Bahasa adalah satu sistem lambang bunyi yang bersifat arbitrer, unik, produktif, dinamis, dan bervariasi (Chaer, 2007:13). Setiap negara di dunia memiliki bahasa kesatuannya sendiri. Tapi ada juga beberapa negara yang menggunakan bahasa yang sama dengan negara tetangganya. Seperti bahasa Melayu yang digunakan di Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, dan Indonesia. Namun ada juga negara yang bahasa kesatuannya hanya dimiliki oleh negara tersebut, yaitu Jepang. Ada beberapa kosa kata dalam bahasa Jepang yang memiliki makna ganda. Bila diterjemahkan ke bahasa Indonesia maknanya belum tentu sesuai dengan yang dimaksud di dalam bahasa Jepang. Perbedaan makna yang terdapat dalam satu kosa kata dapat terjadi dalam struktur linguistik. Cabang linguistik yang mengkaji mengenai makna bahasa adalah semantik. Semantik memiliki peranan penting untuk membuat pendengar melaksanakan sesuatu sesuai kehendak yang diinginkan penutur. Semantik tidak hanya mengkaji tentang makna bahasa, tetapi juga simbol dan tanda (Chaer, 2007:67). Bila kata yang diucapkan tidak dipahami dengan makna yang sama seperti yang diinginkan pembicara, komunikasi akan mengalami gangguan. Untuk itu, pengetahuan mengenai kata yang bermakna ganda harus lebih ditingkatkan. Pemakaian kosa kata yang tidak 1 Universitas Sumatera Utara tepat dapat menimbulkan kesalahpahaman dalam berbahasa. Hal ini sering terjadi pada pembelajar bahasa Jepang. Maka peran Semantik juga untuk menghindari kesalahpahaman yang terdapat dalam berkomunikasi. Semantik membahas relasi makna, yaitu Sinonim, Antonim, Homonim, Hipernim, Hiponim, Akronim, dan Polisemi. Polisemi adalah kata yang mengandung makna lebih dari satu atau ganda (Pateda, 2010:214). Polisemi adalah satu kata yang memiliki banyak arti. Penggunaannya tergantung pada kondisi pembicaraan berlangsung. Polisemi dapat mengakibatkan terjadinya kesalahpahaman karena faktor berikut: 1. Adanya pergeseran pemakaian bahasa. 2. Faktor susunan kata dalam kalimat. 3. Pemakaian yang dikhususkan dalam suatu lingkungan sosial. 4. Pengaruh bahasa asing. 5. Pemakai bahasa asing yang ingin menghemat penggunaan kata. 6. Faktor pada bahasa itu sendiri yang terbuka untuk menerima perubahan. 7. Pengucapan yang terlalu cepat. JUMP: Exploring the cultural phenomenon of Language in Japanese band names Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Abstract In Japan, English-language usage in the public sphere, from advertising through popular music, general media, and signage runs a gamut of uses and accuracies from the intentional and unintentional misuse, to the irreverent and the occasional sublime. This paper sets out to explore and record the use of English in the naming of Japanese pop and rock groups. The central thesis of this essay being that Japanese pop and rock group names fall into five distinct categories or phenomena: meaningless names using language other than Japanese, arbitrary names from second languages, bastardised 'other' language derivatives, Romanised Japanese, and mixed Japanese and other language. This grouping ignores those names rendered in kan-ji, which although acknowledged, are not specifically within the scope of this research. By deconstructing and analysing this use, it is hoped to contribute to discourse in the fields of both culture (cultural appropriation), and language (language use and accuracy).     Kitagawa Johnny: The Showa Returnee Who Re-imagined the American “Musical” as Idol Teen Culture for the Heisei Era and Beyond. In the past decade, the story of, Kitagawa (Hiromu) Johnny and his talent agency Johnny’s & Associates—known in Japan as “Janizu Jimsho” and hereafter referred to as J&A— has been explored by scholars working in both popular culture (Chaney 2000; Chun 2018) and cultural studies (Darling-Wolf 2004; Nagaike, 2012; Mansor, 2018). The research and publications of these scholars in the area of transnational cultural flow and gender-based fandom exists alongside the earlier work of well-informed Japan-based journalists and writers, most notably Poole (2012) and Brasor (2014). As journalists, the latter naturally put emphasis on issues relating to the impact of J&A on contemporary Japanese popular culture. As such, their work mostly explores the ways in which the organization has, in the past three decades, created a tightly controlled business model, one built around total control of the activities of their roster of male artists or tarento. Their research and publications, aimed at a general audience, have attempted to explicate the ways in which the agency has managed to dominate a significant segment of Japanese TV and entertainment, sometimes through questionable or unethical methods. The work of these journalists and the academics mentioned earlier, do of course, include the most pertinent details of the early life of Kitagawa and his efforts to create a new kind of entertainment model focusing on the female baby boomer demographic. They do not, however, have as their goal an explanation or evaluation of the place or status of J&A in the early entertainment and popular culture history of Japan.
