From April to September , every first Thursday of the month from 7.30pm to 10.00pm at Clarke Quay Central Fountain Square, expect six sessions of powerful Swing Jazz and Latino Salsa artiste line-up, free dance workshops and exclusive dining deals to jazz up your week.

Kicking off the series from April to June, Clarke Quay presents Swing Jazz Thursday . First Thursday of April : 7 April 2011 RJ ROJALES

Dubbed by many as a ‘Total Entertainer’, this actor/singer/host has many accolades to his name which span 3 countries, namely Australia, Singapore and the Philippines.

RJ’s professional career began in 1996 when he was cast as part of the ensemble in the original Australian production of Cameron Mackintosh’s ‘Miss Saigon’. Ten years later, he came full circle by joining the 2007-2008 Australian tour of the musical, this time playing the lead role of Thuy which earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Helpmann Awards (the Australian equivalent of The Tony Awards in Broadway).

In Singapore, RJ has established himself both in television and as a favorite leading man in musical theatre. He is perhaps most well know for his role as Chang in the hit musical ‘Chang and Eng’ produced by Action Theatre which has become the longest running musical in the country. Other credits include Forbidden City, The Student Prince, Man of Letters, Cabaret (with international Asian artist Fei Xiang) and most recently as Beast in Wild Rice’s production of’ Beauty and the Beast’. In the last few years, he has held successful solo concerts including, ‘RJ From Now On’, ‘Songs from the Heart, ‘A Tribute to Frank Sinatra’ and most recently ‘A Musical Journey with RJ Rosales’. Last year, he had the privilege to perform with international jazz singer, Ms Laura Fygi.

Her audiophile Jazz recording “The Way We Were” was a success in 22 countries but more so in Germany as she beat Norah Jones and was number 1 on a German Audiophile music charts for a number of months. The was also rated one of the best for the year 2002 to 2003.

Meet Umi Yushida, a true blue Singaporean Jazz songstress. The name is not even made-up. Many would’ve thought “Umi Yushida” to be perhaps, a stage name. Her name is as real as her voice, a presence you can never ignore. Umi has a voice and vocal styling that is unique, distinct and attractive. Her voice is rich with warmth and kind to the ears. Her vocals are smooth and diction, crystal clear

Umi’s career in music began in 1993 after she won a place in the finals of “Asia Bagus “, a Southeast Asian talent show that took place in Tokyo Japan. Her talent attracted local radio and TV producers and also music agencies after which Umi was invited to sing on various TV and radio programs and renowned 5 star hotels, clubs, pubs and theatres.

Rob completed against 700 other applicants, won the hearts of the guest panel and audience, and emerged as the winner in the Sky Television Show hosted by Garry Bushell.

He won the show by an overwhelming audience majority vote. The guest panel on the show consisted of Malandra Burrows (Emmerdale), comedian and presenter Bob Mills and former manager of The Pet Shop Boys, East 17 and Bros, Tom Watkins. They raved about his performance, Malandra Burrows “Fabulous choice of song, you’ve sent shivers down my spine. I’ve fallen in love...” Bob Mills “He stepped on the stage and it was like watching a young Elvis! You’re in there son!” Tom Watkins “I think he has one of the finest voices I’ve heard in a long time.” The show led to work at Comfort's Place Studios with famous producer/songwriter Andy Hill (Co-writer of Think Twice by Celine Dion, Heart of Stone by Cher.

In April of 1997 Garry Bushell named Rob as his “Tip For The Top” in his column in The Sun national newspaper. In December of 1997, Rob began working with Josh Phillips (keyboards/Programming for Allisha’s Attic, Big Country, Midge Ure, Leo Sayer) and Mark Brzezicki (Drummer/Writer for Big Country, The Cult, Phill Collins, Prince’s Trust Concerts). Along with Tim Renwick (Guitarist for Pink Floyd and Mike and the Mechanics) they recorded three original tracks at Blaze Music studios, London WC1 In 2000 rob started to work with Ben Copeland (many credits including tracks on Aaron Carter’s US smash album and a runner up entry in the 2002 Euro Song Contest.) This gave Rob the chance to ‘demo’ songs for record companies and has produced three new tracks (one a duet), including one used as a demo for S Club 7. Then, in Summer 2002, it was the US citizens turn to see what rob had to offer, when he performed for the second time at Graceland Crossing, opposite Elvis Presley's home, 'Graceland' in Memphis, TN, USA.

SUMMERTIMES BIG BAND

With a current line-up of 18 musicians, the band has set its eyes to becoming one of Singapore’s most active big bands.

The Big Band was formed with the objective of friendship and more importantly – to play good music, with great musicians, for an even greater audience. Members of the big band have mostly been either colleagues at various ensembles, or have met onstage the many jazz groups island-wide. More than two-thirds of the members are professional musicians. The coming-together to form their big band is a culmination of years of friendship and musical synergy never before experimented on local jazz grounds. The music of Summertimes Big Band will enunciate and expound the exuberant energy that flows beyond the dull practicalities of life today, promise. After all, it is music. Wonderful music.

With an impressive performance resume and several music festivals under her belt, Mei Sheum has emerged as the keyboardist of choice for many of the region’s best known artistes, including Chang Hui Mei, , Wang Lee Hom, , Andy Lau, , Eason Chan, as well as local artistes such as Kit Chan, JJ Lin, Claressa Monteiro, Dick Lee, and Jacintha.
