Dolemite Is My Name
DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski FINAL IN THE BLACK We hear Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" playing softly. VOICE I ain't lying. People love me. INT. DOLPHIN'S - DAY CU of a beat-up record from the 1950s. On the paper cover is a VERY YOUNG Rudy, in a tuxedo. It says "Rudy Moore - BUGGY RIDE" RUDY You play this, folks gonna start hoppin' and squirmin', just like back in the day. A hand lifts the record up to the face of RUDY RAY MOORE, late '40s, black, sweet, determined. RUDY When I sang this on stage, I swear to God, people fainted! Ambulance man was picking them off the floor! When I had a gig, the promoter would warn the hospital: "Rudy's on tonight -- you're gonna be carrying bodies out of the motherfucking club!" We see that we are in a RADIO BOOTH. A sign blinks "On The Air." The DJ, ROJ, frowns at the record. ROJ "Buggy Ride"? RUDY Wasn't no small-time shit. ROJ GodDAMN, Rudy! That record's 1000 years old! I've got Marvin Gaye singin' "Let's Get It On"! I can't be playin' no "Buggy Ride." (beat) Look, I have 60 seconds. I have to cue the next tune. Hm! Rudy bites his lip and walks away. Roj tries to go back to his job. He reaches for a Sly Stone single -- when Rudy suddenly bounds back up. RUDY How about "Step It Up and Go"? That's a real catchy rhythm-and-blues number. -

An Evening with David Sedaris
MEDIA RELEASE Monday 10 August SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE presents AN EVENING WITH DAVID SEDARIS “Sedaris’s droll assessment of the mundane and the eccentrics who inhabit the world’s crevices make him one of the greatest humorists writing today.” – Chicago Tribune “Sedaris ain’t the preeminent humorist of his generation by accident.” – Entertainment Weekly “He’s smart, he’s caustic, he’s mordant, and, somehow, he’s…well, nice.” – Toronto Globe and Mail NPR humourist and bestselling author David Sedaris returns to the Sydney Opera House in January 2016 as part of a much anticipated third tour down under. An Evening with David Sedaris sees audiences treated to Sedaris reading from a selection of his new and unpublished essays and diary entries, which he writes in daily. It’s thanks to his trademark sardonic wit and incisive social critiques that Sedaris has become one of America’s preeminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness has earned him a reputation as a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Fans of Sedaris will know him as the author of multiple best-selling books including Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames and his most recent book, Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls. November 17 – December 31, 2017 ATLANTA (September 27, 2017) – After nearly two decades of holiday hilarity, Horizon’s 19th year of The Santaland Diaries will be marked by a passing of the elf hat and booties to a new leading actor! Horizon Theatre announced today that acclaimed local actor, columnist and playwright Topher Payne will take over the role of everyone’s favorite satirical, sarcastic elf, Crumpet, in David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries! Actor Harold Leaver, who blossomed into a beloved local celebrity in this iconic role which he has played at Horizon since it first debuted in the 1990s, is hanging up his tights and turning the telling of Sedaris’ now-classic alternative holiday tale. Returning November 17 –December 31 to Horizon Theatre Company, the hilarious holiday sensation is sure to brighten the season. Creative Loafing describes the show as “a hilarious cocktail, serving up a dose of seasonal spirit so potent even the most cynical Scrooge could get tipsy.” This non-traditional, adult-only, Christmas comedy provides the perfect laughter-induced remedy to the holiday hustle and bustle. Jolly and tall, Topher Payne will bring his own Will Ferrell-like presence and caustic wit to the festivities as Crumpet depicts the tale of his stint as a Macy’s Department Store elf. -
