Dooley Dear Class of 2021, As we cap an unprecedented academic year, during which we have been tested daily by an uncompromising virus, I have seen us come together to accomplish what at times seemed like the impossible. I am incredibly proud of how our graduating class has responded to this crisis. Your resilience, ingenuity, and courage during this difficult period have earned you a special place in the great history of the University of Rhode Island. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all of us, forcing us to reevaluate everything we do—even our simplest interactions with friends and colleagues. We fell back on our strengths as a diverse and dynamic community so we could resume an in-person experience that started in the fall of 2020 and concludes in this celebration today. It was the teamwork of faculty and staff who devised and executed the plan to get us through the pandemic together. In a few months, we rolled out a testing program that helped us limit the spread of COVID-19 on campus. We reshaped education, building a structure to safely deliver thousands of courses to about 17,000 students, while at the same time planting the seeds for the classrooms of the future.

I do indeed know all Atoo well how costly each year is and perhaps we wonder at times about the price we pay. While there is a real financial cost to our daily life and efforts in L’Arche, I believe the even greater cost is giving of ourselves…our lives. And so I read on in Berry’s poem…. The gift is balanced by Its total loss, and yet, And yet the light breaks in, Heaven seizing its moments That are at once its own And yours. Light does indeed break in and we have some many moments of profound grace, growth and transformation in L’Arche - 2012 was no exception. We implemented guidelines on Healthy Boundaries and Safe Relationships crafted by the Community Council - this involved input at assistant meetings and special house meetings with both core members and assistants. We had talked about wanting to do this work for years and it felt like quite an accomplishment to bring it to fruition. We had some wonderful times of play and celebration. Spirit Week in February was a time of fun fellowship and also the culmination of our fitness challenge month.

    We, representatives from the music industry, write to demonstrate and express our determination, that love, unity and friendship, not division and hatred, must and will always be our common cause. In recent months through a series of events and incidents, the anti-black racists and antisemites, plus those who advocate islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia and transphobia, have repeatedly demonstrated that they clearly want us all to fail. Whether it be systemic racism and racial inequality highlighted by continued police brutality in America or anti-Jewish racism promulgated through online attacks, the result is the same: suspicion, hatred and division.
