Selling a Feeling: New Approaches Toward Recent Gay Chicano Authors and Their Audience Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Douglas Paul William Bush, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Ignacio Corona, Advisor Frederick Luis Aldama Fernando Unzueta Copyright by Douglas Paul William Bush 2013 Abstract Gay Chicano authors have been criticized for not forming the same type of strong literary identity and community as their Chicana feminist counterparts, a counterpublic that has given voice not only to themselves as authors, but also to countless readers who see themselves reflected in their texts. One of the strengths of the Chicana feminist movement is that they have not only produced their own works, but have made sense of them as well, creating a female-to-female tradition that was previously lacking. Instead of merely reiterating that gay Chicano authors have not formed this community and common identity, this dissertation instead turns the conversation toward the reader. Specifically, I move from how authors make sense of their texts and form community, to how readers may make sense of texts, and finally, to how readers form community. I limit this conversation to three authors in particular—Alex Espinoza, Rigoberto González, and Manuel Muñoz— whom I label the second generation of gay Chicano writers. In González, I combine the cognitive study of empathy and sympathy to examine how he constructs affective planes that pull the reader into feeling for and with the characters that he draws.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Cartographies of Estrangement: Transnational Female Identity and Literary Narratives between Italy and Eastern Europe A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Italian by Renata Redford 2016 © Copyright by Renata Redford 2016 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Cartographies of Estrangement: Transnational Female Identity and Literary Narratives between Italy and Eastern Europe by Renata Redford Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Lucia Re, Chair This dissertation investigates a vital body of women’s writing in Italian about the estranging effects of migration in order to emphasize the articulation of a literary discourse that undermines conventional depictions of the Eastern European female migrant. I provide evidence of the emergence in their work of a distinctly transnational approach to literary writing (narrative in particular), founded on a creative way of addressing questions of estrangement, the body, and memory. I consider the work of three authors, who have yet to be fully acknowledged in the Italian literary landscape: the Italophone writers Jarmila Očkayová (1955-present; Italo- Slovakian) and Ingrid Beatrice Coman (1971-present; Italo-Romanian living in Malta), and Marisa Madieri (1938-1996; Italo-Hungarian from Istria), whose native language was Italian. My analysis focuses on the stylistic, thematic, and structural elements that Očkayová, Coman and Madieri employ to engage with and

  • For the Homeland: Transnational Diasporic Nationalism and the Eurovision Song Contest
FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism. Key words: diaspora, former Yugoslavia, Eurovision Song Contest, music, nationalism, Sweden, transnationalism ii Acknowledgements Any project is fundamentally a piece of team work and my project has been no different. I would like to thank a number of people and organisations for their faith in me and the support they have given me: William Jenkins, my supervisor. Historicizing Maternity in Boccaccio’s Ninfale fiesolano and Decameron Kristen Renner Swann Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 2012 Kristen Renner Swann All rights reserved ABSTRACT Historicizing Maternity in Boccaccio’s Ninfale fiesolano and Decameron Kristen Renner Swann This dissertation explores the representation of maternity in two of Boccaccio’s works, the early idyllic poem, the Ninfale fiesolano, and the author’s later magnum opus, the Decameron, through readings in the social history of women and the family and medieval medical literature of obstetrics and gynecology. I create a dense historical context from which to examine the depiction of generative processes, maternity, and mother-child interactions in these works, allowing us to better understand the relationship between Boccaccio’s treatment of these subjects and the author’s larger stance on women and gender. In Chapter One, I explore Boccaccio’s uncommon interest in the events between conception and birth in the Ninfale fiesolano; I demonstrate the conformity of the Ninfale’s literary depictions of conception, pregnancy, and childbirth to the medical literature of obstetrics and gynecology and social practices in the late Middle Ages. In the second chapter, I explore how the Ninfale, traditionally seen as an idyllic, mythological poem, reflects the practices and ideologies of the normative form of family structure in fourteenth-century Tuscany, the patrilineage. I first show how the poem’s pervasive discourse on resemblance exposes, and undercuts, the importance of the paternal line; I then consider how Mensola’s joyful maternity – her beautifully rendered interactions with baby Pruneo - contains an implicit critique of the role and function of maternity in patrilineal society.

Blanchard, B.A., MSt. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2018 ABSTRACT EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FORERUNNERS OF VATICAN II: EARLY MODERN CATHOLIC REFORM AND THE SYNOD OF PISTOIA Shaun L. Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA An Examination of the Foundation and Activation of the Cooperation of Laity and Pastors in the Munus Docendi in Catechesis according to Canon 776 A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Canon Law Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor in Canon Law By Zabrina R. Decker Washington, D.C. 2016 An Examination of the Foundation and Activation of the Cooperation of Laity and Pastors in the Munus Docendi in Catechesis according to Canon 776 Zabrina R. Decker, J.C.D. Director: Rev. Robert J. Kaslyn, S.J., J.C.D. Canon 776 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law establishes the obligation of the pastor to provide catechetical formation and responsibility of laity to cooperate in such formation.1 This study uniquely focuses on the foundation and activation of the cooperation of the lay Christian faithful with pastors in catechesis. Such cooperation derives from baptism (both the right to witness to the gospel message [c. 211] and the correlative obligation of suitable preparation to exercise that right [c. 229]). Chapter one establishes baptism as the canonical foundation for incorporation, personhood and catechetical responsibility in the Church. From this constitutive basis, chapter two presents the ecclesiology of the sanctifying, governing and teaching (catechetical) mission of the Church for both laity and pastors. Conciliar, ecclesial and canonical definitions of catechesis are the focus of chapter three. Chapter four explores the definition of the lay Christian faithful as derived from their ontological status in baptism.
