Social Distortion Released Their First Album, Mommy's ETHAN MEYERS SOCIAL DISTORTION 9/7/17 [STILL ALIVE INTRO] SOCIAL DISTORTION RELEASED THEIR FIRST ALBUM, MOMMY’S LITTLE MONSTER, ALMOST 35 YEARS AGO, AND SINCE ITS RELEASE THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND GROW AS THEY MADE MORE AND MORE MUSIC WITH THEIR MOST RECENT ALBUM, HARD TIMES AND NURSERY RHYMES, BEING RELEASED IN 2011. THE BAND HAS EXPERIENCED MANY SETBACKS AND GONE THROUGH 21 MEMBERS IN THE 39 YEARS SINCE THE BAND WAS FORMED WITH FRONT MAN MIKE NESS AS THE ONLY REMAINING MEMBER FROM THE ORIGINAL LINEUP. IN THE BEGINNING THE BAND WAS MORE PUNK BASED AND AGGRESSIVE. [MORAL THREAT] THEIR FIRST ALBUM MOMMY’S LITTLE MONSTER DID NOT RECEIVE A LOT OF PRESS AND WAS NOT VERY POPULAR, AND THE SAME CAN BE SAID FOR THEIR SECOND ALBUM PRISON BOUND. THESE ALBUMS WERE VERY SIMILAR IN THEIR PRODUCTION AND STYLE WITH A MIX OF PUNK, COUNTRY, AND ROCK. [MOMMY’S LITTLE MONSTER] THIS IS A COMBINATION THAT SOCIAL DISTORTION CONTINUES TO USE IN SOME FORM TO THIS DAY. IN THE BEGINNING THIS MIX WAS ROUGH AND WAS MORE PUNK INFLUENCED. [ANTI-FASHION] IT WASN’T UNTIL THEIR SELF-TITLED THIRD ALBUM THAT THEY STARTED TO EXPERIENCE MAINSTREAM SUCCESS. THIS ALBUM CONTAINS SOME OF THE BAND'S MOST POPULAR SONGS INCLUDING STORY OF MY LIFE [STORY OF MY LIFE] AND BALL AND CHAIN. [BALL AND CHAIN] THESE SONGS WERE VERY POPULAR AT THE TIME OF THE ALBUM'S RELEASE AND SPENT A LONG TIME IN THE TOP CHARTS. THIS ALBUM ALSO INCLUDED A PUNKED OUT COVER OF RING OF FIRE BY JOHNNY CASH. [RING OF FIRE] SOCIAL DISTORTION IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST ROCK ALBUMS OF 1990 BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT COMBINED WESTERN ROCK WITH PUNK. [IT COULDA BEEN ME] THEY CONTINUED THEIR UPWARD TREND WITH THEIR 1992 ALBUM SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL. THIS ALBUM SURPASSED ALL OF SOCIAL DISTORTION’S PREVIOUS ALBUMS IN SALES, AND IT CONTAINED THEIR HIT SINGLE BAD LUCK. [BAD LUCK] THE BAND'S FIFTH ALBUM, WHITE LIGHT, WHITE HEAT, WHITE TRASH, RELEASED IN 1996 TOOK A DIFFERENT APPROACH THAN THEIR PREVIOUS ALBUMS WITH A LESS WESTERN AND MORE ALTERNATIVE STYLE. [DOWN ON THE WORLD AGAIN] THIS ALBUM CAME OFF AS MORE AGGRESSIVE WITH ONLY ONE SONG TITLED I WAS WRONG RECEIVING THE SAME AMOUNT OF POPULARITY AS THEIR TWO PREVIOUS ALBUMS. [I WAS WRONG] SOCIAL DISTORTION RETURNED TO A MORE LAID BACK VERSION OF ITS TRADITIONAL STYLE IN THEIR 2004 ALBUM SEX, LOVE AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. THIS ALBUM WAS MUCH LESS HEAVY THAN SOME OF THE BAND'S PREVIOUS WORK WITH A FOCUS ON BLUES AND ROCK. [WINNERS AND LOSERS] WHILE THIS ALBUM WAS NOT AS POPULAR AS SOME OF THE BAND’S PREVIOUS WORK, IT RECEIVED GOOD REVIEWS, AND SHOWED THAT THE BAND WAS STILL WORKING HARD AND IMPROVING. THE OPENING TRACK REACH FOR THE SKY WAS THE MOST POPULAR SONG ON THE ALBUM. [REACH FOR THE SKY] THEIR NEWEST ALBUM, HARD TIMES AND NURSERY RHYMES, WAS RELEASED IN 2011. IT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE BAND'S OLDER MUSIC IN THAT IT IS MUCH SLOWER AND MORE CALM. MOST OF THE SONGS ARE FOCUSED ON THEMES OF HEARTBREAK AND PAIN. [BAKERSFIELD] THE ALBUM IS MUCH LESS HEAVY AND HARSH. SOCIAL DISTORTION SEEMS TO HAVE CALMED WITH AGE WITHOUT COMPLETELY ABANDONING THEIR ORIGINAL STYLE AND MESSAGE. [ALONE AND FORSAKEN] MANY CRITICS BELIEVE THAT THIS ALBUM IS THE BAND'S BEST BECAUSE OF ITS LYRICS AND OVERALL LAYOUT AND FLOW. [DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH] SOCIAL DISTORTION IS RUMORED TO BE WORKING ON A NEW ALBUM SET TO BE RELEASED IN 2018. THEY CONTINUE TO TOUR AND PLAY LIVE SHOWS. IN THE BAND’S 39-YEAR CAREER THEY HAVE MADE A LOT OF MUSIC AND CONTINUE TO GET BETTER WITH AGE. [MACHINE GUN BLUES OUTRO?] .

