Saint Damien & Mother Marianne Cope with Jason Jones Film Producer, Author, Activist, and Human Rights Worker February 4 ~ 11, 2020 Pilgrimage to Hawaiiin the footsteps of Saint Damien & Mother Marianne Cope With Jason Jones film producer, author, activist, and human rights worker February 4 ~ 11, 2020 February 4, 2020: Today our pilgrimage begins as we take a flight from main land USA for Hawaii. Upon arrival, we meet our local Tour Manager and transfer to the hotel for check-in followed by lei- sure time. Tonight, we gather together for our welcome dinner. Overnight Honolulu February 5: Today we will visit the magnificent Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace where our pilgrimage chaplain will celebrate Mass. It was completed in 1843 and is known as the oldest contin- uously functioning Cathedral in the United States. It was here that St. Damien was ordained a priest in 1864. Next, we visit St. Patrick’s Church to view a collection of artifacts belonging to St. Damien including his carved meerschaum pipe, guava walking stick, vestments, chalice, and his prayer kneeler. We return to our hotel and enjoy an afternoon of leisure. Tonight, we will get a real taste of Hawaii Beaches of Honolulu at the THE ROYAL HAWAIIAN AHAINA LUAU right on Waikiki Beach. Overnight Honolulu February 6: This morning following breakfast, we visit Pearl Harbor to participate in a 3-hour tour of the Arizona Memorial. We pay homage to the 2, 403 Americans who lost their lives and 1, 178 who were wounded. Eighteen ships were sunk or run aground, including five battleships. Our chaplain will celebrate Mass at the Pearl Harbor Catholic Chapel on the American Naval Base. This afternoon there will be some Leisure time. Overnight Honolulu February 7: Following breakfast, we depart for the airport for a short flight to Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai to honor St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. Opportunity for Mass at St. Philo- mena Church. We will also visit the gravesites of St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. Following lunch, we continue to St. Elizabeth’s Chapel and Convent for a visit before returning by plane to Honolulu. Overnight Honolulu February 8: Today after breakfast, we tour the island! We head south to Diamond Head Crater and St. Patrick’s Church view the Amelia Earhart monument. We stop at the Hanauma Bay lookout, a pristine marine eco- system with colorful living coral reefs, and marine life. We continue to the famous Halona Blowhole lookout, the location of “From Here to Eternity”. Sea turtles are often spotted in these emerald green waters. Our next stop is the Pali Lookout, called by Mark Twain the “most beautiful view on Earth”. Finally, we arrive at the Valley of the Temples and enter the Byodo-in Temple, a photographer’s dream! It is a smaller-scale replica of the over 950- year old Byodo-in Temple in Japan. As we depart, we pass the Chinaman’s Hat, a picturesque islet located in Kaneohe Bay. We celebrate Mass at St. Peter and Paul Church in Waimea. We continue to Waimea Valley, the location of over 5,000 flowering plants USS Arizona Memorial and the most scenic waterfall on the island. Our last stop is the Dole Planation where we marvel at the many colorful varieties of pineapple species from all over Hawaii. Overnight Honolulu February 9: Today we take an excursion to the other side of the Island to visit the Benedictine Mon- astery in Waiula, Hawaii. At the monastery we will have time for a retreat with prayer and Mass. Overnight Honolulu February 10: Today is a day at leisure to relax on the beach, possibly take a surf lesson, play golf, shop or further explore the island. We will also have the opportunity to attend Mass at St. Augustine by the Sea. Farewell dinner at the renown Eating House 1849 by Roy Yamaguchi! We celebrate our pilgrim- age and bid farewell to Hawaii. Overnight Honolulu Nu'uanu Pali February 11: After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our return flight home.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS RESEARCH DIVISION Kalawao County Moloka‘i, Hawaiÿi The land inclines sharply to the lofty mountains and the nearly mile-high summit of Mount Kamakou, then ends abruptly with emerald-green cliffs, which plunge into a lurid aquamarine sea dotted with tiny deserted islets. These breathtaking 3,250-foot sea cliffs, the highest in the world, stretch 14 majestic miles … laced by waterfalls and creased by five pristine valleys … once occupied by early Hawaiians who built stone terraces and used waterfalls to irrigate taro patches. Long after the sea cliffs formed, a tiny volcano erupted out of the sea at their feet and spread lava into a flat, leaf-like peninsula. (Foster, 2004, p. 460). Kalaupapa Peninsula. Yet in the course of history, because of this isolation, it also became known as the ‘äina of kaumaha nohoi (deep sorrow) and pilikia (misery, hardship, and suffering), ka luakupapaÿu kanu ola (the grave of living corpses or a living tomb), ‘aÿole känäwai ma këia wahi (a place where there is no law), and a “prison fortified by nature” (Inglis, 2004; Frazier, 1987; Stevenson, 1991).     January 23 St. Marianne Cope 1838–1918 ∞ Germany When Marianne Cope was only two years old, her family immigrated to the United States from Germany. Ever since she was young, Marianne knew that God wanted her to be a nun, and she joined the Franciscan sisters. Eventually, she was elected the mother superior and ran the local hospital. Some people criticized her for receiving “outcasts” in the hospital, but Sr. Marianne rejected no one who needed help. God used her time with the sick to prepare her for an important mission He had planned for her. In 1883, the Hawaiian government sent a letter to Sr. Marianne, pleading that she come to Hawaii and take care of the lepers on the islands. At that time, there was no cure for the terrible disease of leprosy that damaged the flesh. The Hawaiian government had begged many other religious communities to send help, but none had answered the call. But Sr. Marianne’s heart leapt at the opportunity to serve the sick in Hawaii in Christ’s name. Immediately, she wrote back that it would be her greatest delight to serve the abandoned lepers. Sr. Marianne and six of her nuns arrived in Honolulu and took charge of the hospital there. They tidied it up and made it a pleasant place to stay. They served the patients with tenderness and love. There were many young girls who had nobody to take care of them because their parents were sick with leprosy; so Sr. Marianne and her nuns started a home for the girls near the hospital.

Monday, September 14th –Day 2 This morning after breakfast (included daily) , we will visit the magnificent Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace to celebrate Mass. It was completed in 1843, and is renown as the oldest continuously functioning Cathedral in the USA! Saint Damien was ordained a priest in this cathedral, in 1864, two months after his arrival in Honolulu. After stopping in the Cathedral bookstore, we continue to St. Patricks. Here we view a collection of artifacts belonging to Saint Damien including his carved meerschaum pipe, guava walking stick, vestments, chalice, and his pre dieu (prayer kneeler).
