Inset: �hi���������eo Matsu�oto ‘Jikkô’(literally meaning ‘the sunlight’) is a 300 year old camellia just inside the entrance to the garden of Reikanji Temple in Kyoto City. It is thought to be the original plant of this variety and was cherished by the retired Emperor Gomizuno’o (1596-1680) and designated as a natural treasure by Kyoto City. See page 104 for Kentaro Nakamura’s paper that includes information about experiments for the propagation of this historic camellia. FRONT COVER PICTURE ‘Goshiki-yae-chiri-tsubaki’ was seen on several occasions on visits during the 2010 International Camellia Society Congress in Japan. The name means, literally “Five colours, double, petals scattering”. The five colours are all seen on one tree, with branches bearing white, deep pink, pale pink, striped pink on a white background, and striped with white on a pink background, making a glorious display. The most striking trees are ancient, estimated to be 400 – 500 years old. Its history is not clear, but there is a legend that the plant of the same cultivar at Jizoin Temple in camellia japonica camellia seeds filtered camellia oil Kyoto was brought in from Korea during the war between Japan and Korea in 1593. This unique cultivar the pride of the people of Kyoto and Nara. -

The first two characters mean “the hibiscus region,” referring to Korea, while the other two (“luxuriant mugwort”) are a metaphor inspired by Confucian commentaries on the Chinese Book of Odes, and could be translated as “enjoy encouraging erudition.” SUBMISSIONS: Transactions invites the submission of manuscripts of both scholarly and more general interest pertaining to the anthropology, archeology, art, history, language, literature, philosophy, and religion of Korea. Manuscripts should be prepared in MS Word format and should be submitted as 2 hard copies printed double-spaced on A4 paper and in digital form. The style should conform to The Chicago Manual of Style (most recent edition). The covering letter should give full details of the author’s name, address and biography. Romanization of Korean words and names must follow either the McCune-Reischauer or the current Korean government system. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by two readers specializing in the field. Introduction Previous studies on the history of modern literature in Korea and Japan have focused on the history of exchange between Korea and China and the exchange between Japan and China; consequently, the relationship between Joseon and Japan has been neglected. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to examine the trend of international exchanges in East Asia by re-illuminating the influential relationship between Joseon and Japan in the study of early modern Japan. To this end, the present study aims to focus on an 18th century intellectual, Ueda Akinari (1734–1809), and examine his encounters with Joseon and foreign countries. Furthermore, this paper intends to examine his opinions on his own country and foreign countries, including Joseon, through the “sun-god debate” he participated in with Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801). -

Original Article The effects of Korean music Pansori Sugungga on mental health sung by Dong- jin Park Kyung Ja Ko1, Sung Yeoun Hwang2,* 1Department of Pharmacology, College of Korean Medicine, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Republic of Korea, Esperamondo of art organization, Seoul, Republic of Korea; 2Korea Bio Medical Science Institute, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, 06106, Republic of Korea ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to show that satire through Sugungga is beneficial for the mental health of people. Dong-jin Park is one of the greatest singers of Han Ak (Korean music, 韓樂). He is an authentic singing master through long-term training, which explains why his cheerful voice will certainly allow us to become unburdened. The story of Pansori Sugungga is akin to that of David and Goliath, the art of battling giants but a Korean version. Satire is a technique found in Pansori, Korean epic songs which use humor as a cover for more serious social criticism. Koreans have believed that outbursts of sentiment through satire are good for their mental health. For a long time, these singers have entertained Koreans with political satire and indirect counter-drives. Pansori Sugungga’s keen wit and satire have earned the love of Koreans. Koreans want vivid descriptions and surprising turns that end with catharsis through Sugungga and are therefore thrilled with Sugungga. Therefore, Sugungga in Han Ak (Korean music, 韓樂) is a good means of music therapy for better mental health. EXPLORING A TRADITION IDENTITY: GWANGDAEJEON IN JEONJU, AN INNOVATIVE STRATEGY IN PANSORI POPULARIZATION A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC AUGUST 2017 By Hae In Lee Thesis Committee: Byong Won Lee, Chairperson Frederick Lau Young-A Park ABSTRACT Gwangdaejeon (Battle of the Clowns) was a local North Jeolla province television show that premiered in 2012 and ended in 2015, with later seasons being broadcast throughout Korea. This program’s motto was to revive the traditional pansori stage which thrived around Jeonju, the state capital of the North Jeolla province. The show was filmed in hanok (traditional Korean house) village, a historical recreation of a traditional house town in Jeonju. Gwangdaejeon was a competition for the master pansori singers, myeongchang. Gwangdaejeon follows the structure of reality popular song competition programs, which are already familiar to the public. These programs are categorized into two types: amateur and professional competitions. The former centers on auditions for novices who want to become stars, for example, Superstar K. The latter are competitions, such as I am a Singer, exclusively feature professional experts. Gwangdaejeon was similar to I am a Singer, but for myeongchang. This thesis explores the ways a television show contributes to the promotion of Korean traditional music. While Korean pop culture, such as K-pop and TV dramas, are gaining huge popularity all over the world, pansori, an example of Korean traditional vocal music, is disregarded by the majority of Koreans even though it has cultural value. -
