CONSOLIDATED TABLE OF CASES ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY VOLUMES 1—125 Notes : This table of cases lists as comprehensively as possible, in alphabetical order, all cases reproduced or reported in the Annual Digest /International Law Reports, entering cases under all common variants of their title. It should be noted that many cases appearing in the AD/ILR do not have a title as such in their original version (e.g. in jurisdictions where the practice is to use case numbers rather than titles). There are other circumstances (e.g. ICJ cases) where to include the full formal title (including the introductory ‘Case concerning’) would be misleading in an alphabetical table. Such cases are listed under the key element[s] (e.g. ‘Aerial Incident of 27 July 1955’ rather than ‘Case concerning ...’). The full formal titles are used, where they exist, in the table of cases by jurisdiction. ILR practice, in the presentation of cases and in the treatment of cases referred to and in the matter of cross-references, has varied considerably over the years. So far as practicable, the current table brings earlier tables into conformity with current practice. Page references in earlier tables have accordingly been deleted where they contained no more than a cross- reference or a direction to another part of the volume where treatment of the case could be found. Where, in the Annual Digest in particular, a long extract from a case has been included, this has been treated as a full report rather than a note – ‘long’, of course, being a variable concept. Current ILR practice is, wherever appropriate, to use English in case titles (e.g. ‘Ad- ministration des Douanes’ is rendered as ‘Customs Administration’, ‘Avocat Gen´ eral’´ as ‘Advocate-General’). But there has been no systematic attempt in this consolidated table to bring earlier practice into line. Ex parte cases are shown both under their full title and under the name of the person concerned (e.g. ‘Ali, ex parte’, ‘Campbell, ex parte’). These latter entries do not show the full formal name (or sub nom)ofthe case unless this seems particularly helpful, for example to distinguish between cases involving persons of the same name (e.g., ‘Smith, ex parte (sub nom Rv.Birkenhead Borough Justices, ex parte Smith)’ and ‘Smith, ex parte (sub nom Rv. West Yorkshire Coroner)’) or where the case might be more familiar under another variant. It is rarely shown where the sub nom title contains little extra information. For example, ‘Bidwell, ex parte (sub nom Rv.Governor of Brixton Prison, ex parte Bidwell’) is rendered simply as Bidwell, ex parte. But ‘Beane, ex parte (sub nom Rv.Bolton and Another, ex parte Beane)’ is shown in full because of the new element ‘R v. Bolton’. All these cases can be found with full details amongst the ‘R v.’ entries. Ex rel cases have been treated in the same way as ex parte cases. A fully detailed list can be found at ‘United States of America, ex rel’. Wherever appropriate in this alphabetical table, case titles have been simplified. For example, phrases such as ‘Government of’, ‘Kingdom of’, ‘Republic of’ have been omitted unless they are necessary to distinguish between countries or between the same country at different periods or where the case[s] themselves make it clear that it is important to retain the phrase. For international tribunals it has usually been sufficient to use, e.g., ‘Liberia’, ‘Iran’. In proceedings in its own courts involving the State, the formula adopted is ‘State (France)’, ‘Public Prosecutor (France)’ etc. so that it is clear in the alphabetical table which jurisdiction is involved. Titles have also been simplified where possible: e.g. the ‘Secretary of State for Home Affairs’ and its variants is ‘Home Secretary’ (without an indication of jurisdiction since this title is used only in the United Kingdom). 1 2 ALPHABETICAL TABLE OF CASES Where included, expressions such as ‘Canton of’, ‘City of’, ‘Commonwealth of’, ‘Com- mune of’, ‘Dominion of’, ‘Government of’, ‘Kingdom of’, ‘Municipality of’, ‘People of’, ‘Principality of’, ‘Republic of’, ‘Town of’, ‘Union of’ are listed alphabetically according to the place concerned (e.g., India (Union of)). 767 Third Avenue Associates and Another v.
