Kolyada “The Genre System of Early Russian Hymnography: the Main Stages and Principles of Its Formation”.1 On the one hand the Glossary is an integral part of the article, therefore revealing and corroborating its principal conceptual propositions. However, on the other hand it can be used as an independent reference resource for hymnographical terminology, useful for the majority of Orthodox Churches worldwide that follow the Eastern Rite: Byzantine, Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian et al., as well as those Western Orthodox dioceses and parishes, where worship is conducted in English. The Glossary includes the main corpus of chants that represents the five great branches of the genealogical tree of the genre system of early Christian hymnography, together with their many offshoots. These branches are 1) psalms and derivative genres; 2) sticheron-troparion genres; 3) akathistos; 4) canon; 5) prayer genres (see the relevant tables, p. 298-299).2 Each entry includes information about the etymology of the term, a short definition, typological features and a basic statement about the place of a particular chant in the daily and yearly cycles of services in the Byzantine rite.3 All this may help anyone who is involved in the worship or is simply interested in Orthodox liturgiology to understand more fully specific chanting material, as well as the general hymnographic repertoire of each service.

    Service Instructions for Theophany (Epiphany) 2019 From His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH The Royal Hours & Typika are served on the morning of Friday, January 04, which is the day BEFORE the Paramon (Eve). Therefore, we sing the Apolytikion of the Forefeast: Be thou ready, Zebulon… (HTM Horologion 369, Nassar 433). The Royal Hours may each be offered in either of the following orders: Consecutively, starting at 9:00 AM in the following manner: start the First Royal Hour with “Blessed is our God,” and OMIT the Dismissal at the end of each Hour (except the last), and OMIT the section between “Blessed is our God” to right before “Come let us worship” in the Third, Sixth and Ninth Hours. SIMPLY PUT, OMIT THE BOXED PORTIONS OF THE TEXT. At their usual times (6:00 AM, 9:00 AM, Noon and 3:00 PM), with the Ninth Royal Hour and Typika being served at 3:00 PM, followed immediately by Daily Vespers of Paramon (Eve) of Theophany. Alternatively, Vespers may be celebrated in the early evening hours. The Priest performs the Great Censing of the entire church at the start of the First and Ninth Royal Hours, and the Small Censing from the Beautiful Gate (Holy Doors) – like he would before the Great Entrance in Divine Liturgy – at the start of the Third and Sixth Royal Hours. NOTE: We do NOT celebrate Divine Liturgy on Friday, January 04. Our Patriarchate of Antioch reminds us that we follow this same pattern at Pascha, when Royal Hours are served on Holy Friday, and Divine Liturgies are celebrated only on the weekend.

THE THEOPHANY OF OUR LORD From Scripture we know that whatever God created was good, but with "the Fall", evil entered the world, corrupting the crea- AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST tion. God the Father sent His Son Jesus to save it by effecting a "new creation". This is celebrated at Theophany, specifically Ἀγία Θεοφάνεια τοῦ Κυρίου with the Great Blessing of Water. "The consecration of the waters on this feast places the entire world - through its 'prime element' of water - in the perspective of the cosmic creation, 6 JANUARY (6 Ιανουαρίου) 2013 sanctification, and glorification of the Kingdom of God in Christ and the Spirit." (The Orthodox Faith, Vol. II, Worship, by Fr. Thomas Hopko, p.127.) All the readings, hymns, prayers, and actions of the day speak of God's presence in our entire world and universe, His creation. Through water, all of the creation is once again sanctified by God, becoming good again, the way God had intended. The Feast of Theophany The Feast of Theophany (or Epiphany) commemorates the Baptism of our Lord in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. We know from the troparion of the day that "the Trinity was made manifest" to us. But there's more to it than this. "When Je- sus descends into the depths of the river, there occurs a profound upheaval. It is not the one baptized who is purified, for he is spotless, but it is the water that is trans- figured and illumined. This water, which was believed to be transparent and purify- ing, is in fact polluted, inhabited by evil spirits, servants of the old gods.

All rights reserved. ANTI-JUDAISM IN THE PRESENT-DAY BYZANTINE LITURGY BERT GROEN* 1. INTRODUCTION In a short but significant chapter in a Dutch manual on Eastern Christian- ity, Adelbert Davids describes the rise and expansion of anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism in the Early Church. He outlines the process of alienation between Christianity and Judaism, the self-concept of the Church and the Christian State as the True Israel, the hatred of several ecclesiastical leaders (e.g., John Chrysostom) of Judaism, their promotion of anti-Jewish state leg- islation and forced conversions of Jews to Christianity.1 The phenomena of theological anti-Judaism and profane anti-Semitism have not only been serious historical problems in the relations between Judaism and Christianity, but they are also important issues in present-day contacts and dialogue between the two religions. Furthermore, one might ask the question if these notorious phenomena do not deny the universality of salvation.
