CROSSDRESSING CINEMA: AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION IN FILM A Dissertation by JEREMY RUSSELL MILLER Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2012 Major Subject: Communication CROSSDRESSING CINEMA: AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION IN FILM A Dissertation by JEREMY RUSSELL MILLER Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Approved by: Co-Chairs of Committee, Josh Heuman Aisha Durham Committee Members, Kristan Poirot Terence Hoagwood Head of Department, James A. Aune August 2012 Major Subject: Communication iii ABSTRACT Crossdressing Cinema: An Analysis of Transgender Representation in Film. (August 2012) Jeremy Russell Miller, B.A., University of Arkansas; M.A., University of Arkansas Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Joshua Heuman Dr. Aisha Durham Transgender representations generally distance the transgender characters from the audience as objects of ridicule, fear, and sympathy. This distancing is accomplished through the use of specific narrative conventions and visual codes. In this dissertation, I analyze representations of transgender individuals in popular film comedies, thrillers, and independent dramas. Through a textual analysis of 24 films, I argue that the narrative conventions and visual codes of the films work to prevent identification or connection between the transgender characters and the audience. The purpose of this distancing is to privilege the heteronormative identities of the characters over their transgender identities. This dissertation is grounded in a cultural studies approach to representation as constitutive and constraining and a positional approach to gender that views gender identity as a position taken in a specific social context.

Tinder-ing Desire: The Circuit of Culture, Gamified Dating and Creating Desirable Selves Tanya F. Oishi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: LeiLani Nishime, Chair Ralina Joseph Carmen Gonzalez Program Authorized to Offer Degree Communication 2 ©Copyright 2019 Tanya F. Oishi 3 University of Washington Abstract Tinder-ing Desire: Tanya F. Oishi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: LeiLani Nishime Communication This dissertation starts at intersection of race, gender, and technology, all of which will be discussed in depth throughout this project, and the fluid state of being constituted and being undone by one another. It is in this state of vulnerability that relationships are initiated, through technology that these relationships are shaped and facilitated, and within the constraints of social expectations that these interactions are able/allowed to occur (Duck, 2011). As life becomes more mediated and interactions more facilitated through technological means, focusing on relationships facilitated through dating apps is illustrative of the ways in which mobile technologies are changing the way we communicate with one another. The introduction provides the theoretical overview of the literature off of which the rest of the dissertation builds its arguments: the importance of interpersonal connections, the positionality of Asian men in the U.S., and the mutual shaping of society and technology, as well 4 as a justification for a mixed methodological approach to these areas of inquiry. The second chapter looks at the subreddit r/Tinder Profile Review Week thread to see how individuals seek feedback on creating a desirable self and describes how these impression management strategies of Asian men differ from the group which is comprised predominantly by white men.

  • Echo and Pine
Get Your Kicks at the 50th June 2-5, 2016 Echo and Pine 1 Letter from the President Dear Members of the Classes of 1966: On this noteworthy anniversary, it is my great pleasure to welcome you, the trailblazing members of the Classes of 1966, back to campus. From my conversations with many of you and from the memories you share in the following pages, it is apparent that the social and political upheavals of the mid-1960s – and their expressions on campus – substantially shaped your worldviews and your lives. Equally apparent is the collective sense of the Colleges’ impact on the way in which your Classes navigated those turbulent times, from the attentiveness and care of the faculty and administration, to the camaraderie of the student body, to the thought-provoking nature of the coursework. As we join together in celebrating with you this Golden Jubilee, perhaps most apparent is the remarkable success of the Classes of 1966, not only in spite of the changing national landscape 50 years ago, but also because of it. Through the burgeoning Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War, through the Cold War and the advent of the Internet, through the 9/11 attacks and increasing globalization, your classes have thrived in this changing world and helped shape it – as doctors and educators; business and religious leaders; attorneys and musicians; service-members in law enforcement and the military; Fulbright winners and world-travelers; local, national and international volunteers; and parents and grandparents. On behalf of our faculty, staff and students, I thank you for joining us this weekend and for your indelible contributions to your communities, your country and your alma maters.
