Sperling et al. surveyed the feeding strategies of various polychaetes found in low-oxygen regions and found that carnivorous organisms decrease in abundance with decreasing oxygen levels. The findings help to explain the origin of animal food webs in low-oxygen Precambrian oceans, and may help to predict future changes in ocean ecology associated with the expansion of low-oxygen regions.
