EARLY DUTCH SETTLEMENTS IN SOUTH DAKOTA The first families came to this area from the Netherlands because economic conditions were such that there was no future for farmers and artisans. Wages were very low, both for the laboring class and the farmer. Many farmers had retrogressed to such an extent that they were forced to abandon their farms, and many workmen were unable to find employment. I recall that many carpenters complained about conditions, and they did not believe that it would be much better in the United States. Moreover, there were very few who had the means to pay for such a journey. Only those who had received some money from an inheritance began to think about emigrating. Rickele Zylstra, son of Je1le Zylstra, made plans to go to America with his family. I believe that he left during the latter part of 1881, and his brother Rein went with him, as well as a few families from Wolvega. The latter had acquaintances in BonHomme County, and all first went to that area. In 1882 these two sons of uncle Je1le went to Charles Mix County, and took up a claim. Riekele built a sod house for his family, but Rein returned to the Netherlands to be married. But alas, the girl of his choice refused to go to America, so Rein returned alone. In 1883 Douse, the third son of uncle Jelle, came here, and with him a family from the province of Groningan, namely 1. Dyksterhuis, with his wife, son, and two daughters. An older son had arrived a year earlier. -

It offers reflection and re collection, it is an antidote against lost certitudes."1 Like perhaps no other medium, the music video clip is marking and shap ing our everyday culture: film, art, literature, advertisements they all are clearly under the impact of the music video in their aesthetics, their technical procedures, visual worlds or narrative strategies. The reason for this has not only to be sought in the fact that some of the video di rectors are now venturing into art or advertisement, but that also peo ple not working in the field of producing video clips are indebted to this medium.2 Thus, more or less former video clipdirectors such as Chris Cunningham or Jonas Akerlund have established themselves successfully with their creations which very often are based on ideas and concepts, originally developed for earlier music videos: both Cunningham's works Flex and Monkey Drummer, commissioned in 2000 respectively 2001 by the Anthony d'Offay Gallery, evolved out of his earlier music videos.' Flex relies on the fantastic and weightless underwater cosmos Cunningham designed for the images that accompanied Portishead's Only you in 1998. Monkey Drummer* is heavily based on the soundtrack written by the Irish musician Aphex Twin (Richard David James) for whom Cunningham had previously directed famous videos such as Come to Daddy (1997) and Win- dowlicker (1999). -

~ Abrams blends puppets and culture BY BOB YATES ECREditor In an on-going effort to blend culture and entertainment, the Noon Hour Concert Series tomorrow will present "Folk Heroes of the Puppet Stage." The performance will be given by professional puppeteer Steven Abrams and his associates from Philadelphia. Abrams has been presenting puppet shows for over 15 years all across the nation. In 1972 and again in 1974 he performed at the Library and Museum ofthe Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Abrams has displayed his talent in numerous parks, libraries, and has even performed on Indian reservations. The show while amusing and entertaining, is actually a history of the puppet stage. Abrams traces the long tradition of puppetering from the sketch "Shiva and the Toy-maker," an Indian marionette act from the fifth century B.C., to . "Guignol" a French hand puppet that first appeared in 1815. Some ofthe other sketches to be performed include "Dance of Four" and act by Japanese Bunraku puppets, an appearance by th~ Russian puppets "Ivan and Petrushka," and a performance of the traditional "Punch and Judy" skit. THE DIVINE COMEDY – A BIOGRAPHY The Divine Comedy is Neil Hannon. Over the years, the name has encompassed other musicians, but the driving force of the band and its main (sometimes only!) member has always been Neil Hannon. He chose the name 'The Divine Comedy' aged 18, almost at random. He and two Enniskillen school friends needed a new name for their band and Neil spotted a copy of Dante’s epic poem on the family bookshelf. It stuck, and a year later it was the name under which the trio signed to Irish run indie Setanta Records. They left Northern Ireland, moved into a squat in London, released a mini-album, 1990’s REM/Ride influenced 'Fanfare for the Comic Muse' and ‘91’s ‘Europop’ E.P. then split up. Neil's bandmates went to university and Neil returned home. Retaining the name, he spent 18 months living in his parents’ attic, sleeping during the day, watching old movies and writing songs at night. Influenced by everything from Jacques Brel, Scott Walker and Michael Nyman to "A Room with a View", Wordsworth, and Mr Benn, these songs eventually evolved into two albums. The first of these, ‘Liberation’ was released in 1993. Totally different to anything else around, and indeed his previous work, he now considers it his first album proper. The press adored it. The NME described it as "..an array of seductive yarns.. glorious, gleeful tunesmanship." Dave Cavanagh, writing in Select said "...one of the bountiful, overflowing joys of the year. Any year." Melody Maker described it as "An album that could make any listener want to stumble up to him and proclaim ‘Neil, you’re a genius’". -

SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys. -

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
