Avremel is a severely autistic young man in his 20s, so uncommunicative that he cannot respond to any verbal instructions — even from his beloved choir leader, the indefatigable Chaim Sofer. One of the only windows into Avremel’s soul — and those of his fellow choir members — is music. Seeach Sod in Jerusalem cares for 650 children and young adults with disabilities that range from slight emotional difficulties to severe autism and Down syndrome, mainstream- ing them and letting them shine in their own way.

Kikuchi, Program Representative A265 Murphy Hall Mail Code: 157101 From: Elisabeth Le Guin Department of Musicology RE: Proposal for GE credit for Music History M73 and 69 On behalf of the department of Musicology, I am submitting the attached proposals to allow our new courses, Music History M73: Music & Religion in Popular Culture and Music History 69: Music & Politics, to satisfy the university’s GE requirement in Visual and Performance Arts Analysis and Practice, Historical Analysis, and Social Analysis effective Fall 2017. These innovative new courses were designed with the principles of general education in mind and were created in an attempt to meet the increased demand for diverse popular music courses. The Department of Musicology has been proposing new GE that address the aspects of listening and music that intersect with other disciplines such as social sciences, history, ethics, and politics. We would also like to use the experience and expertise of Professors Shana Redmond and Mark Kligman, whose research is addressing these topics. Please note that although courses in Music History have tended to be classified under “Visual and Performance Art Analysis and Practice,” we are applying for Historical and Social Analysis GE credit, as well, in view of both the interdisciplinary nature of the topic and the broad spectrum of approaches explored in the course.     Lifeboat Ethics Parshiyot Behar Bechukotai - 57811 One of the great moral and ethical scenarios debated by philosophers, ethicists and spiritual leaders alike is a category of decision making known as “lifeboat ethics,” a term coined by the ecologist Garrett Hardin in a 1968 article titled “Tragedy of the Commons.” In this article, he described the following scenario: A lifeboat that can hold 60 passengers has room for 10 more people, but 100 people are waiting to be saved. If the lifeboat takes on everyone, all the passengers will drown; if the boat takes on no one, the current passengers will live; if it takes on an additional ten passengers, they will survive as well, but the journey will become more risky, and difficult decisions will have to be made as to who should be saved. These questions are not merely thought experiments.     Ira Heller is blessed with one of the great voices in Jewish music today. He is a dynamic performer, and a versatile, vocal stylist with a repertoire that spans traditional, classical, Hasidic, Broadway, and popular music. His mastery of the stage and commanding presence has capti- vated audiences around the world. He has also earned recognition for his talent as a composer and lyricist, and his songs have been counted among the most beautiful that Modern Jewish Music has produced. He is regularly called upon to officiate at events of para- mount importance to the Jewish Community, and his voice is familiar and known at the forefront of many major Jewish causes. He has been featured in the entertainment section of New York Newsday as well as numerous other major publications, and was the first orthodox Jew to be invited by the New York Mets to sing the National Anthem at Shea stadium. Subsequent to the 9/11 terrorist attack, when a Chanukah Menorah was dedicated at ground zero, Ira was afforded the honor to officiate, and performed the candle lighting ceremony. He has released 6 albums, all to enthusiastic acclaim, and is regularly featured on Jewish radio around the world. Ira is also a long time student of classical singing, and recently, was chosen to be part of a select group of classical singers headed by the great vocal maestro, Sherril Milnes.
