The International Maritime Lecturers' Association's International Maritime English Conference is a no-border forum: a round table for discussions on sea- related communication problems concerning a universally accepted language, that of Maritime English. All rights reserved. 1articles.indd 117 2017. 5. 29. 오후 5:09 118 The Review of Korean Studies Introduction This paper aims to study the musical Tsubame つばぬ (2002),1 performed by Japanese Warabi-za (theater company), and its recreation in changgeuk (Korean opera based on traditional pansori)2 titled Jebi 春燕 (2004),3 performed by National Changgeuk Company of Korea, based on Joseon tongsinsa using a cross-cultural methodology. These performances were promoted internationally with a story of Joseon tongsinsa 朝鮮通信使 (Korean delegation),4 a diplomatic delegation that also took a role on cultural exchange between Joseon and Japan.5 One of their missions was to repatriate Joseon war prisoners during which they had to confront the tragic reality of war. FRONT COVER PICTURE ‘Goshiki-yae-chiri-tsubaki’ was seen on several occasions on visits during the 2010 International Camellia Society Congress in Japan. The name means, literally “Five colours, double, petals scattering”. The five colours are all seen on one tree, with branches bearing white, deep pink, pale pink, striped pink on a white background, and striped with white on a pink background, making a glorious display. The most striking trees are ancient, estimated to be 400 – 500 years old. Its history is not clear, but there is a legend that the plant of the same cultivar at Jizoin Temple in camellia japonica camellia seeds filtered camellia oil Kyoto was brought in from Korea during the war between Japan and Korea in 1593. This unique cultivar the pride of the people of Kyoto and Nara.

Summary The nominated documents, “Documents on Joseon Tongsinsa/Chosen Tsushinshi (Korean Embassies): The History of Peace Building and Cultural Exchanges between Korea and Japan from the 17th to 19th Century” comprises materials related to 12 diplomatic missions dispatched from Korea to Japan between 1607 and 1811 at the request of Japan’s Shogunate government. The missions contributed to restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries, which had been severed due to the invasion of Korea ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Japan’s ruler) in the late 16th century, and to maintaining peaceful relations. The nominated documents, which have been in custody in both countries, comprise diplomatic documents, travel records, and cultural exchange records, all of which testify to the importance of the missions in promoting reconciliation, mutual understanding, and interactions in the diplomatic, cultural, and industrial spheres. These cross-cultural exchanges were based on mutual respect and the principle of “sincerity and friendship.” The nominated documents exhibit wisdom in maintaining peaceful relations between two nations that had been at war.     Comparative Connections A Triannual E-Journal on East Asian Bilateral Relations Japan-Korea Relations: A Litigious Time of the Year David Kang, University of Southern California Jiun Bang, University of Southern California The overarching theme for the end of the year was litigation. The trial of Kato Tatsuya (former Seoul bureau chief for Sankei Shimbun) led to his acquittal for criminal libel. The trial of Park Yu-ha, a professor at Sejong University charged with defamation for her 2013 book Comfort Women of the Empire began in December, the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) and its affiliates faced three separate lawsuits in Japan and South Korea, and a Korean was arrested and later indicted for his role in placing a bomb at Yasukuni Shrine. There were also competing interpretations of the international status of North Korean refugees in the case of contingencies. The much-awaited November Park-Abe summit was quickly tested by incidents that could easily strain relations. To the credit of Seoul and Tokyo, neither government let a single issue damage the relationship. In fact, the two ended up reaching an accord on “comfort women/sex slaves” at yearend. Despite immediate praise from the US, there was considerable frustration from both publics over the agreement. Sticky lawsuits Recall that the first mention of Sankei Shimbun’s former Seoul bureau chief, Kato Tatsuya, was back in the summer of 2014, when he was facing a defamation suit for an article that mentioned rumors of President Park Geun-hye engaging in a clandestine meeting during the seven-hour period in which she was unaccounted for on the day of the tragic sinking of the Sewol ferry in April 2014.
