Pogonophobia Is the Fear of Beards Pogonophobia Is The Fear Of Beards The beard has been the symbol of manliness forever, close trimmed, full and properly manicured, even wild and bushy and out of control, the beard stands supreme. It has stood for many masculine virtues, including wisdom, strength, high social status, even sexual prowess, especially in warrior cultures. While there have been places that it hasn’t necessarily been in style, or even possible to grow for some, overall there has been a great deal of admiration and respect for someone sporting a fine beard. World Beard Day celebrates the beard and all it has been, become, and will be in days to come. History of World Beard Day Every year people gather in places all over the world to sport their beard, with various ways of celebrating. The origins of World Beard Day have been lost to history, which isn’t surprising considering that there is evidence that the Danish Vikings have held a day in honor of their beard going back as far as 800 AD. Back in those august days, there wasn’t a specific day held to honor the beard, but multiple celebrations throughout the region. Some of the celebrations are even a little crazy. Take Dönskborg, Sweden for instance, where all those who lack a beard are banished from the town to spend a day and night in the nearby forest. In town their shamefully clean-faced visages are burned in effigy by those sporting amazing beards. In southern Spain there is a tradition of having a bearded man and a beardless boy engage in a boxing match, if you can call it a boxing match when the man is armed with a sharp pike. Regardless of where you are, shaving on World Beard Day is considered to be one of the worst acts of disrespect possible, and in some places those with beards are waited on hand and foot! 1. On average, a man’s beard will grow 5.5 inches per year. 2. If you were to put down the razor and stop shaving forever, how long would your beard be? 27.5 feet. 3. A man who shaves spends roughly 3,350 hours of his life in the bathroom. 4. There are around 30,000 whiskers encompassing your face. 5. 55% of men from the around world can be seen sporting a beard or facial hair. 6. Pogonophobia, aka fear of beards. Should you oddly enough have this, you’ll expirence symptoms of nausea, feelings of dread, sweating and irregular heartbeat, among others. Who knew a soft, fuzzy beard could be a traumatic experience for some. 7. If you study beards professionally you are a “Pogonologist”. The study itself goes by “Pogonology”. david sedaris: Me talk pretty one day ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY ANYONE WHO WATCHES EVEN THE SLIGHTEST amount of TV is familiar with the scene: An agent knocks on the door of some seemingly ordinary home or office. The door opens, and the person holding the knob is asked to identify himself. The agent then says, "I'm going to ask you to come with me." They're always remarkably calm, these agents. If asked "Why do I need to go anywhere with you?" they'll straighten their shirt cuffs or idly brush stray hairs from the sleeves of their sport coats and say, "Oh, I think we both know why." The suspect then chooses between doing things the hard way and doing things the easy way, and the scene ends with either gunfire or the gentlemanly application of handcuffs. Occasionally it's a case of mistaken identity, but most often the suspect knows exactly why he's being taken. It seems he's been expecting this to happen. The anticipation has ruled his life, and now, finally, the wait is over. You're sometimes led to believe that this person is actually relieved, but I've never bought it. Though it probably has its moments, the average day spent in hiding is bound to beat the average day spent in prison. When it comes time to decide who gets the bottom bunk, I think anyone would agree that there's a lot to be said for doing things the hard way. The agent came for me during a geography lesson.
