German repressions were discussed. Retaliation actions in the Polish villages for helping the soldiers of the Polish Underground State were aimed at forcing the citizens to obey and discouraging them from helping the partisans. There still remain many issues that require further research into the history of the Polish countryside during German occupation. The IPN’s branch office in Kielce and the Kielce Village Museum plan to organize further scientific conferences. The conference was accompanied by the exhibition „I remember that horrible day. German repressions in the Polish countryside in 1939-1940”, authored by Katarzyna Jedynak, PH.D. The organizers of the conference were the IPN's Kielce branch and the Kielce Village Museum. *** During World War II, the Germans pacified at least 817 Polish villages. The inhabitants were shot, taken to concentration camps, and forced labor camps to the Third Reich. Their belongings were robbed and destroyed. Farms and entire villages were burnt down. The eastern Polish lands were subjected to brutal Sovietization, and a significant part of the Polish population was deported to the East of the USSR.

Katarzyna Jedynak Kielce Village Museum Mausoleum of the Martyrdom of Polish Villages in Michniów KIELCE PROVINCE VILLAGES DURING WORLD WAR II The plan to exploit the Polish lands and to gradually ruin the Polish nation had been created by the leaders of the Third Reich before World War II even began. Therefore, the totality of German crimes against Poles and other nationalities must be considered as deliberate and planned actions. The occupier aimed to subjugate the Polish people and ultimately exterminate them after winning the war. In September 1939, Kielce Province came under the control of the Wehrmacht. During the 55 days of Wehrmacht rule (1 September – 25 October 1939), its frontline units committed numerous crimes against the inhabitants of the rural areas of Kielce Province. Random residents of conquered villages were killed on sight. Residents of the following villages met their demise in this way: Lelów, Ślężany, Szczekociny, Koniecpol, Wodzisław, Chmielnik, Daleszyce and others. The Germans would often terrorise the villages they conquered by killing off parts of their populations. 80 people were killed in Lipsk, 50 in Pińczów and 30 in Miechów. The Germans also killed civilians in retaliation whenever they met with resistance from the Polish Army. After the Battle of Krasna (6 September), German soldiers killed 24 people in the village itself and the nearby village of Komorów, including 4 Jews and 3 POWs. Civilians were also frequently used as human shields. This was the case during the battles fought near Odrzywół, where seven people died as a result. Starting in mid- September, Wehrmacht, gendarmerie and Ordnungspolizei units began to arrest and execute Poles, primarily members of the intelligentsia, political and social activists, as well as Jews.

  • When a Nation Is Being Murdered” – the Secret Biological and Chemical War Against the Third Reich
Zeszyty Naukowe AON nr 2 (103) 2016 ISSN 0867–2245 HISTORIA WOJSKOWOŒCI ”WHEN A NATION IS BEING MURDERED” – THE SECRET BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WAR AGAINST THE THIRD REICH Robert PETERSEN, Ph.D. Centre for Biosecurity and Biopreparedness, Denmark Abstract During the Second World War, the Polish resistance movement used chemical and biological weapons (CBW) against the Nazi occupation in Poland and inside the Third Reich. This subject is under growing scrutiny in modern-day Poland, but remains largely unknown outside the country. By using a wide range of sources (including Polish and German wartime records) this paper attempts to reconstruct what happened. Key words: chemical and biological warfare, Home Army, second world war Introduction The Second World War in Europe began with the German invasion of Poland in 1939. Over the following six years, the Poles were victims of severe persecution and genocide, thereby losing six million citizens (or 22 percent of the population). Half of the victims were Polish Jews1. While suffering at the hands of foreign occupiers, the Poles also developed one of the most sophisticated resistance movements during the war. The first named ZWZ (Związek Walki Zbrojnej, Union of Armed Struggle) and renamed AK (Armia Krajowa, Home Army) in 1942 was meant to be a secret Polish army loyal to the Polish Government-in-Exile. At its peak in 1944, the AK probably had about 380,000 members, although only a small percentage of them were properly armed2. A significant part of the AK perished during the Warsaw Uprising in August-October 1944, when they tried and failed to liberate the Polish 1 Richard C.

2020 stod i foråret i jubilæernes tegn.
