It’s summertime, after all, and while the living may not exactly be “easy,” it’s certainly a lot more relaxed than during the season or school year. Such is the kind of cross-fertilization for which festivals are known, and one of the reasons they are such ideal settings for rising artists. Sometimes the trainees are fully integrated into the schedule, such as at the Santa Fe Opera, where young artists are featured, often in leading roles. Sometimes they work independently of the main event, such as at Tanglewood, where the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, for instance, is comprised entirely of TMC Fellows and plays its own concerts, alongside the center-stage Boston Symphony Orchestra (whose members form much of the faculty).

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Ruby Yang When I traveled to China in 1986, you couldn’t mention the word “Taiwan” without rousing suspicion you might be a spy. The Chinese considered their Vietnamese neighbors enemies, and they still couldn’t forgive the Japanese for their invasion of Nanking – five decades earlier. In such an environment, the idea of bringing young people from different Asian countries together to play music seemed little more than a Quixotic dream. But that is exactly what Richard Pontzious and the late Yehudi Menuhin did when they set up the Asian Youth Orchestra. Last year, I was able to witness first hand just how successful this dream has become when I spent the summer with the Asian Youth Orchestra filming this documentary. It was inspiring for me to see the orchestra’s dedicated artist faculty working together with talented young musicians from all over Asia to create a strong community of trusted friends.

My formal singing lessons began at the age of 16 and it soon became clear that making music, singing and performing were going to be my main goals in life. In 2002 I was awarded a place on the undergraduate course at the Royal College of Music in London, where I was taught by Margaret Cable, Marie McLaughlin and from 2004, Lillian Watson. Miss Watson in particular has been a huge influence upon my early career and I developed hugely under her support and guidance. I am now looking forward to continuing my studies having been offered a scholarship at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School. Over the last four years I have had the opportunity to sing in masterclasses for musicians including Malcolm Martineau, Michael Chance, Jane Manning, Roger Vignoles, Dame Malvina Major, Sarah Walker, David Owen Norris, Robin Bowman and Laura Sartri. Specifically over the last two years I have had some fantastic musical experiences including a performance of Bach’s B Minor Mass with Peter Schreier, concerts with the Swedish National Orchestra (Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra), and this summer had the opportunity to tour Asia (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan) with the Asian Youth Orchestra. My next challenges involve performances with Sir Charles Mackerras and also the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Okko Kamu.

    RICHARD PONTZIUS Founder / Artistic Director and Conductor Asian Youth Orchestra Richard Pontzious founded Hong Kong’s Asian Youth Orchestra in 1987 with the distinguished violinist, conductor and humanitarian Yehudi Menuhin. The idea for the creation of an orchestra in Hong Kong that would unite the region and celebrate the talents of East Asia’s brightest young musicians came as the result of Mr. Pontzious’ work as conductor, writer, teacher and mentor in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan. Critics have called AYO astonishing (Seattle Post Intelligencer) and the finest among youth orchestras around the world (San Francisco Chronicle). In 2010 the Orchestra was awarded Japan’s Praemium Imperiale Grant for Young Artists, a global arts prize, and just this year Mr. Pontzious was named an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Mr. Pontzious’ work with the Asian Youth Orchestra has led to extraordinary collaborations with Yehudi Menuhin, Sergiu Comissiona, James Judd, Wang Jian, Yo-Yo Ma, Alisa Weilerstein, Elmar Oliveira, Gidon Kremer, Elly Ameling, Cho-Liang Lin, Gil Shaham, Young Uck Kim, Stefan Jackiw, Jean Luis Steuerman and Alicia de Larrocha. He was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the Asian Youth Orchestra in 2002, at the urging of Sergiu Comissiona. Recent tours with AYO have included live television and radio broadcasts from the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as well as sellout performances in Beijing’s National Centre for Performing Arts, Shanghai’s Oriental Arts Centre, the Xian Concert Hall, Kuala Lumpur’s Dewan Petronas Filharmonik, Singapore’s Esplanade Concert Hall, Hanoi’s historic Opera House, marking its 100th anniversary, Taipei’s National Concert Hall and Tokyo’s Opera City Concert Hall.

    About the Shanghai Orchestra Academy 2018 Zarin Mehta Fellows Renchao Yu, 24, was born in Shanghai, China. Mr. Yu studies with Vera Tsu Weiling at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and with Pei Li at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA). He was appointed concertmaster of the Shanghai Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and Shanghai City Symphony Orchestra. In 2014 he joined the Asian Youth Orchestra, with whom he toured. In 2018 he joined the Youth Music Culture Guangzhou and he was the concertmaster of the YMCG Symphony Orchestra. As a student at the SOA, he has performed with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He took lessons with New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Frank Huang, Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, and Assistant Concertmaster Michelle Kim; Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley; and Stefan Wagner, Roland Greutter, Eduard Grach, Kevork Mardirossian, Lucie Robert, Kathleen Winkler, Mayumi Fujikawa, Alexander Barantschik, Weigang Li, and Feng Ning. Kuan Liu, 26, was born in Hubei Province, China. Mr. Liu studied viola with Xidi Shen at the middle school affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Roberto Diaz and Michael Tree. He served as principal viola of the Shanghai Conservatory Symphony Orchestra from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 he attended the Geneva Conservatory of Music as an exchange student, studying with Matthias Buchholz. As a student at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA), he has performed with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra, among others.

He also studied music composition with Ricardo Lorenz and James Winn. Daniel’s compositions have been performed throughout the U.S., and he has been commissioned by the Verdehr Trio, Jackson Symphony, Livingston Symphony, and Mason Orchestral Society, among others. Acclaimed as “beautifully expressive,” violinist Fangye Sun has concertized in Asia, Europe, and North America, appearing as a soloist with numerous orchestras.

Asia’s premier pre-professional orchestra, the ensemble features 107 young musicians from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, who convene during the summer for a demanding schedule of rehearsals and international touring. Co-founder and artistic director Richard Pontzious conducts the orchestra for Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, Strauss’ Don Juan, and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Beethoven’s finely wrought and exuberant Seventh Symphony premiered in 1813 during a fertile creative period for the composer. The inventive orchestrations in Don Juan, Strauss’ technically Cal Performances / Asian Youth Orchestra with Sarah Chang, page 2 demanding orchestral tone poem, launched the composer’s career after its premiere in 1889. Sibelius’ lyrical and virtuosic Violin Concerto (1904, revised 1905), his only concerto, has become of the most popular violin concertos composed in the 20th century.
