    June 2017 The Church We Didn’t Choose The following article has been written by Jon Bloom, co-founder of the Desiring God website. Further articles can be found on www.desiringgod.org It can be really hard to love the church. Every Christian, who’s been one for very long, knows this. The earthly church has always been a motley crew. It’s never been ideal. The New Testament exists because churches, to differing degrees, have always been a mess — a glorious mess of saints still polluted by remaining sin, affected by defective genes, brains, and bodies, and influenced by life-shaping pasts. This mess rarely looks glorious to us up close. It looks like a lot of sin and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears invested into a lot of futility. It often looks like something we’d rather escape than join. But this is the way it’s supposed to be. Because the mess is what draws out the one thing that advances the church’s mission more than anything else. And this one thing is why we must not, for selfish reasons, leave the church. Jesus’ very first disciples didn’t get to choose each other. Jesus chose them (John 15:16). They just found themselves thrown together. The very next generation of early Christians didn’t get to choose each other either. They too were thrown together with others they likely wouldn’t have chosen: Palestinian and Hellenistic Jews, Jews and Gentiles, educated and uneducated, slaves and slave owners, impoverished and aristocrats, former zealots and former tax collectors, former prostitutes and former Pharisees.

    The Concept of Identity in the East Midlands of England NATALIE BRABER Investigating feelings of identity in East Midlands adolescents Introduction When considering dialectal variation in the UK, linguists have frequently considered the North/South divide and the linguistic markers separating the two regions (see for example Trudgill, 1999; Wells, 1986). But it has been noted that this is not a straightforward division (e.g. Beal, 2008; Goodey, Gold, Duffett & Spencer, 1971; Montgomery, 2007; Wales, 2002). There are clear stereotypes for the North and South – but how do areas like the East Midlands fit into the picture? The boundaries between North and South are defined in different ways. Beal’s linguistic North does not include the East Midlands (Beal, 2008: 124- 5), neither does Wales’ (2002: 48). Trudgill states that in traditional dialectology the East Midlands area falls under ‘Central’ dialects, which come under the ‘Southern’ branch, but in modern dialectology it falls in the ‘North’. Hughes, Trudgill and Watt (2005: 70) contains a map which has the East Midlands in the North. Linguistically, the question has been raised whether there is a clear North/South boundary (see for example Upton (2012) where it is proposed that it is a transition zone). This paper revisits this question from the point of view of young people living in the East Midlands, to examine their sense of identity and whether this cultural divide is salient to them. The East Midlands is a problematic area in its definition geographically, and people may have difficulty in relating this to their own sense of identity.

    ISSUE 29 Quarterly Journal - December 2018 NEWS COMMENT and ANALYSIS on SPINOUTS from UK HEIs Playing to one’s strengths As we have frequently remarked, and as the figures given in our Quarterly Journals demonstrate, spinout activity—new spinouts created, investment, exits - is highly concentrated in the South East of England. While universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial and UCL, go from strength to strength, making the most of their favourable environment - business, technology, investment - outside the ‘golden triangle’ it is not possible for universities to replicate the same conditions, and they must identify their own strengths and put them to maximum effect. We have two examples in this issue: Univeresity of Birmingham Enterprise’s account of the commercialisation collaboration between eight Midlands universities (p17), and our Spotlight feature on Swansea University (p15), which has evolved a technology transfer model tailored specifically to its own circumstances. Encouragingly, the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) currently under development acknowledges this issue, and has set out to group universities in clusters, so that universities in the most favoured environments can be assessed against their peers, and others judged by criteria more relevant to their own environments; see our report on p13. Since the publication of our previous Quarterly Journal, the sale of Spinouts UK to Beauhurst has been completed. Henry Whorwood of Beauhurst explains what this means in terms of tracking and profiling spinout companies on p8. There will be a transitional handover period, with Spinouts UK founder and editor Jonathan Harris continuing to produce the Quarterly Journals, while Beauhurst gradually takes over the data collection activities.

NEXOR, the international provider of mission-critical messaging and directory products, today announced its Messageware Directory Boundary Agent (DBA) which allows Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory systems to connect securely into meta-directories and the Internet, without compromising data privacy. The recent emergence of Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) and Directory Enabled Networks (DEN) means that corporate networks have grown increasingly dependent upon their directory infrastructures. At the same time, the lack of a common security model for directory application software has, until now, exposed most organisations to security risks. NEXOR's DBA at last provides directory administrators with an application-level firewall which enables them to connect two separate networks or administrative domains (eg Internet and Intranet) via special-purpose protocol handlers (or 'proxies') at the network and an administrative boundary domain. DBA achieves this by mediating access to meta-directory systems across a network domain boundary, using the LDAP protocol. In order to guarantee the security of the firewall technology in its new DBA, NEXOR has chosen to incorporate the TABARDIUM software licenced from the UK Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA). This has been pre-evaluated to the Security Assurance level ITSEC E3, on behalf of DERA, by a Certified Licensed Evaluation Facility.
