Podpis ABSTRAKT Xiangsheng je humorný vypravěčský žánr založený na satiře a komentáři společnosti, který je dnes považován za nejvýznamnějšího zástupce tradičních populárních umění quyi 曲艺. Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na takzvaný dialogický xiangsheng (duikou xiangsheng 对口相 声), který je představením dvou vypravěčů. Hlavními body zájmu jsou 50. léta 20. století, kdy byl xiangsheng využit pro potřeby propagandy nového státního zřízení, a období od roku 2005, kdy do veřejného povědomí vstupuje nejvýznamnější vypravěč současnosti Guo Degang 郭德纲 (1973–), který skrze návrat k tradici navrátil xiangsheng zpět na vrchol popularity. Cílem práce je komparativní studie xiangshengů z těchto dvou sociokulturně velmi odlišných období, a to zejména skrze formální a obsahovou analýzu xiangshengu „Noční jízda“ (Yexing ji 夜行记), který existuje ve verzi z 50. -

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis dan gaya bahasa yang dominan dalam lirik lagu pada album Bedtime Stories Karya Jay Chou.Adapun teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu teori stilistika oleh Nurgiantoro. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini adalah lirik lagu pada album Bedtime Stories Karya Jay Chou. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah album Bedtime Stories Karya Jay Chou. Hasil penelitian ini terdapat 56 data yang menunjukkan (1) jenis gaya bahasa yang terdapat dalam lirik lagu pada album Bedtime Stories Karya Jay Chou berjumlah 13 jenis, Bǐyù 比喻, Bǐnǐ 比拟, niān lián拈连, Kuāzhāng 夸张, Fǎngcí仿词, Wǎnqū婉曲, duì'ǒu 对偶, Duìbǐ对比, Fǎnfù 反复, Shèwèn 设问, Fǎnwèn 反问 , Tònggǎn痛感, Jǐngcè 警策. (2) gaya bahasa yang dominan dalam lirik lagu pada album Bedtime Stories Karya Jay Chou yaitu jenis Bǐyù 比喻 dengan jumlah 32%. Gender and the Family in Contemporary Chinese-Language Film Remakes
Gender and the family in contemporary Chinese-language film remakes Sarah Woodland BBusMan., BA (Hons) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Languages and Cultures 1 Abstract This thesis argues that cinematic remakes in the Chinese cultural context are a far more complex phenomenon than adaptive translation between disparate cultures. While early work conducted on French cinema and recent work on Chinese-language remakes by scholars including Li, Chan and Wang focused primarily on issues of intercultural difference, this thesis looks not only at remaking across cultures, but also at intracultural remakes. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of cultural politics, taking full advantage of the unique opportunity provided by remakes to compare and contrast two versions of the same narrative, and investigates more broadly at the many reasons why changes between a source film and remake might occur. Using gender as a lens through which these changes can be observed, this thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can be reflective not just of differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also of broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. The thesis endeavours to investigate the complexities of remaking processes in a Chinese-language cinematic context, with a view to exploring the ways in which remakes might reflect different perspectives on Chinese society more broadly, through their ability to compel the viewer to reflect not only on the past, by virtue of the relationship with a source text, but also on the present, through the way in which the remake reshapes this text to address its audience. -

Commercialization of Traditional Performing Arts in Mainland China: a Case Study of Deyunshe
COMMERCIALIZATION OF TRADITIONAL PERFORMING ARTS IN MAINLAND CHINA: A CASE STUDY OF DEYUNSHE Puman Hou* Benny Lim* * The Chinese University of Hong Kong http://doi.org/10.31039/jomeino.2021.5.1.5 Abstract China celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding in 2019, and this has triggered heightened imagination towards traditional Chinese arts and culture. In the same year, its Ministry of Culture and Tourism rolled out a comprehensive plan to conserve Received 15 October 2020 traditional artforms by promoting active revitalization. An in-depth case study of well-known Chinese crosstalk company, Deyunshe, is carried out. Case study involves in-depth investigations and the eventual understanding of real-world situations and phenomena. Deyunshe is one of the very few established Chinese crosstalk companies in China dedicated to revitalizing the art form. Research outcomes show that Deyunshe has been successful in revitalizing and commercializing Chinese crosstalk with its effective product, place, price, people, and physical evidence strategies. This in turn creates a viable model for traditional performing arts in China, crosstalk or otherwise, to be revitalized and made marketable. Nevertheless, the over- revitalization/commercialization of traditional performing arts may also result in the subordination of the artistic values of the artforms. Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself. -
Guo Degang: a Xiangsheng
Shenshen Cai Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne Guo Degang A Xiangsheng (Cross Talk) Performer Bridging the Gap Between Su (Vulgarity) and Ya (Elegance) Xiangsheng 相声 (cross talk), which has been one of the most popular folk art performance genres with the Chinese people since its emergence during the Qing Dynasty, began to lose its popularity at the turn of the 1990s. How- ever, this downward trajectory changed from about 2005, and it once again began to enthuse the public. The catalyst for this change in fortune has been attributed to Guo Degang and his Deyun Club 德云社. The general audience acclaim for Guo Degang’s xiangsheng performance not only turned him into a xiangsheng master and a grassroots cultural hero, it also, somewhat absurdly, evoked criticism from a few critics. The main causes of the negative critiques are the mundane themes and the ubiquitous vulgar baofu 包袱 (comical ele- ments) and rude jokes enlisted in Guo’s xiangsheng performance that revolve around the subjects of ethics, pornography, and prostitution, and which turn Guo into a signifier of vulgarity. However, with the media platform provided via the Weibo 微博 microblog, Guo Degang demonstrates his penchant for refined taste and his talent as an elegant literati. Through an in-depth analy- sis of both Guo Degang’s xiangsheng performance and his microblog entries, this paper will examine the contrasting features between Guo Degang’s artis- tic creations and his “private” life. Also, through the opposing contents and reflections of Guo Degang’s xiangsheng works and his microblog writings, an opaque and sometimes diametrically opposed insight into his worldviews is provided, and a glimpse of the dualistic nature of engagement and withdrawal from the world is revealed. -

Two of Zhao Benshan’s Comic Skits:1 Their Critical Implications in Contemporary China Aili Mu Iowa State University Abstract This paper explores the critical significance of two of Zhao Benshan’s comic skits Selling Crutches and Selling a Wheelchair in the context of contemporary China. Through a close analysis of the commercial mode of deception, this paper establishes the critical potential of Zhao’s skits to expose the art of influence and the paradigm of power in the general practice of hegemony. In so doing, this paper proves its central claim: Zhao’s skits, by way of showing how the desired customer is constructed, point to the inherent problems of market ideology and the danger of modernization as homogenization. In the skits’ aesthetic engagement of the audience and in the plurality of meaning that the audience’s responses manifest, this paper locates Zhao’s critical power—posing a forceful critique of the promotion of any absolute (concept, perspective, or mode of life) and cultivating a critical consciousness for the continuing creation of democratic sensibility.
