Surefire™ High Energy Spark Igniter, SF-1 SF-1 December 15, 2020 FIREYE® SureFireTM HIGH ENERGY SPARK IGNITER (HESI) Instruction Manual DESCRIPTION The High Energy Spark Igniter (HESI) is a Class 3 (special) igniter used for direct spark ignition of oil or gas igniters or small burners. The 12 joules of power delivered to the spark tip easily ignites the fuel. Three sparks per second are delivered. The High Energy Spark Igniter consists of three major components: a power pack, a spark rod, and a cable. The power pack is packaged in a NEMA-4 or NEMA-4X enclosure suitable for wall mounting at the burner front. The power pack develops the 12 joules of power delivered to the spark tip through the use of heavy-duty electrical components. It has a 100% duty cycle at temperatures up to 130° F ambient. The spark rod features a self-cleaning surface gap spark tip that is easily replaceable through a threaded connection. Spark rods are available with an optional retraction assembly to allow the spark tip to be inserted and retracted from the firing position. FEATURES Non-fouling Spark Tip The surface gap spark tip produces a self-cleaning, highly reliable, 12-joule spark even in the presence of moisture, oil, and carbon deposits. Removable Spark Tip The spark tip completely detaches from the spark rod through a threaded connection. Replacement of the spark tip is quick and easy. Safe Operation Heavy-duty, UL-approved flexible cable connects the power unit to the spark rod assembly ensuring operator safety. Mount the power pack in a suitable location as far as possible from the burner front extreme temperatures. Ensure that cable connectors are facing downward. 2. Carefully insert the HESI spark rod tip into the guide tube until the spark rod extends into the primary ignition zone. With Fireye SureFire 20 gas igniters, position spark tip flush with front of baffle plate. 3. If retraction assembly is supplied, manually or automatically exercise the retract assembly to verify correct operation. 4. Once tip penetration is set, attach and tighten the locking device to the spark rod. 5. Connect cable assembly from the power unit to the spark rod. Tighten threaded connection. 6. Connect power input leads to H (hot), N (neutral), and G (ground) to terminal block 2 inside the power pack. 7. Energize the power pack to test the spark tip. Observe proper operation. 3 © 2020 Carrier HESI SPARK ROD The HESI spark rod comes in lengths from 14” (356mm) up to 180” (457 mm) in 2” (51mm) incre- ments. The HESI spark rod features a positioning rod and a removable surface gap spark plug tip designed for long life and ease of maintenance. FIGURE 1. High Energy Spark Rod Assembly LENGTH SELECTION The “L” dimension is the distance from the firing end of the spark tip back to the threaded connection between the positioning rod and the weather head. In selecting a HESI spark rod length there are two dimensions that make up the total rod length. One is the distance from the firing end of the spark tip back to the burner front plate, and the other is the distance from the burner front plate back to the threaded connections at the weather head. The total of these two distances equals the dimension “L” of the HESI spark rod. Both dimensions can be obtained from a burner drawing if it is a retrofit application. If this is a new HESI application the following general rules can be used: GAS IGNITERS Locate the spark tip at the upstream location of the primary combustion zone. Measure the distance back to the burner front plate. Add 12” (305mm) to this distance for the amount of exposure outside the burner front plate. The total of these two distances will be the dimension “L”. Refer to the HESI spark rod drawing. HESI POWER PACK The HESI power pack comes in two voltages, 110 VAC and 220 VAC, 50/60HZ, and is housed in a NEMA-4 junction box made of carbon steel painted gray or a NEMA-4X junction box made of brushed stainless steel. HESI INTERCONNECTING CABLE This is a two conductor, prefabricated cable, sheathed in a flexible conduit with plug-in connectors at both ends. The HESI is offered in 6’ (1.83), 9’(2.74m), 12’ (3.66m) and 15’ (4.72m) lengths. HESI MOUNT TUBE -Fixed (optional) The HESI Mounting Tube consists of a 1.05” (27mm) OD, carbon steel, with packing gland, locking collar and quick release coupling. The mount tube is suitable for welding directly onto the burner front plate and it provides support for the HESI rod. Select the mount tube length based upon the HESI igniter length (see Ordering Information section). If the HESI is to be used in conjunction with an oil igniter, please refer to the HESI Retraction Assembly. 