    92 — The Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research in Communications, Vol. 6, No. 1 • Spring 2015 Yesterday’s News: Media Framing of Hitler’s Early Years, 1923-1924 Katherine Blunt Journalism and History Elon University Abstract This research used media framing theory to assess newspaper coverage of Hitler published in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Washington Post between 1923 and 1924. An analysis of about 200 articles revealed “credible” and “non-credible” frames relating to his political influence. Prior to Hitler’s trial for treason in 1924, the credible frame was slightly more prevalent. Following his subsequent conviction, the non-credible frame dominated coverage, with reports often presenting Hitler’s failure to over- throw the Bavarian government as evidence of his lack of political skill. This research provides insight into the way American media cover foreign leaders before and after a tipping point—one or more events that call into question their political efficacy. I. Introduction The resentment, suspicion, and chaos that defined global politics during the Great arW continued into the 1920s. Germany plunged into a state of political and economic turmoil following the ratification of the punitive Treaty of Versailles, and the Allies watched with trepidation as it struggled to make reparations pay- ments. The bill — equivalent to 33 billion dollars then and more than 400 billion dollars today — grew increas- ingly daunting as the value of the mark fell from 400 to the dollar in 1922 to 7,000 to the dollar at the start of 1923, when Bavaria witnessed the improbable rise of an Austrian-born artist-turned-politician who channeled German outrage into a nationalistic, anti-Semitic movement that came to be known as the Nazi Party.1 Ameri- can media outlets, intent on documenting the chaotic state of post-war Europe, took notice of Adolf Hitler as he attracted a following and, through their coverage, essentially introduced him to the American public.

    Consistency of Two Major Data Sources for Exchange Rates in the Interwar Period and Evidence on the Behaviour of Exchange Rates during Hyperinflations: The Case of Germany David A. Peel and Alina M. Spiru Lancaster University Management School Abstract We exploit a rather neglected source of data, The Commercial and Financial Chronicle to shed light on the behaviour of daily and weekly exchange rates throughout several interwar hyperinflation episodes, in particular the German hyperinflation. The purpose of our analysis is three-fold: firstly, we investigate the consistency of exchange rate data by comparing the rates available from this source to those provided by a widely used source, Einzig (1937). Secondly, we scrutinize the commentaries offered by The Chronicle to shed light on the impact of news on the behaviour of the US dollar/German reichsmark exchange rate over the interwar German hyperinflation, and to check whether the narrative analysis provided therein is consistent with formal econometric analyses in dating when the probability of monetary reform became significantly different from zero. Thirdly, we examine the relationship between the US dollar/German reichsmark spot rate and German wholesale prices during the high inflation period of 1923 using data at (nearly) weekly frequency. We find evidence of long- run purchasing power parity, consistent with the findings of several extant studies that employ monthly data. However, we also show that complete adjustment to purchasing power parity did not appear to occur with the nearly weekly sampled data. I.     An All-American Town? Ethnicity and Memory in the Barre Granite Strike of 1922 The strike of 1922 represents not merely a reverberation of national phenomena in seemingly remote Vermont; it says something about labor conflict in small industrial centers across New England. Emphasis on French Canadians’ experience through the clash in Barre highlights the impact of such labor practices on interethnic relations in places all too often overlooked by scholars. Abbott was present at JC’s reading of Victory [10 May 1923, New York], which lasted about an hour. “The complete detachment with which he described his work” (5) was refreshing. JC speaks English with such a European accent that it is sometimes difficult to understand him. Adams, Elbridge L. [All references are to Adams’s article.] Adams2 met JC in early September 1916, at Capel House. He spoke warmly of Walter Hines Page and Stephen Crane, and said of Fenimore Cooper that his artistic instinct was genuine and unerring, although his style had the beauties and defects of its age. He loved Henry James and read him repeatedly, for he was “the historian of fine consciences” (10). The Preface to The Nigger of the “Narcissus” was written to express “his intimate feelings about the aim of the art of fiction” (12). The background information supplied to the political letters, and inclusion in the volume of the letters received by Gramsci, helps to flesh out the general context of what was happening in both the Comintern and in the Italian Communist Party. In the aftermath of the Fourth Congress of the International (November-December 1922) a clarification of positions began in the PCI, with what would become the centre group around Gramsci distancing itself both from Bordiga’s left and from Tasca’s right (later incorporated into the centre).
