MoMA | press | Releases | 2001 | Good Marchine: Tenth Anniversary Page 1 of 4 For Immediate Release February 2001 THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART TO CELEBRATE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF GOOD MACHINE, NEW YORK-BASED PRODUCTION COMPANY Good Machine: Tenth Anniversary February 13-23, 2001 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1 Over the past ten years, Good Machine, a New York-based production company helmed by Ted Hope, David Linde and James Schamus, has become one of the major forces in independent film culture worldwide. Dedicated to the work of emerging, innovative filmmakers, Good Machine has produced or co-produced films by, among others, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Nicole Holofcener, Ed Burns, Cheryl Dunye and Hal Hartley. Beginning with Tui Shou (Pushing Hands) (1992), the first collaboration between Good Machine and director Ang Lee, The Museum of Modern Art presents eight feature films and five shorts from February 13 through 23, 2001 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1. "Good Machine proves that audiences do want to be entertained intelligently and engaged substantively," remarks Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film and Video, who organized the series. "Their achievements are reflected in this Tenth Anniversary series and are, in large part, due to Good Machine's collaborations with filmmakers and its respect for the creative process." In addition to producing and co-producing films, Good Machine has gone on to establish an international sales company involved in distributing diverse and unusual works such as Joan Chen's Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998) and Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000). -

Chapter 4: Theatricality §1 Boundaries In Imagination and Power: The Ideological Analysis of Theatre 想象與權力: 戲劇意識形態研 究 (2003), Zhou Ning is “concerned with the theatricality in the deep layers of the psychological structure of Chinese cultural character,” arguing that “the function of both [ritual and thought] lies in transcending the boundaries between reality 現實 and the fabricated 虛構, or confusing the two, through illusion.”1 During the Boxer Uprising peasants believed they were immune to bullets, which shows that getting carried away can have dire consequences: The Boxer Uprising (1900-1901) has many ties with theater; it didn’t distinguish the real 真 from the illusory 幻 . [The Boxers] gathered and rebelled while singing arias, they practiced martial arts as if playacting, they were possessed by characters from plays and their spreading of fire, going into battle, tricks and moves were all just like those staged in plays.2 “Popular music creates alternative universes, echoey soundscapes allowing the listener to drift outside the often-stressful realities of everyday life,” argues Witzleben in his article on Anita Mui.3 Throughout this study, the term performance has been instrumental in conceptualizing seemingly stable concepts, such as Chineseness, rock and femininity, as constantly renegotiated creations or articulations of normative or alternative universes. -

Abstract Taiwanese Identity and Transnational Families
ABSTRACT TAIWANESE IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL FAMILIES IN THE CINEMA OF ANG LEE Ting-Ting Chan, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Scott Balcerzak, Director This dissertation argues that acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee should be regarded as a Taiwanese transnational filmmaker. Thus, to best understand his work, a Taiwanese sociopolitical context should be employed to consider his complicated national identity as it is reflected in his films across genres and cultures. Previous Ang Lee studies see him merely as a transnational Taiwanese-American or diasporic Chinese filmmaker and situate his works into a broader spectrum of either Asian-American culture or Chinese national cinema. In contrast, this dissertation argues his films are best understood through a direct reference to Taiwan’s history, politics, and society. The chapters examine eight of Lee’s films that best explain his Taiwanese national identity through different cultural considerations: Pushing Hands (1992) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) are about maternity; The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) consider homosexuality; The Ice Storm (1997) and Taking Woodstock (2009) represent a collective Taiwanese view of America; and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Lust, Caution (2007) reflect and challenge traditions of Taiwan Cinema. The eight films share three central leitmotifs: family, a sympathetic view of cultural outsiders, and a sympathy for the losing side. Through portraying various domestic relations, Lee presents archetypal families based in filial piety, yet at the same time also gives possible challenges represented by a modern era of equal rights, liberalism, and individualism – which confront traditional Taiwanese-Chinese family views. -

Film Classrooms on “LOVE” a.a. 2014-15 – II semestre MERCOLEDI’ 10 MARZO 2015: 亲情 Family love 《Eat, Drink, Man, Woman》1994 Director: Ang Lee Cast: Xing Lang,Yu-wen Wang, Chien-lien Wu Brief Introduction: Eat Drink Man Woman is a 1994 Taiwanese film directed by Ang Leeand starring Sihung Lung, Yu- wen Wang, Chien-lien Wu, and Kuei-mei Yang. The film was released on August 3, 1994, the first of Lee's films to be both a critical and box office success. In 1994, the film received the Asia Pacific Film Festival Award for Best Film, and in 1995 it received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The title is a quote from the Book of Rites, one of the Confucian classics, referring to the basic human desires and accepting them as natural. The beginning of the quote reads as follows: “The things which men greatly desire are comprehended in meat and drink and sexual pleasure;” (Translation by James Legge), Chinese: 「飲食男女,人之大欲存焉」. Many of the cast members had appeared in Ang Lee's previous films. Sihung Lung and Ah Lei Gua played central elderly figures dealing with the transition from tradition to modernity in The Wedding Banquet, in which Winston Chao also starred. Sihung Lung played an immigrant father in Pushing Hands. These three films show the tensions between the generations of a Confucian family, between East and West, and between tradition and modernity. They form what has been called Lee's "Father Knows Best" trilogy. Chapter 1: Place §1 Chinese Popular Music After introducing the singer and describing his migration from Malaysia to Singa- pore and his recent popularity in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and all over the Chinese di- aspora, the anchor [of the 1995 May 1st Concert] asked Wu [Qixian] how he de- fined himself in the final analysis. The musician’s reply, “I am Chinese” (wo shi Zhongguoren), which stirred a most enthusiastic and warm response from the au- dience, encapsulated everything Wu’s participation stood for, at least from the point of view from the state… By inviting … gangtai singers to participate in concerts and television programs, the Chinese state is not engaged so much in competing with other Chinese politics and identities … but rather in contesting their independence and in co-opting them into a greater Chinese nationalism, of which China is the core. In other words, the Chinese state is engaged in appropri- ating the concept of Greater China (Da Zhonghua).1 Gangtai is a 1980s PRC term for highly successful cultural products from Hong Kong (xiang gang) and Taiwan. In the above quotation, Nimrod Baranovitch rightly recognizes Hong Kong and Taiwan as major areas of production of Chinese pop music. -
