Tinder-Ing Desire: the Circuit of Culture, Gamified Dating and Creating Desirable Selves
Tinder-ing Desire: The Circuit of Culture, Gamified Dating and Creating Desirable Selves Tanya F. Oishi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: LeiLani Nishime, Chair Ralina Joseph Carmen Gonzalez Program Authorized to Offer Degree Communication 2 ©Copyright 2019 Tanya F. Oishi 3 University of Washington Abstract Tinder-ing Desire: Tanya F. Oishi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: LeiLani Nishime Communication This dissertation starts at intersection of race, gender, and technology, all of which will be discussed in depth throughout this project, and the fluid state of being constituted and being undone by one another. It is in this state of vulnerability that relationships are initiated, through technology that these relationships are shaped and facilitated, and within the constraints of social expectations that these interactions are able/allowed to occur (Duck, 2011). As life becomes more mediated and interactions more facilitated through technological means, focusing on relationships facilitated through dating apps is illustrative of the ways in which mobile technologies are changing the way we communicate with one another. The introduction provides the theoretical overview of the literature off of which the rest of the dissertation builds its arguments: the importance of interpersonal connections, the positionality of Asian men in the U.S., and the mutual shaping of society and technology, as well 4 as a justification for a mixed methodological approach to these areas of inquiry. The second chapter looks at the subreddit r/Tinder Profile Review Week thread to see how individuals seek feedback on creating a desirable self and describes how these impression management strategies of Asian men differ from the group which is comprised predominantly by white men. -

It is also an exploration of the similarities between Queer Black Women and Black Women and how they interact with femininity and masculinity, patriarchy, and heteronormativity. Claiming digital space through podcasting, it honors the power of counter narratives by employing autoethnographical story telling. -

Well, if the book in question is like all of the existing books out there, in that it offers the opinion of a single author...the answer is we don't need another book on relationships – at least like that. What we do need is a book on relationships that takes a new approach. Thankfully, the book you are about to read represents a new way of writing about relationships. Up to this point, if you wanted to learn about relationships the most common way to do so was to read a traditional self-help or advice book, read an advice page on the Internet, or pick up a magazine from the check-out line at the store. Other options, though largely underutilized, would be to take a college course on relationships or read the hundreds of scientific articles that relationship scholars publish annually in academic journals. -

Online Dating
Online Dating Americans who are seeking romance use the internet to help them in their search, but there is still widespread public concern about the safety of online dating March 5, 2006 Mary Madden, Research Specialist Amanda Lenhart, Senior Research Specialist PEW INTERNET & AMERICAN LIFE PROJECT 1615 L ST., NW – SUITE 700 WASHINGTON, D.C. 20036 202-419-4500 http://www.pewinternet.org/ Summary of Findings Most online Americans who are single and looking for dates have used the internet to pursue their romantic interests and millions more Americans know people who have tried and succeeded at online dating. In a new survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, there are two central findings that illustrate how important the internet has become for those seeking romance in 21st Century America: First, among the relatively small and active cohort of 10 million internet users who say they are currently single and looking for romantic partners, 74% say they have used the internet in one way or another to further their romantic interests. Second, there is relatively broad public contact with the online dating world because significant numbers of Americans personally know others who have tried and succeeded at online dating. Some 15% of those in this survey of the general public – representing about 30 million Americans – say they know someone who has been in a long-term relationship or married someone they met online. Twice as many know someone who has at least dabbled in the online dating scene. 31% of American adults—63 million people—say they know someone who has used a dating website. -

Matrimonial Shows on Turkish Television Channels
BUJSS 9/1 (2016), 102-117 “EVERYBODY SHOULD WITNESS OUR HAPPINESS”: MATRIMONIAL SHOWS ON TURKISH TELEVISION CHANNELS 1 Erdem Güven 2 İlkay Kanık ABSTRACT In every culture and society, rituals of marriage are changing depending on different traditions and customs. Modernization and the developments in the mass media, naturally changed or at least made these customs and traditions compatible with the changing situation. In Turkish culture, the first step of the arranged (family-initiated) marriages – asking a family to give their daughters as a bride (kız isteme)– is more invisible and “between the members of the two families” (aile arasında). Kız isteme ritual is also an important phase in the love marriages. Approbation of family and the society is important not only in arranged marriages, but also in love marriages. Although, the ceremony is mostly invisible and between the members of the families of the bride and the groom, it became an important “subject of rumor” especially among women. Neighbors of the bride and the groom and relatives always eager to learn the details about the groom and bride, as well as about the ceremony itself. Today, matrimonial shows on Turkish televisions arose from this curiosity and turning it into cash. At those matrimonial shows such as Esra Erol’da Evlen Benimle (Marry me at Esra Erol Show), Su Gibi (Pure as Water) and Ne Çıkarsa Bahtına (By Chance), candidates give information about themselves, express their criteria about marriage and trying to find their spouses in public, on television. If they get along with each other, their wedding ceremony also holds live on TV screens. -

After months of waiting, anxious fans will finally find out what happens when a prime-time hit returns to the airwaves. Nathan Fillion reprises his role as John Nolan, a cop who sets out to find a col- league after she goes missing in the sea- son premiere of “The Rookie,” airing Sun- day on ABC. The debut marks the fourth season of the hour-long drama centered on Nolan, a 40-something cop — and oldest rookie in the history of the LAPD — who works at the Mid-Wilshire Division of the Los Ange- les Police Department. The police drama is the latest in a string of hits for Canadian-American actor Fillion, who rose to fame as Capt. Mal- colm Reynolds in the cult favorite TV series “Firefly” and its subsequent spinoff film, “Serenity” (2005), and as sleuthing mystery writer Richard Castle in the ABC crime drama “Castle.” Born and raised in Edmonton, Fillion moved south to pursue a career in acting, landing roles in TV shows “One Life to Live” and “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place” and in the movie “Saving Private Ryan” (1998). Now, he’s leading the cast of one of prime time’s highest-rated network series: “The Rookie.” At the end of last season, pregnant Det. -
