When "Soundings" first aired as an addition to the UUltimate Jazz Experience", on January 12, 1989, it was a mixture of music and interviews with the artists. On September 28, 1989, the show received its own program in the 10 am to 12 pm slot so it could focus exclusively on the artist interviews.
