Jajannathaya Te Namah Sadaraniya Namaskar. We have ended the year 2018 in a blaze loaded with well-scheduled calendar events, special events, lectures and discourses by several invited eminent scholarly personalities, cultural activities and Vidya Vikas school events, all precisely catered for the Hindu community of D/FW area and beyond, promoting Hindu tradition, culture and history. Maintenance of Temple facility became major priority with twenty five plus years of serving to the community, accommodating to the sigmoidal growth and demand of the Hindu communities around the metropolis. The DFW Hindu temple has remained as the mother temple, visited boundlessly not only by Hindu devotees but also by all area schools & campuses as a resource for learning Hindu religion & traditions. Regular Temple tours have served to these needs, facilitating the inter-faith education, gained increased focus of local area TV channels as the “the epicenter” of Hindu religion, culture and traditions. Together, these services have amplified the demand for persistent maintenance, upgrading and improvisation on both structural and infrastructural front, implementing for a model Hindu religious organization in the USA. I stay privileged, honored and blessed interacting and looking over such opportunities serving as the first volunteer under the banner of the President for DFW Hindu Temple for 2018. We have celebrated all events specific to our in the unique way with you devotees representing from different communities. Beside the calendar events, some of the special events that highlighted the year were ‘Shree Jagannatha Kathamrita’ signifying ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannatha Mahatmya’’ puja presided by, none other than, His Excellency, the King, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb of Puri, the sole primary hereditary Sevaka of Prabhu Jagannatha along with other eminent dignitary speakers, Pujya Paramahamsa Prajnanananda Maharaj of Kriya International and Pujya Sarveshananda Maharaj of Chinmaya Mission, Dallas. Then “Shree Bhagwat Katha” by Sri Mridul Krishna Goswami Ji including the release of 12th century saint poet, Sri ’s ‘Shri Gita Govindam’ bhajan CD first time ever for Prabhu jagannatha Sangeeta during Katha. The visit of ‘Brahmrishi Sri Gurudev’ twice during the year from Sri Brahmrishi , has blessed the life of several devotees including mine in most spiritual way. Then the ‘Anammacharya keerthans’ by SVASA group complementing the Srinivas Kalyanam celebration was one of the most well- crafted collaboration producing high quality event while enriching temple devotee community. Elaboration of ‘’ and ‘ Milan’ celebration in much grander way was an addition to the existing calendar event. The compelling Bhajan presentation & explanation of 15th century ‘Saint Poet Kavir’ by the Academy award and Padma Shri award achiever Sri Prahlad Singh Tipanya in folk style and the classical ‘ solo performance by Mastero Harshad Kanetkarji were significant proliferation to represent few of the best of our classic cultural heritage. Here, I must emphasize that your continued commitment and generous financial and volunteer support remain as the back bone to successful facilitation for events of such scope and scale. As said earlier, while we do take much pride on and principles, it becomes an autonomous responsibility to upraise and sustain our religious best and cultural traditions, I request each one of you to graciously continue the support for all years to come. Please encourage everyone beyond your family and friends to participate in all Temple events and cherish such auspicious moments. Our Priests have unique expertise catering to Deities from most parts of India, always eager to serve the religious needs of our devotees. My salute to them. I sincerely appreciate my great team of Office bearers, Executive committee, Board of Trustees and front desk managers for working effortlessly together to serve devotees. Let us keep up our effort to mark our temple the best representation of our religious and cultural heritage. My humble request to each one of you to stay responsible for the best interest of DFW Hindu Temple. My best regards, Dr. Swati Tripathy President 2018

Dear Devotees: Namaskar, The year 2018, has flown-by and is coming to an end, we had lots of successful events and accomplishments for the temple under the leadership of Smt. Swati Tripathy. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your time, dedication and generous donations. Next year we have planned several events that everyone is sure to enjoy. Let us all come and help our new incoming president Smt. Kusum Masters to have a successful 2019. Have a Happy Holidays and have a Happy New Year! Jai Shri Krishna! Khemchand J. Nangrani 4 Chairman, Board of Trustees, 2018 Navagrahas and their Santhi Puja

On sunny days we tend to be in higher spirits, and tend to be more active. On a rainy days, more people feel gloomy inside, perhaps matching the weather outside. Near full moon, even the waters in the oceans tend to rise, just the opposite being true near the new moon; and similarly with the alignment or conjunction of other planets. Certainly the scientific thinkers among us know it all as the effects of “gravity”. The effect of “planets” in our life is undeniable.

Navagrahas as planets: Our Vedic seers (“”s) were some of the first to recognize the effects of “Grahas” on our conduct, being, and life, in general. The Navagrahas are : Aditya (Sun, the presider), Chandra (Moon, the controller), Mangala (Mars, the executor), Budha (Mercury, the peace-keeper), (Jupiter, the advisor), Sukra (Venus, the grantor of prosperity), Sani (Saturn the savior, from evil of course), Rahu (NOT Neptune, but grantor of comfortable longevity), and Ketu (NOT Pluto, but grantor of all round well-being)…. Mostly matching the planets in our solar system.

5 Though the use of English language in Vedic (spiritual) transactions has brought about some ease and uniformity of understanding among all; it has also put severe restrictions in proper understanding of the Vedic scripts. The case in point: the word “Graha”; translated as “Planet”. Contradictions arise immediately. We (at least the scientists among us) know that the sun and moon are not planets at all. Thus when we switched in to the English language, we could claim our knew about “planets”; but got more into confusion thereafter. Another contradiction is that the list of planets does not include (Earth). Certainly the scientists among us believe the Rishis could not have known much.

