In his formal plan for the institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Folklife Studies Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world of science and scholarship. • Wedding Guidelines
Wedding Guidelines Congratulations on your engagement! We are pleased that you have selected St. Joseph Parish to be a part of your special day. We want to help you plan a wedding ceremony that is spiritual and sacramental in accordance with the Catholic belief that marriage is a lifelong commitment and that it is a sacrament. Parish Registration: The exchange of wedding vows in the Catholic Church is a sacrament (Holy Matrimony) when it is between two baptized Christians. All sacraments, including marriage, are celebrated in the presence of a faith community. Also, registration as a member of our faith community signifies your commitment to practicing the Catholic faith which includes regular attendance at Sunday celebrations of the Eucharist, receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis, and living other basics of the Catholic faith. For these reasons, we require that at least one member of the engaged couple (or one of their parents) be a registered parishioner at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Children of St. Joseph’s parishioners who are members of another parish must provide us with a letter showing that we have that parish’s permission to perform their marriage. Non-parishioners can also be married here at St. Joseph Parish but either the bride or the groom must be a registered member at a Catholic parish and must receive permission from that parish to hold the wedding here. Days and Times of Weddings: Wedding ceremonies may take place at St. Joseph Parish on Friday or on Saturday. To accommodate liturgical schedules, Saturday weddings can be held at 1:00 in the afternoon or earlier.
