A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Continuation from last week’s letter: St. Katharine Drexel, founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Katharine was the daughter of Francis Anthony Drexel, a very wealthy banker in Philadelphia and business partner of financier JP Morgan. Her uncle, Anthony Joseph founded the Drexel University. Katharine lived a sheltered life and received her education at home. However, having traveled throughout the US, she became aware of the difficult plight of Native Americans and African Americans. Katharine supported several schools, including one that was on a reservation in South Dakota. During her trip to Europe in 1887, she met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to recommend a Missionary Order that could undertake the works of the institutions she was financially supporting. The Pope suggested that she could be that missionary herself. Katharine took it as a sign from God and made her boldest move by becoming a nun. Katharine was an heir to a large fortune which she gave up upon entering the convent. Her decision shocked the elite social circle of Philly. News headline that day said: “Miss Drexel Enters a Catholic Convent—Gives Up Seven Million." Katharine Drexel founded the Religious Order that at present continues to give hope by sharing the Gospel message to the poor, especially among Native Americans and African Americans ,and by challenging all forms of racism and injustice. Katharine Drexel died in Bensalem, PA, in 1955. She was canonized on October 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. St. Mother Théodore Guérin, founder of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Guerin is particularly known for her advancement of education and for founding numerous schools including Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Indiana. She died in Indiana in 1856 and was canonized October 15, 2006. St Damien de Veuster, aka Damien of Molokai served the lepers in the island of Molokai in Hawaii. He became leper himself and died at age 49 on the island in 1889. He was canonized October 11, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI. The first native American Saint, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, also known as the Lily of the Mohawks, suffered a great deal being shunned by her tribe for converting to Christianity. Kateri died in Quebec in 1680. She was canonized on October 21, 2012. St. Marianne Cope was a member of the Religious of the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, New York. Like St. Damien, Sister Marianne ministered to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii. But unlike St. Damien, she was not infected with leprosy despite her close contact with them; this fact has been considered miraculous. She died in Hawaii in 1918 and was canonized at the same time with St. Kateri. Saints Seton, Drexel and Tekakwitha are the three American saints who were born within the geographical territory of the modern United States. The others were born in other nations, but ministered in geographical territory that is now USA. The North American Martyrs and St. Guerin were all born in France. St John Neumann was born in Bohemia. Father Damien was born in Belgium. Mother Cabrini was born in Italy. And Mother Cope was born in Germany. The Philippine born St. Pedro Calungsod who was canonized with Sts. Tekakwitha and Cope, is being considered an American Saint since he ministered and was martyred in what is now the United States territory of Guam in 1672. We thank the Lord for American Saints. May they intercede for us and the USA. Amen. Sincerely Yours In Christ, Fr. Burt Absalon, Pastor 2 | St. Mary Parish · Woodstock, Illinois 555 Colman Center Drive P.O. It is a simple glance directed to Heaven. It is a cry of gratude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy.” –St. Therese Lisieux This connues to be a difficult year for so many as our world has been upended by a global pandemic. Even as we experience hardships, sadness and the stress of our sacrifices, we sll recognize that God walks with us, seeks to heal our ills and loves us at all mes, good and bad. For that reason, despite being tried by so many challenges this year, we give thanks to God. Spending me in prayer allows us the opportunity to pause and recall the ways we see God’s goodness, mercy and love. During this season of Thanksgiving, I invite you to submit your prayer intenons online or through the mail so that I can offer it up to the Lord in my prayers throughout the year, as well as during Masses offered at the Chapel of the Immaculate Concepon in the Diocesan Administraon Building.
