Mission Statement The Mosque Foundation serves the spiritual, religious, and communal needs of area Muslims by means of nurturing their faith, upholding their values, and fostering the wellbeing of the community around us through worship, charity, education, outreach, and civic engagement. Annual Report 2007 3 President’s Remarks Dear Sisters and Brothers: Assalamu alaikum! On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Mosque Foundation, I humbly submit to you our Annual Report, asking for God’s acceptance and for your prayers, continuous support, and counsel. Serving a Mosque and its community is sacred work that is crucial to the success of our families and Islam in this area of the world. In a well known narration by Uthman Ibn Affan, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be on him, said, “Whoever builds a mosque, desiring thereby Allah’s pleasure, Allah builds for him the like of it in paradise.” (B. 8: 65) Facilities Building a Mosque needs collective community participation, pooling of resources, financial sacrifices, and, more importantly, purity of sincerity and intentions. We are in the midst of our largest expansion, which will triple our capacity (from 17,000 to 42,000 square feet), provide us with two new prayer areas for our sisters, a new prayer area for men, three baby sitting areas, a reading room and library, lecture hall for educational programs and interfaith activities, new offices for the Imams, secretary, the executive committee, and counseling, a new kitchen, a new washing area for women and men, a board and meeting room, a welcoming lobby at the entrance, all within a beautiful structure that connects aesthetically to the original Mosque building and crowned by a symbolic minaret and three additional domes. -

The Board of Directors, staff and volunteers of the Mosque Foundation proudly inform you of the developments and growth achieved by our community in 2008. We have reached many consequential milestones and surpassed expectations to deliver exceptional results, by the will of Allah (SWT). Our most noticeable improvement, the expansion project, is nearing completion. By the grace of Allah (SWT), our community truly joined hearts and extended hands, selflessly and generously, in hopes of concluding this historic endeavor. Our newly expanded Masjid enthusiastically opened its doors to thousands of worshippers last Ramadan, and for the first time in many years, we prayed Eid salah in unison, without the need to hold two separate prayers. The new, three-floor structure, the product of your spiritual and financial devotion, has added 25,000 sq. ft. to the existing 17,700 sq. ft. facility. The building, now able to accommodate an additional 1,200 worshippers, also includes much needed, and already utilized, halls and rooms for concurrent programs, childcare, a bookstore, kitchen, boardroom and administrative offices. -

Mukhtar Curtis THE EARLY ATTRACTION TO ORTHODOX ISLAM About forty years ago Rajah Mahmud, Ishaq Abdush-Shaheed, Yahya Abdul-Kareem, Hasan Abdul-Hameed, Sulayman Abdul Hadi, Luqman Abdul-Aleem, and others made up an amorphous group of New York African American converts to Islam. I Like many other African American converts in the New York area, they came into Islam by way of an immigrant connection or a "jazz route": many Muslims living in Harlem during the late 1940s and early 1950s were musicians.2 The converts frequently socialized at restaurants run by Muslims from the Caribbean and at clubs that featured Muslim entertainers or those attracted to Islam at one time or another such as Dakota Staton, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane. When the converts socialized they often discussed the necessity for a Dar al-Islam, an area where Muslims could practice and live an Islamic life as the norm without fear or apprehension. 3 This was their answer to the racism, segregation, and caste system of Ameri ca that came to the forefront of the national consciousness with such events as the lynching of 14-year-old Emmett Till and the rise to prominence of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. 4 Underly ing the bombings of Negro churches and homes, the lynchings of African Americans, and other forms of resistance by white Ameri ca to integration was the attitude that black Americans were "be ings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the 51 52 R. -

Kifah Mustapha’S Links to the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) and the Islamic Association for Palestine T(IAP)
Introduction he following memo describes in depth Kifah Mustapha’s links to the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) and the Islamic Association for Palestine T(IAP). During the HLF Hamas financing trial, both HLF and IAP were identified by the U.S. government as part of the Palestine Committee, a Hamas support network created by the Muslim Brotherhood. HLF’s assets were frozen in December 2001 by the U.S. and the organization was found guilty in 2008 of funneling money to Hamas. This memo also identifies the ties of Mustapha’s current employer, The Mosque Foundation of Bridgeview, Illinois, to HLF, IAP and other Islamist organizations. Mustapha has also continued to raise money for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and other Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups. Additionally, it appears that during a 2004 civil deposition, Mustapha failed to disclose the extent of his leadership role with the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP). 6 Dynamic Syntheses Rebellion, Absolute and Spiritual It was just as big a deal as coming out gay! It completely blew up in my face. My father threatened to pull me out of school. He wanted me to quit my job. He would talk to my sisters about disowning me. Eventually he cooled down. I learned really quick I had to pretend to give religion a chance. But, there’s a point of no return—where once you’ve separated yourself from it, you’re not gonna go back. Ibrahim [pseudonym] was twenty-four years old when we met. Within the first moments of our conversation, he impressed upon me that he was an atheist. Within the Islamizing ethos of the suburbs, to be a good person was to be a good Muslim as defined within the terms of reformist orthopraxy. But Ibrahim increas- ingly resisted being molded within this piety. The justifications for it made no sense to him. He especially questioned how an omnipotent, omniscient, yet just God could punish human beings. “I asked my mom if God has predetermined what I’m gonna do then why do I get punished for it?” he said. “She’s like, ‘Oh no, God gives you choices, you choose,’ but I was like, he knows what I’m gonna choose. That was the first time I thought God is unfair.” His mother recited Qur’anic passages and stories from the lives of the prophets but “eventually, you’re sick of hearing stories and you let it go, and after that, you can’t trust this whole thing.” SYNCRETIC REBELLIONS This chapter continues the discussion of syncretic secularity by focusing on tra- jectories that, in my data, originated in the religious milieu but then arced into nonsectarian outlooks.
