Reproductions on Sale), a suggestive list of material selected primarily fot its documentary value; the Handbook of the Classical Collection ($1.00), which discusses the life and art of Greece and Rome; the Handbook of the Pierpont Mor- NOTE ganWing ($2.50), which describes and illustrates Euro pean furniture, woodwork, tapestries, metalwork, enamels, ivories, and other forms of decorative art from the fourth through the eighteenth century, with special emphasis on French work; the Handbook of Mohammedan Dec orative Arts ($2.00), which takes up historically the miniature painting, calligraphy, bookbinding, sculpture, ivory and intarsia work, woodwork, metalwork, glass, ceramics, and textiles of the Near East, and is profusely illustrated in halftone and color; and the Handbook of The American Wing ($1.50), which illustrates and de scribes American woodwork and furnishings from the seventeenth century to the early nineteenth. In ordering by mail any of these publications (except the first three, which are sent free on request) ten cents for postage should be added to the price given in parentheses. A complete list of Museum publications is given in the folder Publications on Sale, which will be sent on re quest. When ordering reproductions by mail, please address the Secretary of the Museum and make remittance by post-office order or check on New York, drawn to the order of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or, from foreign countries, by international money order. Mailing charges should be added as noted herein. It is the custom of the Museum not to ship orders in advance of payment.
