Beginning as a member of George Heinrich Langsdorff's scientific expedition to Minas Gerais in 1821, and then on his own, Rugendas traveled widely in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Peru. His best-known published work is the monumental four-volume set, Malerische Reise in Brasilien (1827-1835). The Rugendas collection consists of 192 letters and 4 poems written to Rugendas by four of his South American artist friends who shared his passion for the country and culture of Argentina. Born in Augsburg (present-day Germany) on Mar. 29, 1802, and raised in a family of renowned painters and engravers, Rugendas was provided with a strong academic artistic foundation, training in father's art school and studying under the painter Albrecht Adam and then under Lorenz Quaglio at the Academy of Arts in Munich. -

The Brazilian Campos in Nineteenth-Century Landscape Art André S. Bailão Summary The mosaic of tropical grasslands, savannahs, and woodlands in the Brazilian Highlands, commonly called campos in the early nineteenth century and Cerrado nowadays, was depicted by European traveling artists and naturalists following new modes of visualization in arts and sciences, in dialogue with Alexander von Humboldt. Illustrations in travel albums presented landscapes following sensorial experiences from the journeys and physiognomic and phytogeographic features studied in the field. They document the transformations of the territory by the advancing settler colonization, with a strong focus on cattle ranching, hunting, and burning of the grasslands. Traveling naturalists and artists took advantage of the opening of Brazilian borders in 1808 by the Portuguese Crown, which moved to Rio de Janeiro during the Napoleonic Wars. They were interested in describing, botanizing, and collecting in a country that remained mostly unknown outside the Portuguese Empire. Most travelers remained on the coast, especially in Rio de Janeiro, which resulted in multiple accounts and images of the surrounding rainforests and coastal landscapes. The inner Highlands (planalto) of Central Brazil were more difficult to reach due to long distances and travel conditions but some visited the mining districts, where the coastal rainforests (Mata Atlântica) change into drier vegetations as people advance towards the interior. Asmall mammal study was carried out in Pampanao valley, Sumidouro, State ofRio de Janeiro, Brazil,from June 1991 to July 1996. The area was characterised by small rmal propelties with vegetable plantations, pasture lands and small forest fragments. Small mammals were captured in seven line transects along the valley. Eleven small mammal species were captured: the didelphid marsupials Didelphis aurita, Philander !renata and Monodelphis americana, and the rodents Nectomys squamipes, Akodol/ cursor, OligOlyzomys nigripes, Bolomys lasiurus, Oecomys con color (Sigmodontinae), Rattus rattus (Murinae), Proechimys iheringi and Euryzygo matomys guiara (Echimyidae). The heterogeneous habitat configuration probably allowed the occurrence of marsupials and more rodent species when compared to studies in monocu!ture areas. KEY WORDS. marsupials, rodents, cultivated areas, Brazil The replacement of natural habitats by cultivated areas has been changing the structure ofanimal and plant communities, chiefly in relation to the composition and abundance ofspecies. Mammals playa special role in these disturbed areas and are considered good indicators of the degree of disturbance (SOULE & WILCOX 1980). Also some opportunistic species, such as herbivore and graminivorous rodents, might become agricultural plagues with extreme population peaks (MUTZE 1990; GALANTE & CASSINI 1994). Furthermore, in rural areas, many small mammals are involved in the cycles of human parasites acting as natural reservoirs (MELLO 1991; REY 1993; DIOUTAIUTI el of. 1995). The ability to understand changes in natural populations due to human disturbance is hampered by the absence of long-term studies. -

Hercules Florence, da imagem pictórica à imagem técnica: os anos decisivos1 Boris Kossoy Professor Titular do Departamento de Jornalismo e Editoração da Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo. Resumo O objetivo desta apresentação é o de trazer uma contribuição à história das mentalidades, a partir da análise crítica da obra de Hercule Florence (1804-1879), desenvolvida nas décadas de 1820 e 1830. Trata-se do período em que participou da Expedição Langsdorff na qualidade de desenhista e cartógrafo, e os anos imediatamente seguintes quando, já radicado na Vila de São Carlos (Campinas), deu início ás suas pesquisas e descobertas em diferentes campos da ciência e da técnica. Uma de suas investigações precursoras, iniciada em 1833, culminou na descoberta de um processo fotográfico; uma descoberta pioneira no Brasil e nas Américas, conforme comprovamos ainda nos anos de 1970, junto aos meios acadêmicos e institucionais no Brasil, EUA e Europa. A contínua difusão desta descoberta através de cursos e eventos nacionais e internacionais possibilitou resgatar tal fato do esquecimento. Independentemente da data, sua personalidade e suas realizações em vários campos da ciência, da técnica e das artes deveriam ser objeto de maiores investigações e reflexões. E também de uma mais efetiva difusão. Nada mais oportuno que retomar a obra de Hercule Florence dentro do tema “Comunicação, Acontecimento e Memória”, no contexto deste VII Colóquio Brasil-França de Ciências da Comunicação e da Informação.