  • THE BONES Are Back in the Ring with Another Swing! Is It Really Already
THE BONES are back in the ring with another swing! Is it really already five years ago since Sweden’s finest Punk’n’Roll outfit took over our stereos with „Burnout Boulevard“? Apparently it is, but the good news is: the wait is over. On „Monkeys With Guns“, the fifth studio album in their enduring career, THE BONES are back blazing with 15 (17 on the Limited Edition and LP) blistering, hard hitting new tracks of perfect Punk’n’Roll marriage material made in hell. In our case, hell is a lovely little harbour-town called Karlskrona in the Southwest of Sweden. That’s where it all started out for THE BONES back in 1993. Back then singer/guitarist Beef Bonanza, along with his brother Spooky Fred and bassist Dollar Ace, were working on their first demos, which already included soon-to-be-classics like ‘I Met Elvis At The Nudybar’ and ‘Monsters Prefer Blondes’. When singer/guitar-slinger Marcus „Boner“ Petersson entered the picture in 1996 things began to speed up. Sharing a mutual love for high energetic punk and rock music in the vein of The Ramones and Motörhead and 50s and 60s rock’n’roll, THE BONES were always influenced by the melodic qualities of bands such as The Bay City Rollers and The Barracudas as well. After self-releasing „The Horrorway EP“ in 1997 german punk rock label I Used To Fuck People Like You In Prison Records caught an eye on the ear-catching qualities of THE BONES. Following two more EPs, „Rock n' Roll Race“ and „Six Feet Down, Two Fingers Up“ the swedes finally released their adeptly titled debut album „Screwed, Blued & Tattooed“ in 2000 to critical acclaim.

THE GENRE FORMERLY KNOWN AS “PUNK”: A QPOC’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE SCENE Shane Zackery Scripps College Claremont CA, 91711 1 THE GENRE FORMERLY KNOWN AS “PUNK”: A QPOC’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE SCENE Abstract This video is a visual representation of the frustrations that I suffered from when I, a queer, gender non-conforming, person of color, went to “pasty normals” (a term defined by Jose Esteban Munoz to describe normative, non-exotic individuals) to get a definition of what Punk meant and where I fit into it. In this video, I personify the Punk music movement. Through my actions, I depart from the grainy, low-quality, amateur aesthetics of the Punk film and music genres and create a new world where the Queer Person of Color defines Punk. In the piece, Punk definitively says, “Don’t try to define me. Shut up and leave me to rest.” 2 1 Conceptualization My project will be an experimental performance video that incorporates monologues, performances, visual sound elements, and still and moving images.

  • The Legendary Stooges Axeman, 1948-2009: He Didn't Just Play the Guitar
The legendary Stooges axeman, 1948-2009: he didn't just play the guitar. BY TIM "NAPALM" STEGALL The first thing you noticed, after seeing the perfect picture of teenage delinquency in quartet form on the cover (and how much the band depicted resembles a prehistoric Ramones, if you're of a certain age), was the sound: Corrosive, brittle, brassy, seemingly untamed. It was the sound of an electric guitar being punished more than played. And the noise got particularly nasty once Mr. Guitar Flogger stepped on his wah-wah pedal. Because unlike whenever Jimi Hendrix stepped on a wah, this guitar didn't talk. It snarled and spat and attacked like a cobra. As the six string engine that drove The Stooges, Ron Asheton didn't play guitar. He played the amp. And the fuzztone. And the wah-wah pedal. In the process, he didn't just give singer Iggy Pop a sonic playground in which he could run riot and push the boundaries of then-acceptable rock stagecraft. ("Ron provided the ammo," says Rolling Stone Senior Writer David Fricke. "Iggy pulled the trigger.") Ron Asheton also changed the way rock 'n' roll was played and energized a few generations to pick up guitars themselves, creating several subgenres in the process. Ron Asheton was found dead in the wee hours of January 6, 2009, in the Ann Arbor home he and brother Scott (The Stooges' drummer) and sister Kathy (muse to a few late Sixties Detroit rockers and lyrical inspiration for The Stooges' classic "TV Eye") grew up in after the family relocated from the guitarist's native Washington, DC.