This understanding gets corrected when we note that “Graha” (is an ancient, Vedic word in ) are more than “planets” (a word that came much later in the English language). “Graha” represents “grahan karne vale”, (in ) understanders or assessors. The “Navagraha” are living, divine entities that possess the power triumvirates of icha, kriya, and gnana (loosely powers to wish, act, and fulfil/know). So, it is important to understand that Aditya, the presider is NOT the physical sun in the sky; but the Prajapathi (Vedic Father of creation). All the other “Grahas” are the powers through which He controls our well- being, and spiritual and material progress. Planets are born of Sun, alright! … Other helpful parallels are just incidental…. Graha are certainly more than the planetary matter seen floating in the skies.

Aditya represents the life force, intelligence and prosperity; Chandra controls the mind and emotions (helps cool the waters of the mind); Mangala gives courage and confidence; Budha is held responsible for imparting learning and analytics; Guru symbolizes wisdom and right knowledge holding keys to success; Sukra grants desires, wealth and beauty; Sani represents austerity, discipline and resilience; Rahu and Ketu represent the choice of the karmic vasanas, conflicts, and effects from prior lives.

Navagraha Santhi puja: For the puja, offerings are made to the nine grahas. It is important to understand that we are born under some constellational position (with a Kundali to support it). It is also true that the presider constantly acts through us, expending His energies in accordance with the progress we make (in life). Peace is the essential pre- requisite for all progress and happiness. The performance of Navagraha Santhi puja is generally done under the guidance of a trained Purohita. The Purohita must essentially know which of the powers be invoked and propitiated in performance of the Puja. Alleviation of the effect of misbalanced energies, as seen through astrological conditions of sadhakas (faithful ones) or simply their well-being could be the objective for the Puja.

The Puja itself is generally performed through the ritualistic offering of grains, flowers, havyams (honey, , rice etc in the Homam or fire), fruits, , betel leaves, vastrams (garments), etc. Sometimes Pujas invoking particular grahas are undertaken with particular outcomes in mind (sankalpa’a). Performance of the Navagraha Santhi Puja alleviates the ill-effects of Dasha-doshas (confluence of negative energy flows, resulting from planetary tracks/ conjunctions /positions), bestows health, wealth, prosperity, good luck, repute through able progeny etc. Jay Jayakumar E C Member

8 9 Dear Devotees of Lord Shiva,

It gives me great pleasure to be able to send this inlakitation to you all. Invitation to attend the Sri Shiva Sahasra Spatika Linga shodasa Aavarana Pooja!! And Shivaratri Pooja.

Our temple plans to organize the second-ever of this Pooja during Mar 1,2 and 3 weekend. This Puja is a such a rare one but our Sri Mahalakshmi Temple in Irving, aka ekta mandir, is giving us the second opportunity to participate in such a rare occasion this year. If you want to EXPERIENCE the SUPREME SPLENDOUR of one thousand one hundred and sixteen SPATIKA LINGAS (which we have obtained from the Himalayas) , you need to see them all BEFORE the start of the puja on Friday when there is not a single flower petal on any of the Lingas. For you to have that opportunity, you should be in the temple by 6 pm Friday. The sight is so unique I cannot find a meaningful comparison. After 6.15 pm, the Pooja starts and that means flowers will be offered to these Lingas progressively till about 9 p.m. During this time, we will be installing (Aavaahanam)all these 1116 Spatika Lingas. With flowers, the Spatika Lingas provide a different view. Surely, not to be missed. On sat Mar 2, we will start Sri Mahanyasam at 8.30 am. Following that, we will chant Sri Rudram eleven times (Ekadashini Rudra japam) and complete it by about noon time. After a short mid-day lunch break, we will have Naadhopaasanaa/Nrtyopaasanaa. Shiva as Nataraja is the king of Dances. Shiva is Ardhanaareeshwara. Kumari Vaishnavi Rajagopalan will bring out the magnificent details of Ardhanaaree and also dance to some other Shiva songs. She will be followed by sishyas of Smt Bhuvana Venkataraman and Sri Chintan Patel. Then there will be dances by the two themselves. They will dance to several famous Shiva songs and offer respects to Sri Nandi . A group of eminent singers led by Smt Savitha Namuduri will sing the five songs composed by the erudite scholar, supreme devotee and one of the great Trinity of Composers, Sri Muthuswami Dikshithar’s Pancha Bhootha Kshetra Linga Krithis. The group will then sing Sri Oothukadu Venkata Kavi’s (OVK) “Aalaavadhu ennaalo” which song includes the names of all the 63 Naayanmaars (Shiva Bhaktas of high order). The great composer asks “ when will I be able to become the servant of the servants of the devotees of Lord Shiva?”

The Saturday program will conclude by about 5/5.30 pm. For those interested, the Pancha Bhootha Kshetras are as follows: Kancheepuram (Prithvi=Land), Thiru Aanaikka Jambukeshwara sthalam (Ap=water). Sri Kalahasti (=wind), Thiru Annamalai (Thejas=Fire), Chidambaram (Aakaasham=space).

On Sunday Mar 3, we will have Rudra Homam, Vasordhaara, maha abhishekam, Puja and Shivji Aarathi before the Mahamangala Aarathi of the temple. From 8.30 am till 12.30 pm.

The MahaSivaratri Puja on Mar 4 Monday. Rudra Ekadashini Japam (chanting of Rudram eleven times) from 6 pm to 9 pm. Aarathi at 9.00 pm and then at 12 midnight

All the best. May God be with us all, Krishna Murthy
