Diversity is an important value of the Shad program. You will meet students from across Canada, with different cultural backgrounds, school experiences and family lives. Respect for all individuals is a requirement of a successful community.

At Shad, you will experience a sense of community and belonging unlike anything that you have likely experienced before. Shad Alumni tell us over and over again, that this community is the most memorable and impactful thing about the program. We received this same feedback after our virtual program in 2020, and we are excited to see our Shad Carleton community develop in 2021!

Building a successful community is hard work; it doesn’t just happen. It takes diversity, humility, empathy and intentionality. Our Shad team works hard to create conditions for community to form, but it also takes commitment from you. During Shad2021 Online, you will be called on to be respectful of others. Respect and inclusivity, two magic ingredients of Shad. A Supervised Community

Shad is a supervised community. Every member of the program team is charged with the responsibility of ensuring your safety and protection while participating in our online environment. This is a responsibility which we take seriously, and you are a key partner in our efforts. All members of our Shad Carleton community have agreed to demonstrate behaviour consistent with our Shad Values when they accepted placement in the program. Any behaviour which deviates from these values will be addressed. 7 Shad Values

Participating with Respect

Our values are what make Shad the incredible program that it is. At Shad Carleton, we vigorously embrace these values, as do all Shad programs.

Adherence to these values determines how successful your Shad experience will be. They are sacred trusts.

Shad-Spectations You have a lot of material telling you what Shad is about. Now it is your turn to tell us what you expect from the Shad program. You are to write us an old-fashioned letter and mail it to us – in an envelope, with a stamp, including a letter listing three (3) goals that you have for Shad 2021. All the details are provided on our campus website at Carleton.ca/shad. Please postmark your letter by May 14, 2021.

Shad Speak During the program, you will be asked to give a 5-minute presentation on a topic of your choice. It is an opportunity for you to share your passions, your dreams, your talents, or visions. Chances are if you’re excited about your topic, other Shad participants will be too! Your presentation can be support by a PowerPoint presentation however, your fellow Shads are much most interested in your topic and passion than a bunch of slides. Consider a PowerPoint-less Shad Speak!

Be prepared to give your Shad Speak at anytime during the program (could even be on Day 1!).

Submit an abstract (300 words or less) of your Shad Speak by June 1, 2021 to [email protected]

Bio-Tile At the very beginning of the program we will be running an introduction activity that will require you to have a completed bio-tile. A bio-tile provides some insight as to who you are and demonstrates features that represent you. There are only three requirements for the bio-tile:

• Max size: 15 cm X 15 cm X 2 cm • It must be creative! • It must be unique to you.

After that, it’s up to you. The more creative the better! Make sure that you have your bio-tile ready for day 1. Send a picture of your final bio-tile to [email protected] by June 25, 2021.

We are so thrilled you will be joining the Shad Carleton community. The Leadership Team and Facilitators cannot wait to meet you. We have an incredible summer planned which will no doubt challenge you and enable you to meet other students from across the country.

Shad 2021 The best month of your life, & the best month for your life!