4 © 2020 Carrier HESI SPARK TIP The spark tip (provided with spark rod) comes in one of two lengths depending on the length of the spark rod. HESI Retractor Assembly (consisting of pneumatic cylinder, extended-position limit switch, packing gland and collar). 2. Retraction mount tube (P/N MT1R-XXX). 3. HESI spark rod (SFR-XXX). 4. HESI Power Pack (P/N SF1-X). 5. HESI interconnecting cable (P/N SF1-CA1-XX). FIGURE 3. Abstract Distribution transformers in rural networks have to cope with transient overvoltages, even with those caused by the direct lightning strokes on the lines. In Finland, the 24 kV network conditions, such as wooden pole lines, high soil resistivity and isolated neutral network, lead into fast transient overvoltages. The distribution transformers (< 200 kVA) have been protected and a major part is still protected using protective spark gaps. The protection characteristics of different spark gap types were studied widely using improved measuring techniques.

Siahlo∗ February 27, 2015 Research Institute for Nuclear Problems, Belarusian State University, Bobruiskaya 11, 220030 Minsk, Belarus Abstract The numerical simulation of an air spark gap has been carried within two theoretical models. The kinetic one [1] allowed us to calculate time dependencies for the residual resistance (0.2 - 0.4 Ohm for our selection of a circuit parameters), the spark gap channel width, the electron number density, the mobility, the conductivity, the ionization degree, the magnetic field in the discharge channel, the channel inductance and the electron drift velocity. Simulating a real circuit and taking into account a spark gap residual resistance demonstrates good agreement of both models with the experimental data, while that without taking into account this resistance overestimates the maximal current in the circuit by approximately 5%. 1 Introduction The high-voltage spark gap switches are essential elements of the circuits containing magneto- cumulative generators, capacitive and inductive energy storages, electro-explosive circuit break- ers etc. Very frequently spark gaps affect sufficiently the operation of the circuits and one cannot satisfactorily describe main elements functioning in the absence of a quantitative model of the processes occurring in the spark gaps. This article is devoted to the comparison of two such models considering a real circuit, where the influence of a high-voltage spark gap results in a decrease of the maximal current for about 5%. We review in detail the model [1] based on the time dependent method for the electron number density simulation in the air spark gap channel using an anisotropic solution of the kinetic equation [2].

A pulse forming network consisting of two low loss 16 coaxial cables in parallel is charged from a H.V. power supply. At the desired maximum voltage the stored energy in the cables is switched into the magnet which is also matched by a triggered spark gap. As the magnet is a balanced four terminal network? both positive and negative supplies are needed, as are the associated pairs of cables and spark gaps. A change—over switch selects the direction of ‘kick'. A choice of 3 bunch or 6 bunch ejection required two pairs of charging cables (termed the ‘short' and 'long' cables), and thus four individual power supplies (Fig. 1). General description 2 The four similar power supplies are all housed in an oil filled tank. The control element in each is a ML8495 tube, which is held normally off by a rectifier A.C. voltage obtained from a power oscillator. A ramp function generator modulates this oscillator to turn the tube on, which charges the cables (Figs. 2 and 3). A voltage divider chain on the output is used for measurement and also as a reference point for comparison with the applied ramp function. Such a power supply may be used in place a pulse forming network (PFN) to drive a high power klystron amplifier, which typically requires voltages near -100kV at 10s of amps of current. Unlike an LC PFN, a switchmode power supply (SMPS) allows greater control over pulse duration while still allowing generation of longer duration pulses on the order of 10ms with constant output voltage by use of feedback regulation.
